The Principal's Address and Report for the Year 2015-2016.

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen and my dear students. I warmly welcome you to the Annual Awards Day for the academic year 2015-2016. It is my pleasure and privilege to extend a cordial welcome to our Guests of Honour, Mr. & Mrs. Adam to this evening's programme. Mr. and Mrs. Adam, your son, our out-going School Captain of the year 2015-2016, has done you proud and brought you to this memorable day…… Congratulations!

It has been just a year since I took over the reins of this reputed school from the capable hands of Fr. Kenneth Misquitta S.J. I owe a

debt of gratitude to him and also to all my predecessors for the legacy that they have passed on to me.

Members of the staff, distinguished guests and my dear students,

It is my honour and privilege to welcome all of you to the 152nd Annual Awards Day of St. Mary's School (ICSE). On behalf of the St. Mary's ICSE family, I extend a warm welcome to our guests of honour for this evening Mr. and Mrs. Adam, the proud parents of Ahmed Adam, our out-going School Captain of the year 2015-2016.‘International Year of Pulses' is the theme chosen for this evening's programme. The 68th UN General Assembly declared 2016 the International Year of Pulses (IYP). The IYP 2016 aims to highten public awareness of the nutritional benefits of pulses as a part of sustainable food production aimed towards food security and nutrition. The year will create a unique opportunity to encourage connections throughout the food chain that would better utilize pulse-based proteins, further global production of pulses, better utilize crop rotations and address the challenges in the trade of pulses. Just as there are a variety of pulses, likewise, the Jesuits and Jesuit education seeks to cater to various needs of the children in order to help them discover and blossom in their potentials, talents and abilities. Today, the significance of Jesuits in the field of education in India itself, can be gauged by the number of quality educational institutions run by them in the country. There are more than one hundred major Jesuit educational and professional institutions in the country, rendering invaluable service in the nation building process.

Pre-Primary and Primary Section

Life is really nothing without love and care. Give it to everyone but don't expect it back because it's a feel, not a deal. This was the message conveyed to the Kindergarten parents as we began the year with an Orientation Programme. Likewise, there was an Orientation for every class, where the emphasis on our ethos was of paramount importance.

3

The Pre - Primary section is a little world by itself, where life is full of exciting possibilities. The events are best described in pictures. Students were taken on excursions to various interesting places like the Jigamata Udyan, Museum, Monsoon Bus Ride, Mahendra Park, Yellow Bus Ride, Traffic Park, Fire Station, Aquarium, the Malabar Hill Post Office, The Kamla Nehru Park, Chowpatty Beach, The Race Course, M.P.T. Gardens and Nehru Science Centre. The Pre-Primary Sports Day highlighted the specific set of skills that the children had learnt through the year. The competitive spirit clubbed with team work was very evident with every child cheering and encouraging his classmates during their tasks. The traditional parent-child dance was performed with enthusiasm and glee.

The Preppies spoke on stage with ease and confidence for their Plain Speaking event and also pitched well at the Music Festival, exhibiting the important skills of listening and concentrating.

The Primary students recited their class poems followed by individual stanzas confidently and with correct pronunciation and expressions. It also helped them to overcome stage fear.

Students of Class 4 participated in the Inter- House Indian and Western Music Talent Contest. Both the vocal and instrumental categories were judged by eminent and talented musicians.

The objective of the festivals of plays is to enhance the vocabulary, diction and voice modulation. It also promotes team work. It encourages self – esteem and self- discipline which was witnessed in our plays.

Quiz time created an excitement, a challenge and an opportunity for the students to learn new facts. The aim was to develop healthy competition among our students so that each one strives to achieve their very best.

The theme for the Primary Sports Festivals was “Our Country India” where our little Marians showcased the varied cultural heritage of the different states of India.

The Annual Exhibition brought to the fore the talents of every student, transforming the classrooms and the Assembly Hall into the most colourful area. The “pottery” workshop was a handson experience for students of the Pre-Primary and Primary to learn and mould clay pots using the potter's wheel.Children's Day was a day of fun with games of skill, entertainment, delicious snacks and exciting prizes.

The teachers of the Pre- Primary and Primary have been updating their teaching skills by attending workshops like Teach and Tech where various forms of technology was used to

4

enhance classroom teaching . A Music Workshop was organised by “Furtado's School of Music’, a math seminar was conducted by the Periwinkle Books group and a Phonics Workshop by Periwinkle publications.Every class in the primary section has a smart board installed thus making learning for students more fun, colourful and exciting

A child is like a butterfly in the wind. Some can fly higher than others, but each one flies the best it can. So, why compare one against the other? Each one is different. Each one is special and each one is beautiful.

