Message from our Pastor:

In 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed to Congress: “We look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is Freedom of Speech and Expression, everywhere in the world. The second is Freedom of every person to Worship God in his own way, everywhere in the world. The third is Freedom from Want, everywhere in the world. The fourth is Freedom from Fear, anywhere in the world.”

I hope that this coming Thursday when we share our Thanksgiving meal with loved ones, that we can take a few minutes to think about the Freedoms that we take for granted and thank God that we are fortunate to be able to enjoy them.

I am Thankful… I can walk. There are those who have never taken their first step. I am Thankful… I can see the beauty all around me. There are those whose world is always dark. I am Thankful… I can hear music playing. There are those who entire life has been spent in silence. I am Thankful… My heart can be broken. There are those who are so hardened they cannot be touched. I am Thankful… I can move about freely and express my beliefs. There are those who live in constant fear. I am Thankful… I have been loved. There are those for whom no one has ever cared. I am Thankful… I can work. There are those who have to depend on others for their most basic needs. I am Thankful… For the opportunity to help others. There are those who have not been so abundantly blessed as I. I am Thankful… For being part of the loving community of Saint Paul Church. There are those who are outcasts and are left without the gift of community. May God Bless you.

Fr. Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D

Padre Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D.

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although

Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

LIFE’S

LITTLE

INSTRUCTI

ON BOOK

After the death of Saul, Israel’s first king, the southern tribes accepted David as king while the northern tribes, known as Israel, refused to accept him for more than seven years. Today’s first reading narrates their ultimate acceptance of David when the “elders of Israel” and David “made a covenant” (5:3). David’s reign is the beginning of a dynasty that will rule in Jerusalem for over four centuries. After the monarchy ceased, biblical Israel looked to the future with the expectation that God would reestablish his rule with a descendant of David.

the future with the expectation that God would reestablish his rule with a descendant of David. For us as Christians, this hope is fulfilled in Jesus.

The letter to the Colossians, thought to have been written by Paul while he was in prison, presents us with an early hymn concerned with Jesus’ identity. As “the image of the invisible God” (1:15), we are told, “all things were created through him and for him” (v.16). As “head of the body, the church” (v.18) Christ has “made peace by the blood of his cross” (v.18), reconciling us to God.

A king dying on the cross is not what the world would expect but that is how our king saved us. Though the inscription announced Jesus as “the king of the Jews” (23:38), the witnesses to his execution mocked him as a false king. Only one person is presented as recognizing Jesus’ true identity, the “good thief” who pleads with Jesus, “Remember me when you come into your kingdom” (v.42). And Jesus, whose death means life, promises him a place “in Paradise” (v.43). For Reflection: Do you recognize Jesus Christ as your King and Lord? How can I better serve my king with my life?

The Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbor in their spiritual and bodily necessities. It seeks to help alleviate human misery—material deprivation, unjust oppression, physical and psychological illness and death. Such misery is an obvious sign of our inherited human frailty and need for salvation as a consequence of original sin. Everyone is obliged to perform the works of mercy, according to their own ability and the need of their neighbor. It is important to remember that ordinary deeds done every day to relieve the corporal and spiritual needs of others are true works of mercy, if done in the name of Christ.

As this Holy Year of Mercy, declared by Pope Francis, has come to an end, let us remember how the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy should be incorporated as a daily way of living as Disciples of Christ. Mother Teresa once said, “I see Jesus in every human being. Each one of them is Jesus in disguise. I say to myself, this is hungry Jesus; I must feed him. This is sick Jesus. This one has leprosy and gangrene; I must wash him and tend to him. I serve because I love Jesus.”

As members of this beautiful faith community of St Paul’s, let us continue to do “Good Works” throughout our lives. May God bless you. Fr. Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D.

Padre Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D.
