You have been so quick to include me – playing bridge (poorly), facilitating EfM or Tuesday Morning Bible Study, listening to my sermons (and thanks so much for the constructive comments that have enabled me to be a better preacher!), sharing meals at 55+ or Wednesday evenings, opening your hearts at times of great stress or loss or illness- the list goes on and on. In every way, this parish evidences the love of God and the building up of God’s realm on earth. THE KEYS TO ST. PETER’S St . Peter ’s Episcopal Church

June and July 2011

Parting is such sweet sorrow (“Romeo and Juliet”, Act 2, scene 2. William Shakespeare) How to say goodbye to you who have shaped me into the priest I am – and have given me such good direction and courage to continue to grow into the priest I may become? When I first accepted the call in 2009 to be the Chaplain to Ole Miss and the Assistant Rector to St. Peter’s, a number of people from places outside of Mississippi told me how delighted they were. St. Peter’s is known far and wide in the Episcopal Church for the nurturing love and guidance it has given to so many “baby priests” over the years. This speaks volumes about who you are and your ministry to the wider church. A small town in northern Mississippi is known far and wide for the love of Christ which transforms lives. I am deeply honored and proud to be one of those who was called to Ole Miss and to St. Peter’s. I go into the world knowing that you have enabled me to go on to do God’s work in another place. We never truly leave those we have loved. Part of who I am now is because you have loved and nurtured me. One of the best aspects of my time at St. Peter’s is that when I goofed up, you were willing to step forth in love and let me know that. Through your courage,

and your understanding of the Gospel, we have been able to work through those challenges, and I hope, have repaired any rift. You have been so quick to include me – playing bridge (poorly), facilitating EfM or Tuesday Morning Bible Study, listening to my sermons (and thanks so much for the

constructive comments that have enabled me to be a better preacher!), sharing meals at 55+ or Wednesday evenings, opening your hearts at times of great stress or loss or illness- the list goes on and on. In every way, this parish evidences the love of God and the building up of God’s realm on earth. Should you find yourself in the Indianapolis area, I hope you will send me an email or give me a call ([email protected] 662-715-9085 or 317-885-7343). Scott and I would enjoy visiting with you if your time in the area permits.

Stewardship: Don’t Forget We hope you have a great vacation, but please don’t forget us as you leave town. Pledge payments tend to decline over the summer months, when many parishioners are gone, which can make meeting our expenses a challenge. So as you get ready to leave, please remember St. Peters—we’re happy to accept your post-dated checks!

Thanks much,

Jennifer Southall

On the fourthThursday each month (Sept. thru May) the 55+ group enjoy a great luncheon in the Parish Hall, normally catered by Emileigh's, with good food at a reasonable price. There are very interesting and educational speakers, lined up a year in advance, by Program Chairman, Mary Ann Bowen. If you haven't tried it, think it over. You must be 55 or older but birth certificates are not required. The 55+ at one time was called "Over Duncan". Later, Duncan gave us the "55+ " name.

Each year we exchange with the Presbyterians, and enjoy the same type program at their church. They do the same with us. We also invite our personal guests if there is a special speaker or just a desire to have a guest attend.

Elizabeth Williston is the dedicated and relentless calling chairman who reminds us every month. Spider Webb collects the money and pays the bill. Regina & Joe Symons provide fresh flowers on the tables, Betty and Doug Brandon set up the tables with the help of Elizabeth King. Clara & Burl Hunt wash the dishes after each luncheon. Kay Paris and Jan Thrift wash the tablecloths.

We are all grateful to Mary Ann as well as those mentioned above who made this program work so well over the past few years. Your service will be missed but your presence will still be enjoyed. There are others who contribute and make this 4th Thursday of the month so special. This is one of the good things about getting to be over 55.

Senior Warden Report:

Michael Worthy

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church—Operating Statement April 2011

Please make plans to attend a reception in honor of the Rev. Jan Oller in the parish hall following the 10:30a.m. service on Sunday, June 26. Jan came to Oxford in 2009 as the newly appointed ECOM chaplain and assistant rector, after completing her seminary studies at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, IL and being ordained to the transitional diaconate. She was ordained to the priesthood in January of 2010 and has served St. Peter’s, the University and the community in many ways. Her personal interaction with ECOM students will have lifelong

effects for many. Her sermons and pastoral care will likewise pay dividends for parishioners for years to come.

To give her a good sendoff, we are planning to present Jan with a scrapbook of personal notes from parishioners and a financial gift to help her with her future ministries. I invite you to write a note to Jan to be included in a scrapbook to commemorate her time with us and also to make a monetary contribution to the “purse.” Handwritten notes expressing sentiments or

recalling special moments will help Jan recall her years in Oxford. Please bring your note and/or monetary gift to the church office by Wed, June 22, so that there will be time to organize our gift to her.

