Success in Wr it e4Fun Com pet it ion

Makayla Donovan of 9W recently received a certificate for 'Excellence in Writing' in the Write4Fun competition. Her untitled poem was of such a high standard that it was in the top five percent of the thousands of entries received for this competition.

Makayla's poem will now be published in a hardbound volume entitled, 'Spread the Word'.

Congratulations Makayla!

Unt it led

Day came, night stays. The sound of silence deafens my ears. Every heartbeat hurts. Soulless, guilty, faded away.I sacrificed myself for happiness. I once blossomed but that surely died. Every day a petal fell and perished. My soul thrives no more. Alone once again, surrounded by shadows, surrounded by death. My tears drown me as they slowly fill my trap. I had fallen.

After all the rain, and the final approval from the project officers and Sutherland Shire Council following a track upgrade, we finally held our Athletics Carnival.

Many thanks to the 1000 plus students who attended the day, with the high participation rate creating a true carnival atmosphere. Also, thanks to Mrs Franke and Mr Kelly who co-convened the carnival; their efforts to manage the track and field did not go un-noticed, as the College had a very tight time schedule to complete the carnival and were able to do so with a few minutes to spare. Thanks to all the teachers managing the track and field events and crowd control in and out of the grandstand; it is very much appreciated.

A special thank you to the House Captains who generated spirit. The 'get up and have a go' attitude with their house students was great. Thank you to Sean Kunkler, Jesse Colaco, Esther O?Rourke and Charlotte Bishop in Year 10 for their expertise in the computerised data entry. They were inundated with over 300 events of data on the day and completed it all under pressure to an exceptionally high standard.

Congratulations to Nagle for winning the House Champions. Nagle is traditionally a powerhouse in swimming but this is the first time since 1997 that they have won the Athletics Carnival. 2017 Age Champions are -

The Bill Turner Trophy is an Under-15 nationwide schools football competition for girls.St Patrick's entered the Sydney East section which is comprised of all schools from the Sutherland Shire, Eastern Suburbs and St George District. Victories over All Saints Lakemba, Port Hacking High School and Heathcote High School put us into the final. Our opposition in the final was a strong Woolooware High School side who had accounted for Endeavour Sports High School in the semi final.

The game started slowly as both teams sized up one another. The first chance of the game fell to St Pat 's when Bianca Radman opened up a bit of space in the box for herself, only for her shot to rise just over the crossbar. Over the next few minutes St Pat 's had a few more chances come and go as the Woolooware goalkeeper saved well from Bianca after good buildup play between Eve Gardner and Charlotte Kensitt. Andie Robinson struck the post with an effort after another powerful run from the winger. Woolooware broke through near the end of the half but their striker 's effort was closed down well by Olivia Mahony in goals. Alyssa Davis was causing a few problems towards the end of the half which was a sign of things to come. The half ended 0-0 but St Pat 's felt that they had played the better football.

The girls were very positive in the break and said they needed to work hard for one another as well as try to shoot lower to beat the tall opposition goalkeeper.

The second half started and Andie Robinson was proving to be a constant thorn in Woolooware's side as she continued to beat her opposition defender and provide balls into the box. St Pat 's had a huge scare when Woolooware broke free and their striker hit the ball towards the bottom corner from close range. Olivia dived well and stopped this shot and scrambled to help clear the danger. Moments later, strong tackling from Shaylee Moffitt and Bianca Radman in the middle turned the ball over and played in Andie again. Her cross to the near post was contested between Alyssa Davis and the goalkeeper, with Alyssa swinging her leg at the loose ball to put St Pat 's into a 1-0 lead! This was very brave from Alyssa who had to go off injured from the original tackle but still swung her leg to finish this off!

Paris Kilham, Julia Mamo, Tess Ingram, Laura Schwartz and Capri Tuffy were holding the defence well and cutting out any threat from Woolooware. With less than five minutes remaining, Tess found herself in the middle of the field with the ball. After a quick one-two with Lana Giampaoli, Tess was clear with only one defender to beat. She took it past her as if she wasn't there before finishing low into the bottom corner to give St Pat 's a 2-0 lead! St Pat 's managed to see the game out from here to lift it 's first ever Sydney East trophy! We would like to thank each and every one of the girls who are an absolute pleasure to coach. Their spirit, determination and work rate are incredible! We would also like to thank all of the parents for their support during our games, as well as the early morning drop offs to Waratah Oval so far this year!

Being crowned winners of Sydney East puts us into the final 32 schools in the country! We will face the winner of the Central Coast region next, so a well deserved trip to Gosford or Terrigal awaits the girls next term!

Congratulations to Jacob Corry, Ethan Feliciano and Samuel Noakes on their recent success as members of the Sutherland Sharks Under 16 representative team. They were successful in winning the Under 16 Nunawading Basketball Tournament, involving representative teams from NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Jacob was also named MVP of the final.

