Jeremy writes...I’m writing this on Good Friday, in betweenservices. This is the middle of the greatest ofChristian festivals and one of the busiest times ofyear for clergy. Yes, we really are expected towork more than one day of the week. The cheek of it!

Looking out of my study window I can seethe garden springing to life and heal thedistant wail of a lawnmower calling itsfaithful to that regular summer ritual ofholding back the tide of nature, despite thefact that it’s raining. It will be good not to have any major festivals for afew months and instead turn my attention to other tasks, even thegarden.

It would be good, if that were the case, but it is not. During this monthwe mark the Ascension, the time when the risen Jesus ascended to theFather. Ascension is actually a hugely important event in the Christianstory: Jesus is born at Christmas, dies and rises at Easter, and ascends atAscension (obvious when you think about it). For Christians itssignificance is that the story can now continue with a new chapter.Pentecost, and the birth of the Church, becomes possible. In theseevents the task that Jesus took upon himself in his teaching and servingis transferred to a new body of people, the Church, who are ordained byGod to carry on that task until Jesus returns again.

The work of Jesus is, at least in theory, the work the Church tries to dotoday. Okay, sometimes we get it wrong, even disastrously so. Moreoften we think that Sunday is the task of the Church, when actually it isour day off, the time when we gather together to be refreshed in ourfaith so that we can continue in God’s work the rest of the week.Ultimately, the true meaning of this Christian faith is conveyed, not inour ceremonies and sermons, but in our daily living every day. That’s ademanding task but one, as Ascension and Pentecost remind us, we donot struggle with alone.

It helps if thereis some continuity and knowledge of what has been shared but newquestions arise all the time as we think about the world and our life offaith. If this is of interest then note the date in your diary and turn upon the day; no advance booking is needed. Karen Curnock

Beer WI Newsletter April 2018We were very pleased to have progress reports on JeanDavies and Sue Ball and wish them well with their on-going recovery. For some of us, it was not the first time that we hadencountered The Devon Free Wheelers, a charitableorganisation which started as a support network to the NHS across Devon todeliver blood for out of hours emergencies. We were pleased to hear that theyare receiving sufficient donations to allow them to meet the need and since theirinception now also deliver drugs, baby nutrition and tissue for transplantbetween the hours of 5pm and 7.00am. Where it saves time, they work incollaboration with their counterparts in Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. It hasbecome a vital life-saving service, one with which we would not wish to bewithout and members were happy to add to the donation tin.The project to sell Bamboo cups to encourage residents and visitors to stop usingsingle-use plastic water bottles is making good progress. We have already takenorders and sold some and you can get involved when we work with villagepartners such as The Horticultural Society, Beer Village Heritage and Beer BagProject and the Sailing Club, selling them at coffee mornings, table top sales andthe Village Festival. If you wish to get involved or have other ideas for reducingthe plastic pollution on our beach and in the sea come and talk to us. Look for therefill symbol in our pubs and coffee/tea shops where you can use your cup.The walking club are doing a sponsored walk at the end of April, as part of a“Women Walk the World” event. We are aiming to raise money for low-casteIndian women to teach them nutrition and how to grow crops to feed theirfamilies. Some members attended the Spring Council Meeting in Torquay and heard aninspiring talk by Martine Wright MBE, a survivor of the 7/7 tube bombing whodespite losing both her legs has used her adversity to build a new life and sherepresented GB in sitting volleyball at the 2012 Paralympics. She is currentlyCaptain of the team and hopes to go to Tokyo. Her humble, yet powerfulmessages had resonance for us all about seizing opportunities and living your life, however that may be, to the full.On the 25th, we are hosting the local Group Spring meeting in The Dolphin, whenwe will welcome members from Seaton, Musbury and Whitford, Colyton andColyford. We are looking forward to hearing “The Story of Butlins Holiday Camp.”Our next meeting is our Annual Meeting so there will be no talk. You can join usagain in June when our speaker is Janet East on “The trials and tribulations ofrunning a small rural farm.” Come as a guest and see if you would like to join ouractive Institute.

We hope that you’ve been to look at the Fine Foundation Centresince it has been opened for the season. Trevor, Mike, Peter andothers have been busy tidying up the area behind the building andadding some new attractions for younger folk. Special thanks to theWood family for their artistic contributions and to Mike for another ofhis “button boxes”. Inside the building we have started a new exhibitto showcase Beer lace and have recognised that we need to put insome more lighting. The fish tanks are up and running with acollection of fish in residence. We’re grateful to the fishermen whohave contributed a number of things including the lobster, whelks andhermit crabs. Our own efforts at fishing haven’t been very productive– the rock pools have continued to be cold. You’ll be pleased to know that although some of the bats may haveobjected to lots of visitors on the Bat Day at Beer Quarry Caves, theyhave all returned to their normal haunts and are beginning to maketheir way to their summer quarters. The Branscombe Project talk was on Mud Larking on the Thameswhich showed how debris found along the tide-line can be used to tellstories about life in London at various times. For instance, you canfind pins near some drainage outlets. They would have been used tohold dresses together – before the days of zips – and ladies will havelost them when walking, possibly several miles away. The last eventof this season will be on Monday 30th April and will be a DramaDocumentary. You now need a licence before you can pick up anything on theforeshore of the Thames in London – let’s hope that idea doesn’tcatch on with authorities who manage our beaches! Apart fromanything else, I don’t know how that idea would affect our beachcleans! The first WI Beach Clean went well, and the next one isplanned for Thursday May 3rd. We’ll be there as well, so do comealong and help. In the meantime, the picker-uppers are outside of thecentre and you are welcome to borrow them at any time.Henry and I spent a very cold, dank day at Abbotsbury Sub-tropicalGardens on the Saturday of Easter weekend, at the “Eat Dorset”event. Our mission was to launch a new trail in the garden toencourage youngsters – and those not so young – to use all of theirsenses to find particular plants such as living fossils, like monkey

