St. Ninian’s High School

S3 Parent Information Evening

2

Welcome Dear Parent / Carer Thank you for attending our Third Year Information Evening. I hope that you find the evening both informative and enjoyable. I wish to start by thanking you for your continued support of all staff and the school. It is clear that our young people have excellent support networks at home and the purpose of evenings such as this one is to continue to support families with a programme of family learning activities. This evening’s main focus is to build on the curricular evening which took place at this time last year. Tonight we focus on Literacy, Numeracy and Health & Wellbeing. Through lessons and assemblies pupils continue to hear about the need to balance their commit-ments with social aspects through regular exercise and co-curricular opportunities. Within the school you will notice several displays offering advice on how to maintain positive mental health; more information on this important aspect of our school life can be found on the school website. In addition to curricular information, updates on the many extra curricular activities enjoyed by Third Year can be found on the school website / Third Year website and twitter. Thank you for your continued support with Third Year and I look forward to continuing to work in partnership to support your son / daughter. Advice from Principal teachers and S3 class teachers

Art - Stay on task and follow departmental timelines. Everything pupils do from S3 to March of S4 counts towards the folio.

Hospitality - 2.5hr assessment in S4 to prepare 3 dishes so practice at home if possible. All S3 recipes and past SQA recipes are on departmental website.

Creative industries - To develop skills always try to contribute even if outwith comfort zone.

Design & Manufacture - Use full range of resources on GLOW

Graphic Communication - build on all skills developed so far as everything leads towards S4.

Business Studies - Prepare short study notes regularly (after each lesson). Do not do all at once.

Administration- Practice keyboard and presentation skills by typing revision notes / PowerPoint for other subjects

Computing - Practice at home as software used in school is accessible online

Chemistry - Use pupil evaluations to target revision. Attend Wednesday lunchtime supported study. Join S3 Microsoft Teams – pupil code 368gx3i

Biology - 10 minutes of revision each night

Geography - Understand what the question is actually asking through practice

English - Reading every day. Revise notes regularly

Mathematics - Use Pegasus booklet on website. Attend S1-3 HW club on Alternate Thursdays

History & Modern studies - Lots of course content. Revise and organise notes regularly

French - Learn vocabulary each night

Spanish - Rigour – ensure detailed homework by using notes thoroughly.

Music - Regular practice – 10 minutes each night is better than 1 hr every 2/3 days.

Drama - Same terminology is required throughout the course so keep reading over text book. If possible attend theatre productions with or without school

Physics— Develop good habits of using study guides along with notes to target main points. Attend after school drop in on Wednesday and Thursday if required.

PE—use course notes regularly and listen carefully to all instructions

Faith Life in St Ninian’s High School As a Community of Faith we are continually reminded of the values of love, truth, justice and peace. We have been celebrating the Centenary of Catholic Education in Scotland through many events and services. We celebrated Holy Mass as a year group on both the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Solemnity of All Saints. We are pleased to continue to invite you to our Oratory for Holy Mass on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 8.25am, Eucharistic Adoration on Friday's at lunchtime and our Monday lunchtime Novena. It is wonderful to see our Oratory busy with our young people and their families. We have published an excellent audit of the Faith Life of the school which can be found on our school website.