Thank you,

Ms Nirmala FernandesSupervisorPre-Primary and Primary Section

SPORTS ( 2015 -16 )Roger Bannister, the first man to run the mile in less than 4 minutes once wrote,

"Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest lion if it is to stay alive. Every morning a lion wakes up knowing it must run faster than the slowest gazelle if it is to survive. It doesn't matter if you are lion or gazelle … when the sun comes up, you better be running."

Our world may not be as harsh as the African Serengeti, but in the modern jungle, stiff competition in every facet of life and a constantly changing world, makes it necessary for every individual to be capable of hitting the ground running at an early age.

While classroom teaching equips the child with technical and subject-matter competence, it is the sports-field that helps a child to develop agility of mind and body, an appreciation of team-work , a passion for excellence and the will and stamina to go the extra mile … on the field of play and in the game of life.

St. Mary's ICSE has always been at the vanguard of the sports’ movement across schools and has ever encouraged full participation of all students in several sports’ disciplines.

SOCIAL OUTREACH PROGRAMMEEumindEumind means Europe meets India. It is an Educational and Ecological initiative between India and Europe. This certified programme has been introduced in St. Mary's for the boys of class 9 under my guidance and coordinated by Ms. Sakina Japanwala and Mr. Austin Vas. In December 2015,the Eumind team of Wolfert Van Borselen School from Netherlands interacted with our students and shared informative knowledge that they had gained during their respective research projects. They also discussed the various social, political and environmental issues faced by their country. The school organized a weekend stay-over for the tribal children of Gyan Mata High School, Uplat Patilpada, Talasari, which is our adopted twin school. The children enjoyed their stay with us here at St. Mary's. Our students participated in the Terry Fox Marathon and raised a sum of Rs. 11,000 for Cancer Research. Young, talented and creative minds from classes 6 to 9 of St Mary's School ICSE, along with VEDANT WELFARE FOUNDATION have taken up the initiative to adopt a village, inspired by our Prime Minister's plan “Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna” for taking care of their needs, providing basic infrastructure, i.e., sanitation, building

overhead water tanks, bore wells, construction of temporary sheds, providing clothing and food. Art Master S. Ravindranath, inspired them to display Our School Secondarytheir creative ideas through the medium of canvas. Around 150 paintings were displayed at the Cymroza Art Gallery. This function was inaugurated by Snehal Ambekar, the Mayor of Mumbai.

The unique feature of this tour was the group travelling as one big St Mary's family, as parents of the students were also allowed to accompany them.

AlumniThe Annual Alumni dinner organized on 27th November, 2015, was attended by more than 240 alumni. This is an opportunity for our ex-Marians to renew their ties with the school and with one another. Apart from their annual get-together, the alumni association of St. Mary's School (ICSE) continues to be a partner in Jesuit initiatives in the field of education of the under-privileged in various ways.

Some of the articles made by our students comprised painted pottery, table mats and charts of various festivals throughout the year. The boys were also given topics to enact skits through which they were able to display social awareness.

Our Annual SUPW camp at Khandala was truly a unique one, characterized by a spirit of service, eco-friendliness, discipline and teamwork. The boys visited the ‘National Association for the Blind’ institute, more well known as The Home for the Aging Blind. Residents of the building ranged from ages 40 to 90 years. The boys interacted with the residents and had an enriching insight into their lives. They were sensitized to the fact that in spite of their shortcoming they were able to live an independent and useful life. The boys also generously donated biscuits and ration to the residents there. interact club report - std.- 9The Interact Club for the academic year 2014-2015 began in the month of June with twenty-eight students on the roll. Our club meetings were held every Friday after school. Throughout the year, the Interactors prepared and displayed thought-provoking charts highlighting social and environmental issues, team spirit and communal harmony, the importance of various school activities, festivals and their place in society, concern for others and ways to interact with people. During the course of the year, our students were given inputs on personal grooming, tidiness and personality development. The students' participation in street plays and creative writing not only helped them to interact with each other as a team and develop their skills in drama but also enhanced their literary skills. The Interactors were briefed and asked to prepare an individual power-point presentation highlighting social evils faced particularly in India and their impact on society. The elements of these social evils were discussed and the team-mates shared their thoughts and views on the same. The 'Cookery Contest' was organized in which all the Interactors prepared mouth-watering nutritious salads and desserts. The students were also questioned about the nutritious value of their preparation and were graded accordingly. The Interactors went on a 'Cleanliness Drive' to Chowpatthy beach equipped with brooms and dustbins and were assigned group tasks to help clean the beach and further the cause of the 'Swaach Bharat Abhiyaan.' The Annual Interact Camp, this year, held at Khandala was truly a unique one. A spirit of eco-friendliness, service, discipline, team-work and culture awareness characterized the camp. The Interactors mingled with the inmates of the blind home at Lonavala where they were inspired and amazed by the sight of the blind working skilfully in producing various handicraft products which we tend to use in our homes on a daily basis. For our students, it was an insight into the life of a villager, which is a simple life. They have now come to realize that everyone needs a place under the sun. It was indeed an enriching and heart-warming experience for them. On the whole our students emerged an enriched lot with mutual sharing of ideas and positive interaction. It was a fruitful year that provided ample opportunities for our Interactors to develop their personality and grow as caring and responsible citizens. Congratulations to all the students. We wish them every success in all their future endeavours.

