TUNE IN TO “THE LUTHERAN HOUR” TODAY

Speaker: Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler ~ “Practice Makes Perfect”

When we want something to be perfect, we practice it

over and over until it becomes part of us. In the Sermon on the Mount,

Jesus encourages His followers to practice being perfect,

because God already sees them that way, through faith in Christ. (Matthew 5)

Sundays on: KSUM - 11 am • WCCO - 6 am • KBEW - 8:30 am

LARGE PRINT BULLETINS with today’s order of

service and hymns are available on the ushers’ cabinets (or

ask an usher for assistance). They are for one-time use

only; do not return, but take them home and recycle them

there.

THIS MONTH’S BIBLE REFERENCES are sponsored by Chuck &

Mary Williams in thankfulness for God’s many blessings.

OUR SUNDAY BROADCAST at 10:00 a.m. over KSUM is in

thanksgiving to God for the blessing of 60 years of marriage, sponsored by

Opening Hymn: O God, My Faithful God LSB 696 O God, my faithful God,

True fountain ever flowing,

Without whom nothing is,

All perfect gifts bestowing:

Give me a healthy frame,

And may I have within

A conscience free from blame,

A soul unstained by sin.

Grant me the strength to do

With ready heart and willing

Whatever You command,

My calling here fulfilling;

That I do what I should

While trusting You to bless

The outcome for my good,

For You must give success.

Keep me from saying words

That later need recalling;

Guard me lest idle speech

May from my lips be falling;

But when within my place

I must and ought to speak,

Then to my words give grace

Lest I offend the weak.

Lord, let me win my foes

With kindly words and actions, And let me find good friends

For counsel and correction.

Help me, as You have taught,

To love both great and small

And by Your Spirit’s might

To live in peace with all.

Page 4: St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church & School · Speaker: Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler ~ “Practice Makes Perfect” When we want something to be perfect, we practice it over and over

Page 4

Let me depart this life

Confiding in my Savior;

By grace receive my soul

That it may live forever;

And let my body have

A quiet resting place

Within a Christian grave;

And let it sleep in peace.

And on that final day

When all the dead are waking,

Stretch out Your mighty hand,

My deathly slumber breaking.

Then let me hear Your voice,

Redeem this earthly frame,

And bid me to rejoice

With those who love Your name.

Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 28:5-9

Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the

priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the LORD, and the

prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the LORD do so; may the LORD make the

words that you have prophesied come true, and bring back to this place from

Babylon the vessels of the house of the LORD, and all the exiles. Yet hear now

this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The

prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine,

and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet

who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will

be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet.”

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Epistle: Romans 7:1-13

Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—

that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? Thus a married

woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies

she is released from the law of marriage. Accordingly, she will be called an

adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her

husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is

not an adulteress.

Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of

Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the

dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. For while we were living in the

flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to

bear fruit for death. But now we are released from the law, having died to that

which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.

Page 6: St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church & School · Speaker: Rev. Dr. Michael Zeigler ~ “Practice Makes Perfect” When we want something to be perfect, we practice it over and over

Page 6

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not

been for the law, I would not have known sin. I would not have known what it is

to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” But sin, seizing an

opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of

covetousness. Apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the

law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. The very

commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an

opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.

So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin,

producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to

be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 10th chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord. (sung)

Holy Gospel: Matthew 10:34-42 [Jesus said:] “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have

not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his

father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her

mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household.

Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever

loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not

take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will

lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him

who sent me. The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will

receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because

he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever

gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple,

truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ. (sung) Sit

Hymn of the Day: Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus LSB 685 Let us ever walk with Jesus,

Follow His example pure,

Through a world that would deceive us

And to sin our spirits lure.

Onward in His footsteps treading,

Pilgrims here, our home above,

Full of faith and hope and love,

Let us do the Father’s bidding.

Faithful Lord, with me abide;

I shall follow where You guide. Let us suffer here with Jesus

And with patience bear our cross.

Joy will follow all our sadness;

Where He is, there is no loss.

Though today we sow no laughter,

We shall reap celestial joy;

All discomforts that annoy

Shall give way to mirth hereafter.

Jesus, here I share Your woe;

Help me there Your joy to know. Let us gladly die with Jesus.

Since by death He conquered death,

He will free us from destruction,

Give to us immortal breath.

Let us mortify all passion

That would lead us into sin;

And the grave that shuts us in

Shall but prove the gate to heaven.

Jesus, here with You I die,

There to live with You on high. Let us also live with Jesus.

He has risen from the dead

That to life we may awaken.

Jesus, You are now our head.

We are Your own living members;

Where You live, there we shall be

In Your presence constantly,

Living there with You forever.

Jesus, let me faithful be,

Life eternal grant to me.

Distribution Hymn: I Walk in Danger All the Way LSB 716 I walk in danger all the way.

The thought shall never leave me

That Satan, who has marked his prey,

Is plotting to deceive me.

