Greetings to God’s

Minions at St. Paul.

Maybe it’s because of

our Thursday Bible

Study classes as of late

that are focused on the

Augsburg Confession

that got me thinking. It

could be all the mailings with advertising stuff for the coming

500th year celebration of the Reformation. After all, it is

October. It might be an article I received about liberal

Protestantism this week as I prepare my articles for the

newsletter. Whatever the case, I again take to my soapbox

declaring “Here I stand!” as I fear for the direction of the

Church as we continue to put ourselves in His way.

Recently, at the national gathering of the ELCA, there was

a vote of historic implication on a document entitled

“Declaration on the Way.” It was a result of 50 years of

dialogue between Roman Catholics and Lutherans on the

national and international level. It contains 32 statements on

the Church, Ministry and Holy Communion that declares

Roman Catholics and Lutherans (well, ELCA Lutherans) are

no longer divided in their understanding of these doctrines.

We are the same and united. What is more than a little

overwhelming is the fact we are beginning the 500th year

celebration of the Reformation.

This acceptance of the “Declaration” celebrates the

re-unification of the Church. I should add that on a national

level there are other Christian bodies plugging into the drive to

unite the Christian Church into one body which includes

Episcopalians, Presbyterians and Mennonites, in addition to

the Lutherans (ELCA) and Roman Catholics. The excitement

over this unification is the dream of what might be

accomplished by such a powerful, unified Christian body. I

see it’s potential, but I fear the price that is to be paid by such

unity.

Am I against a united Christian Church? To this I answer

YES! Why? Because it is constructed on a human premise,

by human design, with human goals. The “Declaration” and

all similar documents of this kind creating a form of human

unity based on ecumenical dialogue pursue unity as an end

unto itself. It’s as if nothing else matters, including truth. I

thought the goal of all Christians was to humble ourselves to

God’s will and submit to His plan for unity in Christ Jesus.

Page 2: St. Paul Lutheran Church of Bulverde The EpistleOct 09, 2016  · October 2016 Greetings to God’s Minions at St. Paul. Maybe it’s because of our Thursday Bible Study classes as

I cannot speak for other Christian denominations because I am not ground in their theological or doctrinal interpretations. However, I can

voice my opinion and will based on Scripture as to our Lutheran position, at least what it should — no must be. Our liberal Lutheranism, as

connected to liberal Protestantism in general, has abandoned the foundation of our faith — Sola Scriptura — Word Alone.

As Lutherans, we are not able to pick and choose what we will and what we will not accept and believe of God’s Word. Yet, this is precisely

what is happening in the Church and, specifically, the Lutheran Church today. The “Declaration” is a denial of God’s Word and the

absolute truth it proclaims. Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth

will set you free.” (John 8:31b-32).

Pastor David Thompson of Faith Lutheran Church in San Antonio, Texas wrote, “Liberal Protestantism has lost its anchor. It has a tendency

to drift whichever way the cultural winds are blowing. Truth, in the biblical sense, is no longer an essential ingredient for unity.” I would

kick that up a notch or two by saying that any Christian denomination that discards its understanding of Scripture so easily to lust after an

artificial unity is in apostasy. It says that they only believe in the Word when it is convenient.

I understand and appreciate that there are differences in our interpretation of Scripture between church bodies. It is to be expected since God

did not make us all the same. However, as followers of Jesus Christ, it cannot be any man-made design of unity that sways us from the Word

of God and the unity He makes a reality in Christ. Pursuing such a unity is to embrace a false unity. It is Christ that unites us. That alone

should be enough to bring us together in God’s service as one.

It is time we stop trying to be God or speak for Him and start listening to Him by studying His Word in Scripture and praying on it, so we are

open to do His will. We are to be servants of God and let God be God.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Lee

LCMC holds their annual

gathering in Denver this year

at the beginning of October.

Naturally, Karen and I will be

attending along with Andy

and his wife Kelli representing

St. Paul. I want to express my

thanks to Pastor Don for taking over the duties of preaching

and leading worship on Sunday, October 2. He is a

brother in Christ and a special friend that I am grateful to

have sharing the work of our Lord in the St. Paul family.

Blessings~Pastor Lee

Our first Servant-Leadership series

continues in the month of October.

The first group of St. Paul servant

leaders meets at 12:00 noon in the

Fellowship Hall for one hour. We

share in a light lunch and explore

our Lord’s call to be servant

leaders in His church.

