Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Reading I : Amos 6:1a, 4-7
Don't be complacent!
Today’s reading from the prophet, Amos, refers to a time of great wealth in the northern kingdom
of Israel.
This week the emphasis is on the self-indulgence of the wealthy. Amos rebukes them for their
indifference to the needs of others.
Because of their disregard for the poor the wealthy will be the first to go into exile.
Reading II : 1 Timothy 6:11-16
Fight the good fight of faith.
Paul’s use of the term “man of God” in reference to Timothy is important because it is a title
applied to Moses-a great leader.
Timothy’s position as a leader demands that he give witness to Christ and seek after virtue,
especially those virtues that build up the church.
True teaching does not destroy communities and lead to division and arrogance.
Gospel : Luke 16:19-31 Keep your eye on God's way of life.
In the gospel readings prior to today’s gospel the religious leaders had rejected Jesus teachings
about possessions. This parable addresses their attitude.
The rich man was oblivious to the needs of the poor beggar, not realizing the seriousness of his
complacency.
The indifference of the rich man led him to an eternal situation worse than that of Lazarus on
earth.
Theme: God cares for the poor and the oppressed, and we should too!
Step One: Listen to the Word When you hear the story of the rich man, Lazarus, what catches your ear in it? What word or
phrase really strikes you?
Step Two: Look into Your Life
Question for Children: Jesus teaches us to share what we have with others. What do you have
that you are able to share?
Question for Youth: The Gospel story tells us that we are judged by what we do or don’t do for
the poor and needy. How are you currently reaching out to those in need? What more could you
do?
Question for Adults: What choices can you or have you made to balance your own life with those
who are homeless, poor and in need of assistance for daily living? How does this Gospel reading
inform you about that?
26º domingo en tiempo ordinario
Primera Lectura : Amós 6:1a, 4-7
¡No sean presumidos!
Evangelio : Lucas 16:19-31
Have you thought about becoming a Catholic?

Meditation: Luke 16:1-13 No servant can serve two masters. (Luke 16:13)
Have you heard about the dying man who won the lottery?
Concerned that the excitement would be too much for him, the
man’s family asked their parish priest to tell him the good news.
When the pastor told the man that he had won $10 million, the
man replied, “I want to give half of it to the Church.” The priest
was so surprised that he had a heart attack. This little joke tells
us how much of an impact money can have on us.
Today’s Gospel asks us, “What is your attitude toward
money?” Here are a few ideas that might help you answer that
question.
First, having money is not a sin. It’s our love of money that
separates us from God. Jesus wants to be first in our lives—
above our money and possessions.
Second, Jesus asks us to be good stewards of our money. He
wants us to be prudent, honest, and responsible. We should
never allow greed or dishonesty to dominate us. Instead, we
should use our money wisely, invest it wisely, and be as
generous as we can.
Third, donating to the Church and other charities, even if we
can give only a small amount, is a key aspect of our
stewardship. Scripture calls us to hear “the cry of the poor”
(Proverbs 21:13). We can be assured that whenever we give
away our earthly treasures, God will reward us with heavenly
treasures—“eternal dwellings” (Luke 16:9).
Finally, remember that your money is not yours; it belongs to
God. The moment you die, you will no longer own your money.
Yes, you can give it to your children or to charity. However,
money will be absolutely useless to you. The only way it will
matter is the degree to which you have used it to help people:
your family, your friends, the Church, and the poor.
Money is a very complex and emotional topic, so ask the
Holy Spirit to help you learn how to keep it in the right
perspective.
“Jesus, teach me to be a good steward.”

O glorious Saint Nicholas, the noble preacher of
Christ, thou art a great and fervid helper of those
in difficulties, of those who are on land, and of
those who are at sea, all-compassionate, a
precious intercessor for those who are far off and
those who are near. Wherefore, in our gathering
we shout to thee to intercede with the Lord, that
we be delivered from every tribulation.