This foe with hidden snares

May seize me unawares

If I should fail to watch and pray.

I walk in danger all the way.

I pass through trials all the way,

With sin and ills contending;

In patience I must bear each day

The cross of God’s own sending.

When in adversity

I know not where to flee,

When storms of woe my soul dismay,

I pass through trials all the way.

And death pursues me all the way,

Nowhere I rest securely;

He comes by night, he comes by day,

He takes his prey most surely.

A failing breath, and I

In death’s strong grasp may lie

To face eternity today

As death pursues me all the way.

I walk with angels all the way,

They shield me and befriend me;

All Satan’s pow’r is held at bay

When heav’nly hosts attend me;

They are my sure defense,

All fear and sorrow, hence!

Unharmed by foes, do what they may,

I walk with angels all the way.

Page 9

I walk with Jesus all the way,

His guidance never fails me;

Within His wounds I find a stay

When Satan’s pow’r assails me;

And by His footsteps led,

My path I safely tread.

No evil leads my soul astray;

I walk with Jesus all the way.

My walk is heav’nward all the way;

Await, my soul, the morrow,

When God’s good healing shall allay

All suff’ring, sin, and sorrow.

Then, worldly pomp, begone!

To heav’n I now press on.

For all the world I would not stay;

My walk is heav’nward all the way.

Distribution Hymn: Lord, Whose Love through Humble Service LSB 848 Lord, whose love through humble service

Bore the weight of human need,

Who upon the cross, forsaken,

Offered mercy’s perfect deed,

We, Your servants, bring the worship

Not of voice alone, but heart,

Consecrating to Your purpose

Ev’ry gift that You impart.

Still Your children wander homeless;

Still the hungry cry for bread;

Still the captives long for freedom;

Still in grief we mourn our dead.

As, O Lord, Your deep compassion

Healed the sick and freed the soul,

Use the love Your Spirit kindles

Still to save and make us whole.

Page 10

As we worship, grant us vision,

Till Your love’s revealing light

In its height and depth and greatness,

Dawns upon our quickened sight,

Making known the needs and burdens

Your compassion bids us bear,

Stirring us to tireless striving,

Your abundant life to share.

Called by worship to Your service,

Forth in Your dear name we go,

To the child, the youth, the aged,

Love in living deeds to show;

Hope and health, goodwill and comfort,

Counsel, aid, and peace we give,

That Your servants, Lord, in freedom

May Your mercy know and live.

MINUTES from the Congregational Assembly meeting are available today at

the Welcome Center.

THOSE LIVING ALONE are often lonely, but in this current situation of

“stay at home” they are even more isolated than usual. Please consider calling

single people, widows, and widowers on the phone to ask how they are doing.

Some people don’t want to burden their adult children with their problems, but

are willing to share their concerns with their friends. If you think someone is

spiritually troubled, please let a pastor know. If you think someone is at risk

emotionally, please encourage that person to get professional help. Christians

are called together as the body of Christ, but we are mostly separated right now

so we need to reach out to help and support each other.

“AND WHOEVER GIVES ONE OF THESE little ones even a cup of

cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose

his reward” (Matt. 10:42). The tithes and offerings you give to the Lord’s work

in His church go to supporting all manner of discipleship. They provide for a

minister of the Gospel to preach, teach, and conduct the Sacraments; they

provide for our missionaries and ministries of mercy here and abroad; and they

make sure that the folks in your area have a place to go to worship the Lord.

The Lord is pleased with this work, and He wants to bless you through

supporting it.

LISTENING OPPORTUNITIES: Broadcast Sunday mornings on KSUM

— Issues, Etc., 9:00 a.m.; St. Paul Lutheran Church weekly church services,

TLCARE MINISTRY IN ROCHESTER, MN—TLCare ministry

desires to serve those needing assistance while in Rochester receiving medical

care through intercessory prayer, either phone or face-to-face contact with one

of their caring members, a ride to church and/or one of their Bible studies.

Beyond that, they try to tailor their ministry to the unique needs of their guests

and feel immensely blessed to have the opportunity to serve Christ in this way.

INVOCATION: “In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Let all say, “AMEN!” CONFESS the Apostles’ Creed. PRAY the Psalm of the Week: Ps. 119:153-160 READ from Small Catechism—The Office of the Keys (1st+) What is the Office of the Keys? The Office of the Keys is that special authority which Christ has given to His church on earth to forgive the sins of repentant sinners, but to withhold forgiveness from the unrepentant as long as they do not repent. (2nd+) Where is this written? This is what St. John the Evangelist writes in chapter twenty: The Lord Jesus breathed on His disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” (3rd+) What do you believe according to these words? I believe that when the called ministers of Christ deal with us by His divine command, in particular when they exclude openly unrepentant sinners from the Christian congregation and absolve those who repent of their sins and want to do better, this is just as valid and certain, even in heaven, as if Christ our dear Lord dealt with us himself.