It’s wonderful to hear others asking

about the classes. Rest assured we

will be forming another class when

this one completes its formal phase. On Reformation Sunday,

October 30, we will recognize our first servant-leadership

participants.

On Sunday, October 9 at 12:00 noon,

we offer our next New Disciple Class.

We’ve had many visitors over the

past few months and many have

shown a real interest in joining our St.

Paul family. If you wish to join St.

Paul as a disciple of Christ or just

want to find out more about this

congregation and our Lutheran

Congregations in Mission for Christ

(LCMC) connection, please contact

the church office by email

[email protected] or call 830-980-2813. We provide a lunch and

need to know how many are attending.

We start at 12:00 noon and will be done by 3:00 PM in Fellowship

Hall, just off the main sanctuary. If you’ve been thinking about

joining our fellowship or believe St. Paul to be the spiritual home

you have been looking for, now is a great time. Exciting things are

happening and we would like you to be a part of them.

We’ll be looking for you!

Our Thursday Bible Study classes

will continue to meet at their

regular times of 8:00 AM, 10:00

AM and 6:30 PM in Fellowship

Hall.

The month of October will see us

continue exploring the Augsburg

Confession as we get ourselves

ready for a thorough examination

of Paul’s letter to the Romans. The Book of Romans contains many

of the key doctrinal understandings that define us as both Christians

and as Lutherans. We’re looking at specific Article in the Augsburg

Confession that will have their origin in Romans.

So, join us for some enjoyable exchanges and good fellowship as we

study the Augsburg Confession each Thursday in October. If you

haven’t tried out a Bible study for a while, this might be the one for

you. We’ve got plenty of room for one more like you. Can’t wait to

see you be a part of our fellowship.

Hand Grenades and Good Intentions

This past April, I had the opportunity to spend some time discussing church leadership issues at a round table of LCMC leaders. The group consisted of clergy and other church leaders who all love the Lord and His Church. There is no doubt in my mind that everyone around that table had the best of intentions.

The topic for our discussion was discipleship. One of the pastors shared his thoughts on how hard discipleship is and how few Lutheran pastors and congregations actually have any idea how to make disciples. I whole-heartedly agreed with this pastor's observation. And amidst my own good intentions, I pulled the pin and tossed a hand grenade into the middle of the table. Now it wasn't a physical hand grenade, but an explosive literary device it certainly was: I added, "And so while we neglect our main mission and objective to make disciples because it is hard and we don't know how to do it, we busy ourselves instead with all sorts of other good things to do ... like making quilts for Lutheran World Relief."

The bomb went off! Half intended, half not. Sweet, little-old ladies gave me stares and glares. Mouths hung agape in the shock and horror of what I had just said!

I did my best to recover my intended point: the church has a primary mission and that is to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching. And no matter how difficult it is to do, we cannot neglect the main thing and replace it with anything else, not even other good things to do.

Now I trust that you who are reading this also have the best of intentions. Chances are you also love the Lord and His Church. But I think it is time we all reflect on our good intentions and double-check their alignment with Jesus' intentions for the congregations that we minister among. How are we doing at the main thing Jesus called us to? Are going? Are we making disciples? With those new disciples we are making, are we baptizing and guiding them to spiritual maturity so that they can be sent out and make more new disciples, too? Do we have an intentional plan in place for the ways that we do this together so that it can be reproduced and multiplied?

Or have we been neglectful of this primary calling, and substituted well-intended secondary ministries in place of discipleship? To learn more about how your congregation can develop your own intentional, disciple-making, multiplying ministry plan, please contact me. I'd love to work with you and your congregation and to see your ministry blow-up (in a good way!) to the glory of God!

Threads of Love Announces Journal and Memory Boxes

We are pleased to announce the inclusion of Journals and Memory Boxes as part of our ministry, the Red Roof Satellite of Threads of Love. Susan McConnell will be leading and training new members on how to create these meaningful and beautiful items. Please consider joining us; we have all the materials you will need. Our doors are open every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. and we truly serve the Lord with gladness! Journals are small journal books with blank pages and the cover is decorated similar to scrapbook pages with stickers or die-cut pictures of baby items, baby animals, etc. Journals are given to the parents of newborn premature babies and the parents fill the pages with their prayers, hopes, and dreams for their newborn baby. This is an important therapeutic step of our ministry. Memory boxes are given to the parents of a premature baby that has died. The boxes are decorated with reverence using items such as angels, lambs, flowers, crosses, Bibles, etc. Inside are put embroidered crosses, miniature blankets, hats, and booties, wallet-sized paintings of Jesus and scriptures and leaves room for what the parents want to put in as a remembrance. Threads of Love receives many letters on how these bxes have helped a family to grieve. Would you like to be a part of this ministry? WOW is assisting our kick-off of this ministry on Monday evening, October 17th, at 6:30 p.m. We will be making journals and need your help. Please bring scrapbooking items that pertain to babies such as stickers and die-cut items. If you have a hot glue gun, please bring that as well. You can find these items at hobby stores and Walmart. We will be furnishing stamps and coloring pens. Come join in the fun and hope to see you there!

