General Description: The Director of Music serves the church by leadingthe adult vocal choirs, by developing, coordinating, and administering aneffective and well-rounded music program, by providing leadership to staffmembers and volunteers involved in the music ministry, by assuring thatmusic is provided at all worship services, and by coordinating the periodicpresentation of special music events.
Qualifications and Skills:
The Director of Music shall: Be a Christian, saved by grace through faith, who is willing to
proclaim the good news of God’s love, grace, and forgiveness in wordand deed
Ideally have a working knowledge of the Lutheran liturgies and theLutheran faith to facilitate the selection of music appropriate to theliturgical season
Possess, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree in music and experienceperforming in and conducting vocal ensembles (the degreerequirement may be waived, under certain circumstances, withsufficient additional experience)
Demonstrate the ability to effectively sight-read music Demonstrate keyboard proficiency Possess an appreciation for and experience with traditional and
contemporary music styles Possess strong communication skills and be able to effectively teach
musical concepts and vocal techniques Possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail Possess excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate the ability to
work as part of a team Pass the requisite background check

Specific Responsibilities:
As the Adult Choir Director, the Director of Music shall: Provide leadership in the choirs’ role of assisting in worship under the
direction of the pastors and the Worship and Music Committee Train the choirs in choral techniques and foster an appreciation of
sacred music Select appropriate anthems to be performed at the traditional worship
services 2-3 Sundays per month from early September through earlyJune
Conduct weekly choir rehearsals, typically Wednesday evenings, fromearly September through early June lasting no more than 2 hours
Arrange for a substitute when unable to lead a scheduled rehearsal orworship service. If a rehearsal is to be canceled, the Director ofMusic shall notify choir members at least 24 hours in advancewhenever possible.
The Director of Music shall also: Establish departmental goals and objectives and plan an appropriate
budget Coordinate the preparation and presentation of all music at all worship
services, traditional and contemporary, in cooperation with the pastorsand the Worship and Music Committee
Provide titles and composers of anthems to the church office in atimely manner for inclusion in the bulletins
Supervise the Organist/Pianist Be available as a resource and provide support to all musical groups
including, but not limited to, Praise Band, Handbell Choir, andChildren’s Choir (including Christmas program)
Nurture the musical talents of all members of the congregation, recruitnew members into the music program, and expand the opportunitiesavailable for participation in the music program
Integrate the various musical groups as appropriate Plan and organize special musical presentations such as solos, small
ensembles, cantatas, concerts, festivals, musicals Coordinate the presentation of musical offerings for the traditional
worship services during the summer months Consult with the pastors regarding the theme of each worship service,
special programs, and the selection of hymns and choral music

Coordinate the purchase of music, worship and music resources,services of outside instrumentalists, musical instruments andequipment
Supervise filing and cataloging of music Fill in, as requested, for the Organist/ Pianist, accompanist for Praise
Band, Director of Children’s Choir and Director of Handbell Choirwhen those individuals are not available to attend rehearsals orservices
Play piano or organ at weddings and funerals if the Organist/Pianist isnot available
Supervise and schedule the maintenance and tuning of musicalinstruments in collaboration with the Organist/Pianist
Notify the Worship and Music Committee at least 30 days prior tohis/her resignation
Immediate Supervisor: The presiding Senior Pastor is the AdministrativeStaff Supervisor. The Senior Pastor will meet, aside from staff meetings,with the Director of Music for the purpose of setting goals and forevaluation.
Time Requirements: This is a part-time, year-round, salaried position. The Director of
Music is expected to work as many hours as needed to perform theabove responsibilities. It is anticipated that this will average 15-20hours per week, including worship time.
The Director of Music is expected to attend all three worship serviceseach Sunday, as well as all mid-week services, Christmas Eve, AshWednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Thanksgiving Eveservices, and other special services.
If possible, the Director of Music shall attend regular staff meetingsand retreats.
The Director of Music shall attend Worship and Music Committeemeetings.
The Director of Music shall be permitted 2 Sundays off each year.Special prior permission is required for absences on major churchholidays, including Holy Week and Christmas. It expected that theDirector of Music will miss no more than 4 choir rehearsals per year.
Classification: Part-time

Salary Range: The Director of Music will be compensated at a rate asdetermined in the yearly Church budget as commensurate with experience.The Church will reimburse the Director for all reasonable out-of-pocketexpenses.
