    Dear Parents/Guardians:

It has been an action packed and exciting school year at St. Maurice! During the spring months, we enjoyed a number of class trips, Junior Volleyball and Basketball, Interme-diate Soccer, W5H, Track and Field, Junior Achievement, Scientists in the School,

    Parent Information and What’s New!

    St. Maurice Parent Distribution List

Please become part of our Parent Distribution List. It is a great way to receive information, newsletters and other communication. All communication is BCC and sent by the princi-pal. Please forward your email address in a note or email [email protected] and the pr incipal will add you to the list. We are hoping to go paperless with our school correspondence.

The St. Maurice Catholic School Parent Council

The Catholic School Parent Council is a group made up of parents, teachers, the Principal and others who care about their school and want to be part of their child’s education. It is a way for parents or guardians to learn about what is going on at St. Maurice Catholic School. The Council talks about issues and then gives some advice to the school Principal on things that affect all of our children. We also try to raise money through different fundraisers like the chocolate almond sales. This money is then given back to the school to help with things like buying equipment for the school or helping students in financial need to pay for school trips, uniforms, etc. For example, the Parent Council is providing funding so that all students will receive agendas at no cost. We believe agendas are an invaluable organization and communication tool and that is why we are paying for them. Parents and guardians are invited to come to the meetings and/or volunteer their time at our different events and fundraisers. Cur-riculum Night will occur in September and our Annual General Meeting is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday September 29th. If you are interested in getting the agenda and minutes of our meetings via email, please send your email address to [email protected] . If you don’t have an email address, you can call the school office 416-393-5379 or come to one of our meetings to learn more. All minutes are posted on the school website. We would like to thank the following parents and staff for their generous support on the Parent Council: Natalia Marriott, Al Foster, Debbie Boyes, Johnny Forte, Sandra Rebelo, Dennis Caron, Angelo Casarella, Franka Anic-Matic, Tracy Ludlow, Antonella D’An-drea, Tanina Casarella, Lylah Bonneville, Tracy Hart, Karen Rios, Christy Davidson, and Sara DeDominicis.

    FIRST DAY PROCEDURES

On Tuesday, September 5th, 2017, the student in grades one to eight will assemble in the school yard. Signs will be posted along with a class list indicating your child’s teacher for 2017-2018 school year. Kindergarten students will gather in the Kindergarten Yard.

CLASS ORGANIZATION & COMBINED GRADES When the children come to school on Tuesday, September 5th a class and grade organization will be already in place. The decision as to which class a child has been placed in is completed with discussion between the teachers and the principal. The various abilities, needs and strengths of the students are considered in their class placement. It is im-portant to understand that due to a possible increase or de-crease in enrolment, changes may need to be made in grade organization, teacher assignments and the placement of children, during the month of September or early October.

Interested in Parent Involvement? Want to Help Others Become More Engaged in Catholic Education? The Toronto Catholic Parent Involvement Committee is a provincially mandated and funded committee, which supports student achievement through increased parent involvement. Members of CPIC work locally within their own wards, and also provide information and advice on parent engagement to the school board. The committee strategizes and plans initiatives and events that promote and facilitate parent engagement, and helps parents to support their children’s learning at home and/or at school. Toronto CPIC members are volunteer parents/guardians, who bring forward information and ideas from their own wards, and relay important decisions and important information from the central table back to the parents in their area. If this sounds of interest, consider running for election in the fall of 2017. Don’t have the time to serve on a committee? Consider nominating someone for the committee, and remember to come out and vote for your CPIC representa-tive. Visit www.tcdsb.org soon for detailed election information.

    TCDSB School Calendar for 2017-2018

After consultation with stakeholders and our coterminous board, the TCDSB modified school year calendar for 2016-2017 was approved by the Board. We are required to align our holidays and Professional Activity Days with our coterminous Board, the Toron-to District School Board, in order to offset transportation costs. The school year calendar is defined as the period between September 1 and June 30 and must include a mini-mum of 194 school days, seven (7) of which must be Professional Activity Days.

    Mathematics at Home

We wish to work closely with families to develop literacy and numeracy skills . We ask parents/guardians to encourage students to use math every-day to solve real world problems. Help children improve their mental math by having them work with numbers and solve equations without pencil and paper. Staff are teaching mental math skills—please ask your children what they have learned and have them solve math questions. Here are a few websites you students can go to de-velop math skills: http://www.tcdsb.org/ProgramsServices/

Ontario Ecoschools GOLD MEDAL ST. MAURICE!

Congratulations St. Maurice! We are a Certified Ontario Ecoschool—Gold Medal. Thank you to families, staff and volunteers for your help. A special thank you to Mr. and Ms. Casarella for their help with recycling and Terracy-cle. We are fourth in Canada for the Terracycle Recy-cling Challenge thanks to the hard work and dedication of Ms. Casarella.

There is more work to be done. We need your help. Please try to pack litterless lunches and use reusable containers. We thank Rexdale Community Centre for their donation of St. Maurice reusable water bottles. We need to continue to improve recycling, reduce waste and conserve energy. We are also looking into ways to green our school yard. We will, of course, continue to learn about being responsible stewards of the Earth. Trash for Cash and Terracycle programs will continue. Thank you to Ms. Craig, Ms. Wiseman, Ms. Ryan and the entire Ecoteam for their hard work this year! Congratulations St. Maurice!

    GRADE EIGHT GRADUATION!

Our Grade Eights Graduated on Thursday, June 22, 2017. They were cheered and clapped out on Friday and gathered at Trans-figuration Church Monday evening. ME TO WE TEAM—WAY TO GO! The Me to We team is proud to announce that our school has raised $250.00 through the Easter campaign of egg painting and other fun activities. The Primary students were an extremely eager bunch and enjoyed the various activities. The money raised will be donated to the Me to We foundation to purchase five goats for needy African communities. The goats provide nutrition and income for families. The steady income from the sale of extra goat milk allows children to attend school as well as provide money for much needed clothing and medicine. This invaluable donation empowers people to help themselves and their communities in the long term. The Me to We team at St. Maurice School, is proud to be able to support efforts that pro-vide resources to individual families and their communities in our global village. Thank you parents and students for your contribu-tions to this worthwhile cause. Thank you to Ms. Iozzo, Ms. Zeppieri, Ms Wachulka, Ms. Raimon-do, and all who helped with this very important cause.