Advent By Candlelight—Nov. 27, 2016 Advent by Candlelight is an opportunity for women to set aside the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations and focus their minds and hearts on the Second Coming of Christ, the theme of Advent, and the true meaning of Christmas. This event will help us as women of faith to be more centered in Christ spiritually and maybe a little less stressed as we approach the seasons of Advent and Christmas. You may get overwhelmed as you think about parties, cookies, family, and presents or look at the season as a time of loneliness or dwell on happier memories of the past. Let us relax, sing songs of the season, and hear a beautiful message. Advent by Candlelight will be held on November 27th in the CFC here at St Paul from 6pm-8pm. It is considered an outreach effort; thus hostesses and other disciples of St. Paul are encouraged to invite family, friends and neighbors, regardless of church affiliation. Guests are greeted with the ambiance of soft Christmas music and the glow of candlelight. Social time is an important aspect of the evening, please visit with others, admire the decorated tables, enjoy dessert and coffee and relax. This year’s program is centered on the Magi and will incorporate music, prayer, and the singing of familiar Advent and Christmas carols to create a memorable, spiritual message for the women to take with them into the busy Advent season. While the event is free, please reserve your seat, become a hostess or volunteer behind the scenes. Sign up online at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/409054DA9AA2DAB9-2016 or contact the WOW Event Coordinator, Michelle Smith at 210.213.7561 or [email protected].

Children and Prayer

Do we not often ask ourselves, how do I pray? Should I get on my knees every day or have a certain time to pray, a quiet place, a noisy place, alone, with others???? However, it seems the best model is to listen to children pray. It is always simple but yet to the point! Jesus states very clearly how He feels about children, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. “ Luke 18:16

And while children can be amazingly naïve, maybe naiveté is the thing we as adults could use a little more of. What risks would you take today if you were unaware of the potential consequences? Consider the prayers of children.

Children ask and say anything without fear. For most of us adults, fear holds us back from even beginning the conversation. The following words came from an eight-year-old who said, “If you don’t know what to say, just hold your hands together, close your eyes, and start talking.”

In the mind of a child, there is nothing too big or too small to ask God for. Children believe that God is all powerful and can do absolutely anything. And it’s that confidence in the power of God that gives children the ability to trust in the goodness of God.

But most of all, children keep prayer simple while adults often struggle for words, unsure of what they should be saying. Children are honest, simple, and hold nothing back. Ask an adult why we should pray and they will likely give a long explanation, probably something learned in confirmation! A four year old summed it up beautifully, “I pray to Jesus because I love him.”

How much simpler our prayer life could be if we took lessons from children! How much richer our prayers would be if we closed our eyes, thanked Jesus for all our blessings, talked to Jesus about others first and simply say I love You!!

St. Paul Children’s Ministry cont.

This week in Camille’s class at Day School, the theme song for her

curriculum was ‘O Be Careful’. It is a popular Christian children’s song

that goes: Oh be careful little eyes (ear, mouth) what you see (hear,

say), for the Father up above is looking down in love. The song

teaches children the importance of thinking twice about what they

see, hear and say because God knows everything. As I dwelled on

that song, I was reminded that it is just as, if not more important, for us

as adults (parents, grandparents, teacher, friends, etc.) to live by

those words, because not only does God know everything about us, but we also have little ears, eyes and

mouths that mirror us. We are the faith examples for the children in our lives.

As Camille grows up, I want her to see, hear and speak, the love of Christ, because I have been a model of

God’s love in her life. I know that will not happen just by bringing her to church and Sunday School once a week

as she grows up, and hoping that’s enough to impact her life. Instead, each and every day she will be watching,

listening and hearing what I do and who I am. I continuously need to outwardly live out my relationship with God,

through prayer, reading & studying God’s Word, and exemplifying love and kindness to others. This is a huge

responsibility, that I have the blessing and challenge to live out.

