Had the followers of Jesus or the teachers of the law or the Pharisees been asked if the lepers should be cleansed or healed, the answer would most likely have been, "No, they deserve their condition." The lepers would have been, perhaps, a mixed group, Galileans and Samaritans alike, the bond of their awful disease overcoming the pettiness of former religious bickering. Jesus' actions once again illustrate his vocation and ours: to reach out when healing is needed, to challenge when conversion is needed, to con- sole when comfort is needed. He also follows his own advice from last week's Gospel: do what you have been commanded to do. When the cleansed Samaritan has returned to give thanks, Jesus does not take it as an opportunity for self-aggrandizement, but rather offers insight into faith. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Ordinary Time THE WORD OF GOD UNCHAINED There is no chaining the word of God! But how many times do we attempt to do that very thing? Had the followers of Jesus or the teachers of the law or the Pharisees been asked if the lepers should be cleansed or healed, the answer would most likely have been, "No, they deserve their condition." The lepers would have been, perhaps, a mixed group, Galileans and Samaritans alike, the bond of their awful disease overcoming the pettiness of former religious bickering. Jesus' actions once again illustrate his vocation and ours: to reach out when healing is needed, to challenge when conversion is needed, to con-sole when comfort is needed. He also follows his own advice from last week's Gospel: do what you have been commanded to do. When the cleansed Samaritan has returned to give thanks, Jesus does not take it as an opportunity for self-aggrandizement, but rather offers insight into faith. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Pelagia, more often called Margaret, on ac-count of the magnificence of the pearls for which she had so often sold herself, was an actress of Antioch, equally celebrated for her beauty, her wealth and the disorder ofher life. During a synod at Antioch, she passed Bishop St. Nonnus of Edessa, who was struck with her beauty; the next day she went to hear him preach and was so moved by his sermon that she asked him to baptize her which he did. She gave her wealth to Nonnus to aid the poor and left Antioch dressed in men's clothing. She be-came a hermitess in a cave on Mount of Olivette in Jerusalem, where she lived in great austerity, performing penances and known as "the beardless monk" until her sex was discov-ered at her death. Though a young girl of fif-teen did exist and suffer martyrdom at Antioch in the fourth century, the story here-told is a pious fiction, which gave rise to a whole set of similar stories under different names. Her feast day was October 8th.
