Kindergarten News Kindergartens have begun the term with enthusiasm and giggles. We are excited to learn new blends, continue our amazing writing, discover local significant sites and explore the inquiry question, “how does a submarine sink and float?” We began our Science and Technology unit by predicting which objects would sink and which would float. We tested these predictions using a range of materials from our classroom.

Year One News Year One has had a fabulous first week back at the College. We have been
busy welcoming our new class pet “Sunny” the axolotl, competing and
cheering on our friends in the Athletics Carnival, and exploring the themes
of the ocean and sustainability, which have inspired our classes’ major
artwork this term.
This week, guided by these themes, Year One looked more closely at
stingrays, our class totem. We explored the features, movements, and
habitats of stingrays and used this information to inspire our designs and the
construction of our stingray sculptures. Here is a sneak peak of us
constructing our designs.

Japanese News Last week Year 10 Japanese students joined Mrs Brennan at the annual ANU Asia Pacific Day. This experience was a great opportunity for the students to see firsthand and participate in discussions on issues relevant to Asia and the Pacific in a regional and global context. The day was interesting, informative and enjoyable and our students came away with new perspectives on future study paths and career options.
The ANU Asia Pacific Day in Canberra was an eye opening experience, which was both enjoyable and interesting, giving us opportunities to take part in sessions such as Calligraphy, Global Health and Security and the Kabuki workshop (Japanese theatre). The vast amount of schools that attended allowed us to get to know people and also gave us an insight into how many different languages current senior school students are studying. Some of these included Japanese, Korean and Burmese. The student panel gave an opportunity to talk to current ANU students and discuss what degrees they are studying. This day helped me to realise what possible career options are available and where my interests lie. I am very passionate about
attending the ANU in the near future and possibly studying International Security. Sophie Brown Year 10 The ANU Asia Pacific Day was highly enjoyable and worthwhile. Throughout the event we listened to lectures and participated in workshops that we had previously selected. The last session involved current ANU students sharing their valuable advice and personal experiences where doors had opened for them. As a Japanese student who plans to continue studying the language, the ANU Asia Pacific day opened my eyes to the many possible future paths that I could take. Tara Watts Year 10

English News The following two pieces are examples of work from our current Year 12 Advanced English class. The students undertake an Area of Study in which they must examine and respond to texts through a particular ‘lens’. This year the concept of Discovery is the focus. The Cage, written by one of our Year 12 students, is a creative piece that communicates notions of discovery in a very confronting and challenging way.
The Cages
I saw them. I saw their blood shot eyes, limp bodies, pale faces. The lustrous, polished blade reflected the horror that was on my face as he cut through their bodies. I clenched my eyes shut in an effort to hide the fear that was exploding within my hopeless body. Their screams bellowed inside my skull, the pain and trauma penetrating deep into my chest haunting every facet of vitality and purity I ever possessed. It was too much and my thoughts and feelings turned into a numb blur… It was the year 1939 according to the rusty label that hung on my cage. I was trapped in a rusty, confined cage with four other girls and we were insignificant compared to the imposing scale of the prison we were being held in. All of our feet were broken, battered or enfeeble from the sharp wire of the cage. The food we ate made our minds hazy and empty, but we wouldn't let ourselves starve. One of us would die every week or two which gave us more room for a little while, but the smell was rotten and more often then not we were forced to eat what was left of the body. My friend, 43981, lived in the cage below me. She argued a lot about the lack of food and how sore her feet were, so I nicknamed her princess just to tick her off. We all had labels strapped around our ankles, which identified who we were. I was 33689. I was luckier then most because my cage sat right at the top, which meant I didn't get shat on by everyone else, however it did mean I would see, smell and hear more then the others. Where I lived, there were only girls and we didn't get along much. Even though there were so many of us I still felt lonely and scared, especially when ‘he’ came in. ‘He’ was a huge, grotesque creature and we all called him Alien. The alien being was tall, had four long legs or limbs, a strange face with two eyes on the front, a soft elongated nose, a mouth with worm like things stuck to them and two round things that stuck out either side of his head. His unorthodox appearance suited his vile and immoral actions. He invaded us every few days, taking some of us away to a different place and no one knew where. Except for me. Summer 1938 was the last time I saw my family. We used to see the fresh green grass, the blue sky and at night the stars. I used to eat worms or seeds and I would feel the warmth from the sun on my feathers. We were surrounded by creatures that looked similar to Alien, but they were different, nicer, calmer and never harmed any of us. Mother called them humans. They would feed us a lot and nurture us if we were ill. We would pick at the ground, scourge for

English News some grubs or beetles and we feared nothing. That was until Alien came one night and stole everything from us. That was when my nightmare had begun. The other chickens were lucky, because a lot of them didn't know of the world out there. They could not grieve from memories or experiences that they never had. When they looked up all they saw was black, no blue sky or stars, just black. They did not know what true happiness was, what it was to feel protected, to have a family, friends, to feel peace, to adventure and discover. All they knew was this. Cages upon cages of unfamiliar faces. We were all controlled by fear, the fear that if we didn't lay eggs every single day we would be taken away… Forever. Princess was my friend because she had a similar experience to me. We were both changed completely the day we were taken from our families. We both learnt that evil could be exploited in all forms of life. We saw how the vulnerable could be stripped from their identity, transformed into something or someone that participated in vile and callous acts. We learnt to treasure what we once had and to use it as motivation to keep us alive. And we knew more then everyone else, that life in a cage wasn’t it. We knew there was more, more to uncover about life, but we were haunted by our memories, by what we saw on the day we became caged. Maybe it was the food, the water, the metal wire, the cold, the smell, the Alien, the feeling of imprisonment or a combination of everything that rekindled the evocative memories and thoughts in my mind. I ruffled my feathers in an attempt to alleviate the chill in my bones. I’m sure the others knew what happened to us once we got out of the cage, but only I knew for sure… that death was the only escape in the prison. I saw the blood, the fear in their eyes, the sharp glint of the knife and only I felt their pain in my aching heart. In an instant, a life could divide into before and after, gone forever. Invariably, in this place, something remains as a reminder. The Cages.

St Cecilia Music Scholarships
The 2017 Eurobodalla St Cecilia Youth Music Scholarships are now open to all students. For application information please see Mr Freeman or visit www.stcecilia.org.au. Many St Peter’s past and present students have won major scholarship awards at this event. There are both classical and contemporary music categories and I would encourage serious musicians to take part. Auditions will be held at St Peter’s on the 21st and 22nd October.
About the Scholarships
St Cecilia has long been regarded as the Patron Saint of Music and Musicians. The celebration of her festival day, 22 November, by musical performances has been the practice in Europe for many centuries. Recognising the disadvantages that local music student’s face compared with their metropolitan counterparts the Eurobodalla St Cecilia Music Scholarship association was formed in 1995 to provide assistance to young musicians in the area. Every year in October a set of auditions with independent adjudicators is held for music students from 8 to 18 years of age and ten scholarships are awarded ranging from $100 merit awards to scholarships worth $1,000. One of these scholarships is the Maria de Rocco prize named after the founder of the association. Following the auditions an award winners concert is held in November as close as possible to St Cecilia’s day in which the scholarship holders receive their awards and, together with guest musicians, play in front of a public audience. The scholarships can only be spent on items or services that further the student’s musical education. Mr Freeman
