EditorialThis is the second of the St. Mary’s ‘catch-up’ Annuals where we are trying to completethe record of recent years in the school. Producing this double edition after such apassage of time and after several other annuals gives the editorial team an unnervingsense of time-travel. We have had our fellow travellers who have come whole heartedlyon this journey with us. Raiders of the Lost Archives include the Administrative andTeaching staff of both Junior and Senior Schools, parents and numerous students, without whose assistance this publication would be a much slimmer and less detailedpicture of the years in question. Our most heartfelt thanks go to all who have helpedwith this Annual.

Two years in a College‘s life mean momentous events. They brought the tragic loss of astudent; Rory Moore and a great friend to St. Mary’s; Dr. Brendan Deasy. May they restin peace. Rory was a student who will always be remembered for his ready smile andwit: though he was only in St. Mary’s for a short time, he made a big impact on hispeers and is greatly missed. Generations of students learned, all they needed to know, about the Birds and the Bees from Dr. Deasy. He always had well disciplined classesbecause the threat of being used as a model, if you spoke out of turn, was a verypowerful one.

Mr. John Gillespie and Mr. Noel Doyle retired from the Senior School and Ms. FrancisBane from the Junior School. One member of the editorial team has very fond memoriesof Mr. Doyle letting him away with a very inaccurate answer, in a table quiz, and manynights spent cutting out the contours of the vale of Glendalough. He also remembersthe figures of speech learned at the hands of Mr. Gillespie and knows his onomatopoeiafrom his hyperbole. There are many, many students, both past and present, who owe allof their three Rs to Ms. Bane.

New arrivals to the Staff of the Junior School included Garreth Agnew, Judith Keane,Fiona Murray, Greg Owen, Ray Sloan and Ruth Smith along with Rachel Donnellan,Ruairí Gallogly, Ronan Kelly, Katherine Madden, Rodney O’Donnell and Gordon Smythin the Senior School.

Huge changes occurred in the shape of the implementation of the Education Act withthe establishment of a Board of Management for each of the two schools; the electionof staff and parent representatives to these two Boards and the establishment of theParents’ Association. This marked the biggest change in School governance, for theprivate schools, since their foundation.

The newly established Parents’ Association made an immediate impact through fund-raising to mark out the yard area for a wide range of sports activities. A very welcomeaddition to the school.

Other foundations were celebrated with the Golden Jubilee of the College Chapel. Thechapel is a remarkable place with a very rich history and vibrant decoration. At the riskof too many anecdotes, the Editor’s memories include: singing plain chant, fixing theelectric organ and serving at the morning Mass, for many a year. Students from St.Mary’s and Templeogue College continued the missionary vision of the chapel byvisiting Ghana in these years.

On more mundane matters, keen readers will be interested to note that a sports day wasrained off with much disappointment in the Summer of 2006, (though it wasrescheduled twice), the rugby performances were strong, but with no cup wins and thesport of Basketball continued to grow in popularity. The Senior School was givensubject inspections twice and both the Science and English Departments came out ofthe inspections very well.

In a note on accuracy, the Scout photos from the 7th troop which appeared in the 2007Annual should have been included here. Keen observers will see Swiss chalets appearingin a location captioned, Belgium. Such mistakes will happen but it is down to our eagle-eyed team of proof readers that they don’t happen more.

So, here we have two busy years for you to reminisce over and the history of St. Mary’sCollege is somewhat more complete.

(Apoc XXII. 16).

The upper right bears the Cross, the emblem of trials and difficulties. It is ingold on a silver ground, symbolic of the precious outcome of trials well borne. These two symbols combine to produce the College motto: “Fidelitas in Arduis”(Fidelity in Difficulties).

On the upper left quarter there is the Dove in silver, symbolic of the Holy Ghost, from which descend seven golden rays, the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, essential in the practice of “Fidelitas in Arduis”.

The left base bears a red heart transfixed with a sword and encircled with goldenroses. This is symbolic of the Holy Heart of Mary, suffering - the supreme purelyhuman type of “Fidelitas in Arduis”. The golden roses symbolise the reward thatcomes from such fidelity.

Brendan Deasy’s going from among ushas been so sudden. While we pray forBrendan’s eternal happiness, wecelebrate too his great life; all that hewas to his family and friends. And wegive eucharistic thanks for his many actsof kindness and of love.