First XIII Rugby League - Week 8 updat e

Last Thursday the team travelled to Gosford to play the strong St Edwards College team in Round 16 in the NSWCCC Cup. With 11 players unavailable through injury and other matters, it was always going to be a tough game. To the boys credit, they stayed in the game competitively and despite losing a player for the match, kept trying right until the end, even though the 13 remaining players had to play a full game without rest. The 0-24 score line isn't a true reflection of the contest. With our full team I daresay it could have been a very different result, however St Eddy's were clear winners on the day - our first real loss for the season. The silver lining is this places us in the CCC Plate division at next term's final gala day in which we have a real shot at the tit le should the boys recover properly over the holiday break.

Upcoming game: GIO Trophy (district winners knockout)St Pats vs winners of Sydney Metro area (South Sydney HS)Tuesday, 21 June - 1.30pm at Waratah oval. All parents and friends welcome to attend.

Alexandra Weir (Year 10), Andie Robinson (Year 9) and Sarah Heptinstall (Year 8) travelled to Albury last week representing NSWCCC at the NSW All Schools Championships. Tulley McEvoy was also selected but was unable to attend due to a serious leg injury sustained at weekend soccer; we wish her a speedy recovery. Our NSWCCC team won the Championships by winning all three games. They played extremely well and we would like to congratulate Andie and Sarah for being selected in the NSW All Schools team. They will attend a training camp in Canberra during the second week of the school holidays and then travel to Perth to compete at the School Sport Australia Championships. Good luck girls with this wonderful achievement.

Years 9 and 10 It al ian Pom peii Exhibit ion

On Friday, 2 June the Years 9 and 10 Italian classes had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the history and culture of Italy for a day by attending the special Pompeii exhibition.

Here are some of the students? impressions of the day:

Our day began with everyone excitedly arriving at the National Maritime Museum. Upon arriving, we met our guide, who was dressed up as the goddess Nike, for our fascinating day. We were guided into the theatre where we were educated on the importance of storytelling and were also taught basic Latin. Following this, Nike led us to a studio where we legally graffit ied the wall or painted on cardboard. After 30 minutes, we ate cannoli which was kindly provided by our amazing Signora Di Mele. Nike then guided us to an outdoor area where we made mosaics on big tiles using litt le tiles. Our lovely guide then took us to the actual Pompeii exhibit in which we were informed about the Pompeiian culture, history, army and religion. We also watched a 10 minute video on the destruction of Pompeii. Following the exhibit, we had a 30 minute lunch break. Post the lunch break, Nike took us to the bakery where we were educated on Pompeiian food. We also learnt how to knead dough which was then formed into bread and cooked, which we enjoyed eating; it was delicious. Following this, Nike took us to the amphitheatre where we were tutored on gladiators and saw an up-close and personal gladiator match. All in all, we had a very factual and informative day in which we were all well informed about Italy?s history. This was also a fantastic opportunity to connect and bond with our class and teacher. Thank you Ms Di Mele and Ms Prior! Sukhmeet Sooch, Year 9

On Friday, Italian National Day, our small Italian class went on a journey to the Maritime Museum, to engage in the history of Italy, Pompeii. When we arrived, all the staff were dressed in Roman attire, really setting the scene of Pompeii. We heard stories of heroism and cowardice in Pompeiian times, learnt basic Latin, designed Italian frescos graffit i style (legally!), made a mosaic, and snacked on Italian treats, very kindly made by our awesome teacherMiss Di Mele.  After lunch on the harbour we went back into the museum to see the exhibition on Pompeii, amazingly the artifacts were in perfect condition, I found that the most interesting part of the excursion. We then made bread fit for only the highest order Pompeiian citizens, white bread.  While our bread was baking we saw a gladiator battle and we decided the fate of the wounded soldier, live or die. This made me think I was back in Pompeii really watching a fight to the death, I loved the battle!   Sarah Lewis, Year 9

Band Cam p

Last week our College Band students attended the annual Band Camp at the picturesque Rathane Youth Works Centre located in the centre of the National Park. Despite the inclement weather, the two-day retreat was beneficial for our students in their preparation for their BandFest competition on 20 June. Much progress was made during the camp which consisted of band rehearsals, group lessons with experienced tutors and  a concert for parents and teachers, showcasing the student?s skills and benefits of two days of dedicated rehearsal time.  When not rehearsing, students were challenged by archery and indoor climbing, whilst some even braved the cold water on the giant water slide! Friendships were formed and the behaviour of the students was exemplary - a compliment to the families of the students and the College. Special acknowledgment is made to Band Captain Nicholas Vartanian for his organisation of inclusive night games and fun activities for band members. He is an excellent role model for the younger students and is appreciated by teachers as well. Many thanks to the accompanying staff for their invaluable assistance and support over the three days - Mr Moroney, Mr Kazokas, Mr Di Donato, Miss Hickson and Ms Burke. Our biggest thanks goes to Mrs Joan Thorp, our invaluable Band Director, for her organisation, patience and dedication in facilitating such a large event. We hope to see some parents in the audience for our upcoming BandFest competition on 20 June.
