In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us

that if we put his teachings into

action, we will enter the kingdom

of God. Francis de Sales notes:

Jesus comes to teach us what we

ought to do to love divinely. He

confounds a culture that leads us

to pursue false goals, a culture

that never ceases to say, “How

happy are the wealthy!” For

Jesus, the blessed are they who

conduct themselves in this life

with trust in God. They will win

perpetual peace and tranquility.

They hear the word of God, keep

it and profit by it.

There are two reasons why people do not profit from the word of God.

First, they may indeed hear it and be interiorly moved by it. Yet, they

postpone acting on it until tomorrow. Our life is the today in which we

are living. Who can promise themselves a tomorrow? Our life consists

in this present moment in which we are living. We can only assure

ourselves of this moment that we now enjoy however brief it may be.

Second, some people have a great deal of knowledge. They amass all

sorts of spiritual advice and information, but never put it into practice.

We only learn well the teachings of Jesus when they become a part of

our daily living. To live Jesus, we must allow ourselves to let go of our

disordered emotions, habits, and affections.

We need to transform our emotions and affections so that they help us

to become a divinely loving person. We do this by letting go of all that

is not of God in us. To let go of our vices, we must practice the virtues

opposed to the vice that we desire to abandon. For instance, if our

anger is disordered, then we must practice gentleness and patience. Do

not trouble yourself with anything else, except to follow Jesus’

teachings. Trust in the goodness of God, who will surely provide all that

you need to enter the kingdom of God.

40 Days for Life:

RE: COVD-19: We are

concerned about you, your

families, and the community.

We, along with our Day

Captains, have decided to alter our 40 Days presence

outside Planned Parenthood to reduce the risk of

exposure for all. Everyone is at risk and has the potential

to contract or pass it onto someone else.

1. We will continue to park the truck with a new

banner each day outside Planned Parenthood. This,

alone, will maintain our 40 Days presence on Pismo

Street.

2. Prayer can be done from home, or if you wish, you

may come to PP and pray from within your cars. We do

not encourage you to stand outside on the sidewalk and

pray. You may collect a 40 Days for Life yard sign from

the truck bed to place in your car window or trunk if

you'd like.

The Diocese of Monterey in collaboration with Santa Clara University’s Pastoral Ministries MA program seeks to empower a community of pastoral ministers of competence, conscience, compassion and creativity to accompany others in intercultural contexts. Pope Francis emphasizes the importance of a church that sees itself as “missionary,” that is, going out to

those on the margins. A missionary church is a place of encounter between many cultures and peoples that does not sit back and wait for others to come in. It seeks out the lost, the forgotten, the disenfranchised and welcomes them.

The program from Santa Clara University, delivered right to the Diocese of Monterey at the offices on Church Street, establishes a firm foundation of theology and ministry for all who seek academic, theological and spiritual formation for service in the parishes in youth and young adult ministries and social justice ministries, among others. The Diocese uses this program as well for theological formation for our Deacon candidates. Our Director of the Diaconate and Ministry Formation highly recommends this program for all wo are interested in ministry of any kind in the diocese. What gifts and talents do you bring to the table?

Would you like to learn more about how you can enhance your ministerial skills and deepen your faith commitment to accompaniment in a community of believers? There will be a Virtual Info Session where you can learn more about this program on Thursday, October 8, 2020 at 6:00 PM. Please contact either Deacon Dave Ford or Ann Ventura for details on how to join in!

FAMILIAR INSIGHTS Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren’t that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings—like us—who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today’s readings. People complain God isn’t “fair,” and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. “Actions speak louder than words.” A fresh new insight? Hardly. Paul tells the Philippians that he would truly be encouraged if those who claimed to be believers would, in fact, look to others’ interests and not their own. “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” A novel idea? I don’t think so. In Jesus’ story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows that the one who said he wouldn’t work—but did—is way ahead of the one who said he would work—but didn’t. “Talk is cheap.” Heard that before? GUARDIANS FOR VALUABLE SOULS So valuable to heaven is the dignity of the human soul that every member of the human race has a guardian angel from the moment the person begins to be. —St. Jerome

IMPOSSIBLE Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible; suddenly you are doing the impossible. —St. Francis of Assisi

SAINT THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS (1873-1897) October 1 “The cornerstone’s dated 1872, but the stained glass is much later,” explained the pastor, astonished when his visitor accurately dated it to just before the Great Depression, explaining, “The window for the Little Flower”—Thérèse’s nickname—“gives it away.” From her canonization in 1925, her statues and windows adorn most churches where European immigrants worshiped. Entering Carmel at fifteen, victim of tuberculosis at twenty-four, Thérèse proposed her “Little Way” to sanctity: doing ordinary tasks with extraordinary love. Thus ordinary Catholics, many of whom had lost loved ones to tuberculosis, embraced her. Though she never left her cloister, this Carmelite’s spiritual communion and devoted correspondence with missionaries earned her the title Patroness of Missions. Her autobiography, Story of a Soul, continuously in print since her death, chronicles her prayerful perseverance through doubt and caused her to be the youngest person ever named a Doctor of the Church. Countless physical healings and spiritual conversions testify to her fulfillment of her deathbed promise: “After my death, I will let fall a shower of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good upon earth!” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