Do you have a child in your life that you are a faith example for? What are you doing to exemplify God’s love for

them and the importance of being in relationship with Jesus? Maybe you have some faith practices in place that

work great for you and your family, that showcase your love of God and others. If you do, I would love to hear

about them! Any guidance I can get on this journey, I would love to take. But, maybe you feel like you are

struggling with this huge responsibility. Don’t be discouraged. God is with you and He wants to help you be the

faith leader for your family that you are called to be. Turn to Him in prayer, join a Bible study, talk with a faith

leader, and take the leap of faith to make becoming a faith example a priority. It’s not too late! We have many

great ways to plug-in and recharge at St. Paul, so that you can fully embrace the awesome responsibility you

have been given to be a faith leader for the children in your life and help to raise the next faith-filled generation.

You can contact Sandy Kantorak, the director, at

and you can also find more information about the

Day School at www.redroofschool.com.

St. Paul Lutheran Christian Day School is underway. We have had a wonderful kickoff to our school year with amazing kiddos and supportive families. Our teachers are doing a fabulous job as always. Thank you to Meredith as well as the St. Paul Prayer Warriors for leading us in prayer the first two days of school and on Grandparents Day. It is wonderful that we continue to bring the church and school together in so many ways.

October brings a few special events to CDS. We will be studying fire prevention with a visit from our local fire department toward the beginning of the month. We will also have our fall pictures and wrap the month up with Trick or Trunking. The kids dress up and go car to car in the parking lot in front of CDS collecting candy and showing off their cute and creative costumes.

We still have space available in a couple of our classes. Both 2 day and 4 day slots are available so be sure to spread the word. Our hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 9:00am to 2:00pm. We have a wonderful team and they are dedicating to helping the kiddos grow and develop a love for learning.

Parents wishing to enroll their child(ren) are encouraged to call 830-980-6771 to set up a tour of the facility or to register your child. Thank you for considering St. Paul Lutheran Christian Day School for your child’s early childhood education!

Blessings,

Ms. Sandy

Thanksgiving Baskets 2016

This will be the 14th year that our SPLC disciples have an opportunity to demonstrate Christian love with the Thanksgiving

Basket outreach. Thanksgiving Baskets are a wonderful ministry in which we share our blessings with families in the Bulverde-Spring Branch area. We ask that you donate food and money for local families who need a little extra help putting food on the table this year. In addition, we will again honor several of our “Senior” members with gifts of a turkey or ham and a basket of goodies to celebrate Thanksgiving and to show them our love and appreciation. This ministry warms the hearts of all who participate, and reminds us of the “Reason for the Season”. Please bring your nonperishable food items and place them in the marked collection bins in the Narthex and the CFC (suggestions are listed below). We need money to purchase the perishable food items like turkey, ham, bread, butter, fruits and vegetables. If you would like to contribute financially to this ministry, please indicate on your check that it is for “Thanksgiving Baskets” and place it in the Sunday offering or drop off at the office. You can also put cash/checks in an orange bordered pew envelope and mark it “for Thanksgiving Baskets”. Canned goods and money will be collected from October 2 - November 13, 2016. The week before Thanksgiving will be Basket Action Week and we’ll need volunteers to help divide up the canned goods, shop for the perishables, and pack/deliver food to the families. Any excess canned goods will be given to Provisions food pantry in Bulverde. We need lots of helping hands to make this ministry a success. More details on dates and times will be forthcoming. If you have a few hours to help, please contact:

Hello to everyone,

Many prayers are needed for

the continuation of the

adoption of Ian Sutton. Julie

and David have run into a

wall with the process and

need our immediate prayers.

Pray specifically for Julie’s Visa to be accepted and

processed correctly in order for the adoption to be

fulfilled. Thank you!

The Red Roof Readers are reading Eve by Wm. Paul Young for the month of October. The author of this book is the author of The Shack which shattered our limited perceptions of God. Eve opens a refreshing conversation about the equality of man and women within the context of our beginnings, helping us see each other as our Creator does.

Come and join this lively group of readers on Monday, October 10th in the Fellowship Hall at 6pm. It is always fun to hear perspectives and opinions about the books we read. For more information you may contact Lucy Walker at 830-885-3939.

Mark your calendars...Bible

Breakfast Bunch will return November

19th.