On another note, the organizers of Fun In The Country have decided to forego hosting the event this year and will begin organizing this Fall to make the event a success in 2012. Pati Herndon, our new volunteer coordinator, and other organizers will be in contact with volunteers with information about Fun In The Country 2012.

St. Peter’s will be offering a confirmation class beginning mid-August in preparation for Bishop Gray’s visit on October 30. Anyone interested in attending the confirmation class, please contact the church office at 234-1269, or email [email protected] to register for the class.

Introducing Patricia (Pati) Herndon, St. Peter’s New Volunteer Coordinator

St. Peter’s would like to welcome Pati Herndon as our new Volunteer Coordinator. She will help "plug in" newcomers to small groups and ministries within the church. In addition, the lay leaders of many inreach and outreach ministries will now be able to turn to a single support person for help planning events, organizing volunteers, and burgeoning new interest in their ministry! We hope that you all plan to meet Pati in person throughout the next few weeks!

Pati has been a resident of Oxford and member of St. Peters for over seven years, having moved to Oxford from Ridgeland, MS in 2003. Until her retirement in 2010, Pati was a technical sales representative in the scientific instrumentation industry for more than 25 years. After moving to Oxford, she started her own business, fixology, which provides professional and residential organizational services to its clients. Pati is married to James Herndon and they have two wonder-ful “fuzzy children” Obie and Tali, both West Highland Terriers.

If you have any interest in a new ministry or would like to know more about the Volunteer Coordinator's position, please contact Pati at [email protected].

VACATION BULLETINS

Summer is a time to travel and see new places. I hope that when you are in town, however, that you do not take a vacation from church. Yes, we do have less going on in the way of Sunday Christian formation classes and other meetings, but the quintessence of being an Episcopalian is our worship, our common prayer. And we still have five Eucharists a week during the summer.

When parishioners travel, I know that you often attend churches in other parts of the country. Just this morning someone told me that he had attended services at Westminster Cathedral in London just the previous week.

Likely as not, the place where you might be traveling or spending vacation time has an Episcopal Church close by. Here’s an idea to share our summer travels: Share a worship bulletin from the church you visited with others by bringing it by the office, and we will post it on one of our bulletin boards and add to the board different bulletins during the summer months.

It will be interesting to see where fellow parishioners travel and also where they have worshiped. Have a great summer. School will start again before we realize it’s here!

The Rev. Taylor Moore

FIRST FRIDAY

Since the first Friday of July falls on Independence Day weekend, the organizers have decided to take a break for the month. But there are hosts and hostesses already lined up for August and September. There have been a great variety of folks who attend this casual social time on a given Friday, but all report that it was very enjoyable and they appreciated the opportunity to meet folks they did not know or to get to know each other better. See you in August.

PARISH PICNIC: AUGUST 14TH

Mark your calendars for the parish picnic scheduled for Sunday, at noon, on August 14th at Oak Hill Stables. Yes, it will be hot, but there is a swimming pool and lots of shade. This will be a great way to end our summer schedule and begin the school year again.

The Reverend Seth M. Walley is a native son of Moss Point, MS on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After graduating from Moss Point High School, Seth attended the University of

Parish Potluck

Sunday,

June 12th 11:45 a.m.

All parishioners are invited and

encouraged to attend, meet, and greet each other.

Please bring a dish to share.

Mississippi. Seth graduated from Ole Miss with a Bachelor of Business Administration with emphasis in Management and Economics. During his time at Ole Miss, Seth was active in campus ministry, specifically the Episcopal Church at Ole Miss, serving under then chaplain the Reverend Father Ollie Rencher. Seth served as Intern to the Chaplain, MANNA Food Ministry coordinator, and Worship Leader during his time at ECOM. In 2004, Seth was admitted as a Postulant for Holy Orders by His Grace, the Rt. Rev. Duncan M. Gray, III. Seth then attended the Virginia Theological Seminary and the Catholic University of America’s

School of Theology and Religious Studies in the Washington, D.C. metro area. During his time at VTS, Seth served as a CPE Chaplain to Goodwin House, a continuing care community. He also served as a seminarian assistant at All Souls Memorial Episcopal Church in Washington, D.C. under the Reverend Father John Beddingfield. At Virginia Seminary, Seth focused on New Testament Studies, with work in biblical Greek and the authentic letters of St. Paul. He also focused on sacramental/liturgical theology, with an emphasis on eucharistic theology. Seth was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons on June 4th by the Rt. Rev. Duncan M. Gray, III. He is looking forward to his priesting sometime in 2012. During his spare time, Seth enjoys reading (especially Walker Percy), cooking, and watching the Philadelphia Phillies play baseball.