He was a great family-man first andforemost; a loving husband to Martine, ina marriage blessed by God, over decades. He was a loving parent to Jean-Baptiste,Celine and Olivier. He was a lovingGrandad to Hannah, Orla and Nicole; afond brother of Paddy, Mary and Denis. We grieve with them.

He was, too, a busy, respected and lovedfamily doctor. He was also a pioneer inoccupational medicine. For years, he wasthe school doctor, and more, in St.Mary’s College, as well as being acounsellor in many other schools. Hetalked to the pupils about growing intomature adults; about resisting addictionin many forms.

He rejoiced with good humour in theirnickname for him – “half-pint Deasy”.This had nothing to do with Brendan’sphysique, but everything to do withalcohol moderation. Past students wouldring him up, years later, from the furthestcountries of the earth, and nothing gavehim greater pleasure than to continue tohelp “his boys and girls”.

He was not only doctor to the Leinsterbranch of the IRFU, but coach to ageneration of under 12 rugby and cricketplayers in St. Mary’s. He initiated the now

annual rugbyvisit to Wales. He travelled with them andenjoyed thecompany ofpupils andparents alike. His belief in the formative value of schoolprompted his voluntary coaching workfor young sportsmen over many yearsand he followed their subsequent careerswith great interest.

He was quietly a very committed CatholicChristian. His weekly visit to St. Mary’salways began with morning Mass in thechapel. He saw Christian living as achallenging response to the gift of faith. He was a member of the Lourdes ShrineInternational Medical Commission. Ibelieve that from his days in Gormanston,he inherited some of the true Franciscanspirit.

He was friend to thousands. In particular,Brendan was friend and adviser to manypriests, especially of the Holy GhostOrder. And those same priests who havegone before him, like his great friendJerome Godfrey CSSp, (not to mentionhis many appreciative patients) will havea wonderful welcome for him.

If God’s help is nearer to us than thedoor, and if “only God thinks of a dyingsparrow in the middle of a war” (PatrickKavanagh), then not a single prayer goesunheard. So, in prayer, it is into Christ’shands that we commend Brendan’sgenerous loving spirit.

6 ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2005

STAFF RETIREMENTSThree long-serving staff members retired in 2005.

Their hard work and dedication to the school over the years is very much appreciated.

I first met Noel Doyle when I visited St Mary’s to meet the staff in April 1997; just after my appointment, as the new principal, wasannounced. The staff was considering a Codefor Positive Behaviour and, at lunch, I satbeside St. Mary’s heavyweights: Noel Doyle,Jim Kirby, Terry Newell and Peter Quinn.Needless to say, I was very nervous but Noel, asis his wont, was gracious and supportive. Isuppose he considered me to be sound, on thenational question, when he realised I was a pastpupil of St Vincent’s, Glasnevin, just as he was.I remember joking with him about the irony oftwo Christian Brother boys being in seniorleadership positions in the best, if not theoldest, Holy Ghost school. I have so manyreasons to be grateful to Noel for his support, his common sense, his advice, his insights intostaff and students – honed during a lifetime ofservice to the school as teacher, year head anddeputy principal.

The annual trip to the Burren, which Noel organised, remains a highlight in the memoryof every Mary’s pupil. His proprietorial hold over the Geography Room was legendary.Even after he stopped teaching the subject, and until his retirement as deputy head –only then was it converted into the present Library. Never were maps, slides and globesmore jealously guarded. Noel’s other subject was Irish. When he was appointed deputyprincipal he missed the classroom. It was on his advice that I took a Leaving Certificateclass in Irish at ordinary level. Noel promoted practical Christianity. One of my fondestLiturgical memories in St Mary’s is of a Mass, organised by Noel as part of the TransitionYear Religious Education Programme, held in a classroom on the ground floor. God wasnear us that day! His practical Christianity and social outreach were further illustratedby his work with the College’s Conference of St Vincent de Paul; the quiet work of thestudents in Fatima Mansions, and with the Women’s Refuge, under his guidance, wasinspirational. All the more so because it was understated and low key. Barry Leonardcontinues Noel’s work with the Conference but even Barry must admit that nobodycould run the Annual Cake Sale as efficiently as Noel. Students came and went, to theJunior School Hall, with the tactical awareness and precision of a Napoleonic general.