SUPW REPORT 2015-2016 std.- 9For the SUPW Group of 19 pupils, it was a year marked with variety, vigour and versatility.

In the First Term, the boys made topical charts and decorated earthen pots. In the Second Term besides the regular activities, the pupils decorated Diwali Deepaks and gifted them to all, spreading the spirit of festivity and harmony. The highlights of this Term's activity was the overnight camp at St. Mary's Villa, Khandala. There they participated in various activities promoting consumer awareness, nature trails and team building. The highlight of the camp was that each pupil participated in a Fashion Show using natural materials from the environment. This promoted the concept of 'Shedding their inhibitions'. In the Third Term, the pupils were guided in making newspaper bags thus promoting the eco-friendly virtue of 'Refuse’ (Plastic), Re-use and Re-cycle'. They also learnt to assemble edible ingredients and present a snack or a dessert without the use of fire as fuel. They loved this. On the whole it was an unforgettable year of varied experiences and pupils were more aware of their socio-economic relationship with people, places and products.

Photography Club (std.- 8 & 9) The academic year 2015- 2016 was one to reminisce for the sixty-eight students who registered themselves in the Photography Club. The students were aware that a photograph can capture a moment that can last forever but moreover it was necessary for them to know that once we start noticing details, we inevitably start to see how much beauty is all around us. We met regularly every Friday after school hours and discussed the different nuances of photography. The boys were given different assignments, where they were also provided with the required tips about good composition, basics of light and other useful techniques to improve their photography. We had two workshops conducted by CANON in the month of March, where Mr. Rajesh Kamat briefed our students on how one could use creative techniques while taking a photograph. A special contest was also held for the boys and the winners were congratulated for being at their creative best. A two-days photography camp was organized at Zara's Resort. Deep valleys, cool climate and the scenery blanketed in greenery helped our students click excellent photographs. Mr. Rajesh Kamat and Mr. Sunil Kamble from Canon conducted the workshop. Our students' creative outlets were soaring during the workshop. Every child

20

expressed his opinions and beliefs through the photograph he clicked. The workshop comprised the following sessions:Ÿ Different types of camerasŸ Functions of cameras (DSLRs, Point and shoot, Compact cameras)Ÿ Guidelines on composition Ÿ Landscape photographyŸ Macro-photography

Our students also helped in capturing special moments during Rang Bhare, Children's Day, Republic Day, School Exhibition and other important school events.

From o'er the waves and far away,From hills and plains with voices gay,They sing the school they love so well,Within whose walls they long to dwell,

And live the days of yore again,They long, alas, but long in vain.

CHORUS

Come boys let's sing the school we love,Our chorus rend the skies above

And let the mountains and the hillsProclaim the love that young hearts thrills.

St Mary's boys, St Mary's boys,Hurrah! We are St Mary's boys.

Our lives are bright and free of care. The burden's light that we must bear.

Through tasks that should our ire provoke,Through sun and rain and mist and smoke

St Mary's boys will smile and sing,Till with their songs the echoes ring.

CHORUS

St Mary's boys cling to their God,Through life's long day for Him they plod,

To God and country ever true,In peace and war their valour show,

Where'er the call of duty liesThey prove themselves St Mary's boys.

CHORUS

St. Mary's HIGH School Anthem

Jesuit Educational credo

The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) is an international group of about 25,000 men committed to the service of God and people in a variety of ways.

The Mumbai Jesuits work in greater Mumbai and Northern Maharashtra covering the districts of Thane, Raigad, Nasik, and Dhule.

They run schools, Colleges, boardings and technical institutions. They also organize the poor, shelter run-away kids and are committed to the religious and moral education of various groups. In Greater Mumbai they have the following schools:

1. Campion High School (Fort)2. St. Xavier's Night High school (Fort)3. St. Xavier's Boy's Academy (New Marine Lines)4. St. Mary's High School (I.S.C.E. Mazagaon)5. St. Stanislaus High School (Bandra)6. Holy Family High School (Andheri)7. St. Xavier's High School ( I.C.S.E.Bassein)

The Society of Jesus, a Christian Religious Order founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, has been active in the sphere of education throughout the world, ever since its foundation. In India, today, the Society of Jesus is responsible for the education of hundreds of young people belonging to every social class, community and religious group. Jesuit education is inspired by the vision of Man drawn from the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. It is also based on the principles of character formation elaborated by St. Ignatius of Loyola. It is this which gives Jesuit education its special character.
