Reflection: The call of the prophet Isaiah is
to live in right relationships … with our
neighbor, with our world and with our God.
The glory of God is the light to the nations that
leads and guides us in our deeds and our
speech. We dispel the darkness when our light
removes oppression, false accusations and
malicious speech. Does my light shine in our
world?
Psalm 112 The just man is a light in
darkness to the upright.
Reading II
1 Corinthians 2: 1-5
I have announced to you the
mystery of Christ crucified.
Reflection: St. Paul reminds the people of
Corinth that God works through perceived
weaknesses. The grace of God’s Spirit changes
weakness so that the power of the Cross brings
forth light. Faith then rests in God. Do I
believe God’s work in my life, so my perceived
weakness become the glory of God fully
revealed?
Gospel Matthew 5: 13-16
You are the light of the world.
Reflection: St. Matthew’s gospel continues
to describe what it looks like when we are
followers of Jesus. We are salt and light,
Jesus says. Not the saltiness in our world
that is sharp or foul, but a salt that enhances
and brings forth. Not the blinding light that
is overwhelming or unpleasant, but a light that
shines and reveals. Am I salt of the earth and
light for the world?
Anima Christi
Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within your wounds, hide me.
Permit me not to be separated from you.
From the wicked enemy defend me.
At the hour of my death call me,
bid me come to your side, that with your
saints I may praise you forever and ever.
Amen

PASTOR’S CORNER
We celebrate the beginning of Black History
Month. We pray today for African American
Families and invite you to keep this prayer at
home during the month ahead.
The Association for the Study of African
American Life and History (ASALH)
foundation has named the Black History
Month theme as “African Americans and the
Vote.” As a community, we will examine the
voting practices and the voices of African
Americans in the political structures and
cultural fabric of our nation. Sunday
Conversation on February 16, will be led
by our Social Concerns Commission.
Tomorrow is the feast of St. Blaise. During
the early 300’s CE, Bishop Blaise worked
for the spiritual well-being and physical
health of his people. Bishop Blaise was
killed for his faithfulness to God. While he
was in prison, a child who was choking was
brought to him. Through his intercession,
the child was able to breathe. Our
Church’s tradition is to bless throats on this
feast day. We will bless throats at the end
of today’s Mass.
The Parish Pastoral Council meets today
after mass. They will continue examining
the documents that guide their
commissions. They will also continue the
nomination process for service on the
pastoral council and the leadership needs in
our parish.
We are grateful for Fr. Chris Schroeder,
S.J., who joined us and presided at our
Sunday Mass this weekend.

This year's theme for National Black History Month is
"African Americans and the Vote.” [ASALH]
2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the Fifteenth Amendment
(1870) which gave the right of black men to vote following the
Civil War. This year's theme recognizes the struggle for voting
rights among black men and women throughout American
history. It is an ongoing struggle experienced by people of color
that continues into the 21st century.
Before the Civil War, free black men first petitioned state legislatures for the right to vote.
It was not until 1870 when the 15th Amendment was ratified. This Amendment to the U.S.
Constitution granted African American men the right to vote by declaring that the "right of
citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or
by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." Although
ratified on February 3, 1870, the promise would not be fully realized for almost a century.
Through the use of poll taxes, literacy tests and other means, Southern states in particular,
were able to effectively disenfranchise African Americans from their right to vote. The
passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 allowed the majority of African Americans in the
South to register and to vote.

PRAYER FOR
THE AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMILY
GOD OF MERCY AND OF LOVE we place our African American Families
before You today. May we be proud of our history and never forget those who paid
a price for our liberation. Bless us one by one, and keep our hearts and minds
fixed on higher ground. Help us to live for You and not for ourselves and may
we cherish and proclaim the gift of life. Bless our parents, guardians, grandparents,
relatives, and friends. Give us the amazing grace to be the salt of the earth and the
light of the world. Help us as Your children to live in such a way that the beauty and
greatness of authentic love is reflected in all that we say and do. Give a healing
anointing to those who are less fortunate, especially the motherless, the fatherless,
the homeless, the broken, the sick and the lonely. Bless our departed family members
and friends. May they be led into the light of Your dwelling place, where we will never
grow old, where we will share the fullness of redemption and shout the victory for all eternity.
This we ask in the precious name of Jesus, Our Savior and blessed Assurance.
Amen
Mary, Mother of Our Families, pray for us.
Prayer composed by: Fr. James Goode, OFM, Ph.D. (Founder, 1989, of the National Day of Prayer for the African American and African Family)