puzzle trees. Hopefully when you visit, you will be able to enjoy thetrail without getting knee-deep in mud!If you’d like to be involved with Beer Village Heritage, you’ll find mostof our events advertised on our website -www.beervillageheritage.org.uk In addition we try to keep those onour email list informed of a variety of heritage related activities aroundthe area.If you’d like to know more, just ask one of ourregular helpers such as Nick Jones, MikeGreen, Chris Jones, Carol Green, TrevorWood, Jean Wood, Henry Jaggers or NorahJaggers.

We're All In This TogetherHere's an idea. What if I change my way of seeing otherpeople as 'other' people? What if I see them likewise to meas close members of the One human family? How aboutthat? Nobody is other. We're all here together goingthrough it: Life. And each of us is contributing his or herown portion of the infinite gamut of all possible life-experiences. What would that mean? It would mean thatevery single person on the face of the earth is due a massiveTHANK YOU from everybody else. For what? Forfostering homeless children. For undergoing the grief ofsudden loss of loved ones. For unconsciously inflictingcruelty on fellow humans, and so teaching us what theunconscious does. For caring for loved ones. For choosingto do the right and not the easy thing. For enduring disease. For taking responsibility. For persevering. For goingthrough depression. For being selfless. For being selfish,so we see what it is. For succeeding and for failing. Andfor all the other ways human beings endure in life. ThankYou - Thank Me - Thank Us. Thank you to all of us forwhat we put into the store of total human experience.Because we are one life, aren't we. One commonconsciousness underneath all the variations in conditioning. We find ourselves here, we stick it out, we endure. Good onus. Some have a light burden, some a dead weight of care.It all goes into the common store, the human racial geneticstorehouse. Well done us. Take a pat on the back.Congratulations. For what? For going through all thetribulations of your - yes, you, your - life and putting thatinto the communal pot of human experience. You-Me didthat, not 'others.' There aren't any others. Just us. Together.

Beer Parish Council NewsletterApril 2018As mentioned in the previous newsletter we had our AnnualParish Meeting on the 3rd April. We were introduced toRichard Cohen, EDDC Deputy Chief Executive and AnitaWilliams, EDDC Principal Solicitor, who are dealing with theTransfer of Assets to Beer Parish Council, scheduled forAutumn 2018. Richard gave us an insight into the DistrictCouncil’s view of the asset transfer and the pitfalls EDDCwould like to avoid. The annual monies that they receive fromthe government have more than halved since 2011 from £7mto £3m, which is one reason why they are trying to streamlinetheir operations and transfer assets to be managed at a locallevel by Parish and Town Councils. As Beer is the first ParishCouncil to pioneer the transfer of assets, EDDC is cautiousthat every eventuality is considered in the probability thatother councils may follow in Beer’s footsteps, hence thedelay until the Autumn. Also, at the Annual Parish Meeting a representative from theBeer branch of the Royal British Legion suggested that theywould like to commemorate the 100th anniversary of theend of the First World War by planting an avenue of treesalong the lower part of Beer Head car park, not only inmemory of the fallen Beer parishioners but also the soldiersthat returned. They are planning to plant the trees low downin the car park to avoid intruding on people’s view of the bay.If anyone has any thoughts or considerations concerning thissuggestion, please contact the Parish [email protected]’s Green Recycling Waste Scheme is available touse from May. For a small fee of £48/year, EDDC will pick upany green waste such as grass cuttings, flowers, leaves andsmall tree branches. They will pick up every other weekwhich is about £2/collection. If you are interested in taking

-- 23 --

advantage of the scheme please contacteastdevon.gov.uk/green or call 01395 571515.EDDC is currently consulting about car parking in theEDDC area - if anyone is interested in filling out aquestionnaire to help the District Council make an informeddecision about any car park reform, including the charges, then please go to http://eastdevon.gov.uk/consultation-and-surveys/car-park-reviewThe Parish Council is planning to improve the recreationalarea at Little Hemphay, by removing the nettles/weeds andplanting some harder wearing grass seeds. This willhopefully tidy the area up and make it more user friendly, while still benefitting the environment. The area may betemporarily closed for a few days for the requiredmaintenance work. Finally, we are regularly asked whether we can do anythingabout dog fouling in public areas. Not only does this subjectupset many people, it is irresponsible and unpleasant.Although the finger is sometimes pointed at visitors to thevillage, we do not think locals are blameless. If you witness any dog fouling incidents, please contactEDDC as the appropriate authority to take action. EDDCworks with local communities to raise awareness of this anti-social behaviour and to encourage responsible dogownership. If sufficient evidence is available EDDC will issuefixed penalty notices. You can report dog fouling to EDDC using the East Devonmobile app. by phone 01395 517528 or [email protected] Alternatively use this websitelinkhttp://eastdevon.gov.uk/environmental-maintenance/dog-fouling/report-dog-fouling/
