This Sunday – the 34 th Sunday of the Year is always celebrated under the title of the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, the King of the Universe. The allocation of the Gospel for this Solemnity across the three liturgical years is interesting. Year “B” from John 18:22-37 sees Jesus at his trial, while in Year “C” from Luke 23:35-43 we have Jesus on the cross engaging the two thieves in conversation. Today’s Gospel, Matthew 25:31-45 has Jesus continuing his last sermon or teaching, the third and last component. We heard the first two components in the previous two weeks: the wise and foolish virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) and the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). While these two Gospel passages brought out the topics of vigilance and the need to utilise to the best of our ability, with the grace of God, the talents each of us have been given, today’s Gospel sets the scene for the Final Judgement. Jesus stated in Matthew’s Gospel [22:36-40] which was heard on the 30 th Sunday of this Year, that the greatest commandments are two and that they are intrinsically linked: the love of God with our complete being and the love of neighbour as ourselves. In today’s Gospel of the Final Judgement we see how important that commandment is, simply because our eternal reward or punishment – and indeed our judgement -hangs on the way in which we have lived out this central and important commandment. In this Gospel, Jesus addresses two groups of people: the sheep and the goats. To one group is offered a place in the eternal presence of God’s kingdom. To the other is offered ‘eternal fire’. The basis of these promises rests on whether the people being judged (the sheep and the goats) ministered to, or failed to minister to the most marginal of people - the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick and the imprisoned. The list contains those who are most vulnerable in society. Those who have no-one to care or minster to them, in many ways echoing something of the list of people who are named ‘Blessed’ in the Beatitudes [Matthew 5:1-11]. There is no mention of ministering to the rich, wealthy or powerful. The two common features of the dialogue between Jesus and the two groups is firstly that he mentions the same list of people to be ministered by each group. In fact, Jesus goes as far as identifying himself with these vulnerable people. Secondly, both the good (the sheep) and the bad (the goats) fail to recognise that Jesus was present in those ministered to or ignored. The point of this Gospel passage is that judgement is obtained in and through the deeds rendered to these vulnerable people. Even though it speaks volumes about God's judgement, it also has a lot to say about our own judgement. In the end, the final judgment is heavily impacted by the manner and method we use in relating to one another, day in, day out, in the most unique, as well as the most ordinary, of life's events, circumstances, responsibilities and demands. May we continue to experience and recognise Jesus in those to whom we minister, especially the poor and those in need. Last Sunday (November 19 th ) was designated by Pope Francis as the first World Day of the Poor. In the opening paragraph of his message, Francis quotes John the Apostle: ‘Little children, let us not love in word or in speech, but in deed and in truth’ [1 John 3:18]. This echoes the message and challenge of today’s Gospel: our care for the marginalised has to be seen in our deeds, not just in our desires and words. It has to be something real. Today’s parable completes the series that comprises Matthew 25: the parable of the wise and foolish maidens [Matt 25:1-12]; the parable of the talents [Matthew 25:13-40] and the parable of the last judgement [Matthew 25: 31-46]. In this chapter, Matthew, through the use of these parables advises us of the characteristics we require in order to live as disciples in this in-between time, as we await the second coming of Christ. We need to be continually prepared and alert and vigilant. We need to recognise and utilise our talents for the betterment of the Kingdom and thirdly we need to reach out and minister to others as if we were ministering to Jesus himself, found primarily in the marginalised. As we develop these traits we become more devoted to God and God’s ways and we grow in charity as members of his Kingdom. Fr Bob Bossini, Dean & Parish Priest

November 26 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe - Year A

From the Dean’s Desk

Dear Friends,

With this week’s liturgy, we come at last to the end

of the Church’s liturgical year. This Sunday – the

34th Sunday of the Year is always celebrated

under the title of the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, the King of the

Universe. The allocation of the Gospel for this Solemnity across the

three liturgical years is interesting. Year “B” from John 18:22-37

sees Jesus at his trial, while in Year “C” from Luke 23:35-43 we

have Jesus on the cross engaging the two thieves in conversation.

Today’s Gospel, Matthew 25:31-45 has Jesus continuing his last

sermon or teaching, the third and last component. We heard the first

two components in the previous two weeks: the wise and foolish

virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) and the Parable of the Talents (Matthew

25:14-30). While these two Gospel passages brought out the topics

of vigilance and the need to utilise to the best of our ability, with the

grace of God, the talents each of us have been given, today’s Gospel

sets the scene for the Final Judgement.

Jesus stated in Matthew’s Gospel [22:36-40] which was heard on the

30th Sunday of this Year, that the greatest commandments are two

and that they are intrinsically linked: the love of God with our

complete being and the love of neighbour as ourselves.

In today’s Gospel of the Final Judgement we see how important that

commandment is, simply because our eternal reward or punishment –

and indeed our judgement -hangs on the way in which we have lived

out this central and important commandment. In this Gospel, Jesus

addresses two groups of people: the sheep and the goats. To one

group is offered a place in the eternal presence of God’s kingdom. To

the other is offered ‘eternal fire’. The basis of these promises rests

on whether the people being judged (the sheep and the goats)

ministered to, or failed to minister to the most marginal of people -

the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the sick and the

imprisoned. The list contains those who are most vulnerable in

society. Those who have no-one to care or minster to them, in many

ways echoing something of the list of people who are named

‘Blessed’ in the Beatitudes [Matthew 5:1-11]. There is no mention of

ministering to the rich, wealthy or powerful.

The two common features of the dialogue between Jesus and the

two groups is firstly that he mentions the same list of people to be

ministered by each group. In fact, Jesus goes as far as identifying

himself with these vulnerable people. Secondly, both the good (the

sheep) and the bad (the goats) fail to recognise that Jesus was

present in those ministered to or ignored.

The point of this Gospel passage is that judgement is obtained in

and through the deeds rendered to these vulnerable people. Even

though it speaks volumes about God's judgement, it also has a lot to

say about our own judgement. In the end, the final judgment is

heavily impacted by the manner and method we use in relating to

one another, day in, day out, in the most unique, as well as the most

ordinary, of life's events, circumstances, responsibilities and

demands. May we continue to experience and recognise Jesus in

those to whom we minister, especially the poor and those in need.

Last Sunday (November 19th) was designated by Pope Francis as the

first World Day of the Poor. In the opening paragraph of his

message, Francis quotes John the Apostle: ‘Little children, let us

not love in word or in speech, but in deed and in truth’ [1 John

3:18]. This echoes the message and challenge of today’s Gospel:

our care for the marginalised has to be seen in our deeds, not just in

our desires and words. It has to be something real.

Today’s parable completes the series that comprises Matthew 25:

the parable of the wise and foolish maidens [Matt 25:1-12]; the

parable of the talents [Matthew 25:13-40] and the parable of the last

judgement [Matthew 25: 31-46]. In this chapter, Matthew, through

the use of these parables advises us of the characteristics we require

in order to live as disciples in this in-between time, as we await the

second coming of Christ. We need to be continually prepared and

alert and vigilant. We need to recognise and utilise our talents for

the betterment of the Kingdom and thirdly we need to reach out and

minister to others as if we were ministering to Jesus himself, found

primarily in the marginalised. As we develop these traits we become

more devoted to God and God’s ways and we grow in charity as

members of his Kingdom.

November Mass envelopes are available in the narthex. Please print the names CLEARLY as we like to print the names correctly in the Book of Remembrance. Envelopes may be placed on the collection plate or in the mail box at the presbytery. Individual intentions for the dead are not prayed for during November, rather all souls are prayed for at all masses. Special intentions for the living, however, can still be made.