The role of deputy principal in St. Mary’s has a major disciplinary aspect. If I’m honest,I’d have to admit that many of the students found me too approachable. From time totime Noel would have to lift a student out of it, in his own inimitable fashion. Thestudents knew that Noel’s bark was worse than his bite but his comment of “Are you

telling me that I didn’t see what I saw?” must rank as one of the greatest leadingquestions of all time. Yet, there was no better man to fight the student’s corner, if theneed arose. The affection with which he’s greeted at past pupil functions is testamentto his sense of professionalism and fair play.

Noel was great for setting up pilot projects and one of his last ones was the GreenSchools initiative, promoting a re-use and recycle agenda in the College (ahead of itstime). Noel coached rugby for many years, many players benefiting from his time andexpertise. He delighted in the success of the cup teams but espoused a doctrine ofparticipation and enjoyment (rather than the pursuit of success), maintaining that thetwo approaches were not mutually exclusive. There is so much more I could say, on apersonal and professional level, in tribute to Noel and his time in St. Mary’s, but sufficeit to say that, he will be missed.

John Gillespie sat on the far side of thestaffroom from 7.20 each morning, where hecould correct his copies while commanding a full view of what was going on. AToastmasters’ champion: his witty, andoccasionally barbed remarks, enlivened many awinter’s morning; after a particularly successfulthrust he would retreat behind his red pen andaffect a faintly injured innocence that theworld had come to such a place as he was nowforced to endure.

At breaktime, he would gravitate towards thebiscuit tray and political conversation, andwhile he was never allowed live down hisalleged 1980’s support for the then leadershipof Fianna Fáil, it didn’t prevent him frombringing his deep knowledge of political andhistorical matters into the arena.

He taught History and English with the passionof a man who loves books. To this day Johnoccasionally appears in my office, or home,

hungrily scouting the shelves for new things to read. His reading of twentieth centuryhistorical biography remains as up-to-date as any person alive, while his classroomcopy of F S L Lyons’ “Ireland Since the Famine” fell to pieces with use: he knew itvirtually paragraph by paragraph.

John’s pedagogical approach was traditional. When I first came to St. Mary’s, Iwas pleasantly surprised to meet students who could spell, paragraph and punctuate, not realising John’s 1st Year English spelling and grammar tests were a rite of passageinto the Senior School. His tests, essays, reading aloud, written homework, and rashesof red biro corrections went in and out of fashion over the years, with John sailingon regardless, secure in his knowledge of what constituted sound practice.

In the staffroom he loved to adopt the persona of the grumpy old disciplinarian. Hisown classroom reflected a different reality; always respectful but relaxed, formal butgood humoured. I never knew him to use even the mildest sanctions. A lift of aneyebrow, or a look over the glasses, was enough for Mr. Gillespie to establish order.

Warmly remembered by Denis Murphy

Page 9: ST. MARY’S COLLEGE C.S.Sp. · 2018. 8. 9. · St. Mary’s College, Trinidad 110 Junior School Staff, Board of Management 114 Junior School Roll 2004-2005 116 Junior School Class

8 ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2005

As a colleague, he was particularly good to young teachers, making them feelwelcome and reaching out with a friendship that was never forgotten.

It’s not possible to be such a fine teacher without also loving life. John lives forculture and for people. The diary beside his telephone (a landline, of course – he’snever taken to the mobile communications revolution) is a celebrated sight, bookedup, for weeks in advance, with lunches and dinners and plays and concerts andoperas. Woe betide the person who cancels at the last minute; a silent but chilly windcomes down the telephone line. And friends ensure that he is not allowed to do thedriving: you have not experienced true fear until you have been through an M50roundabout with John Gillespie. These provisos excepted, a night out with John isalways a joy: well planned, full of wit and erudition, and good food and conversation.

In a short space of time, a retired teacher becomes unknown by the current generationof students. But the school in which the boys live, the way things are done, the traitsthat define us – these things are the sum of what has gone before. So while we missJohn terribly in the staffroom, with hardly a day going by without someone saying, ‘Iwonder what Gillespie would make of such-and-such?’, it’s a consolation and aninspiration to know that while we no longer see him every day, his definingqualities – Gentleman, Teacher, Scholar – are part of the personality of the place thathe served so well.

Mrs. Bane (or Ms. McLoughlin as Frances wasknown in her early St. Mary’s career) came toSt. Mary’s in 1976 as the Learning Supportteacher. I met Frances when I started in theJunior School, two years later, and I amprivileged to call her and Liam very close friends.

In her teaching role, Frances excelled as anatural care giver; in building an easy rapportwith her students; building confidence andsending the boys back to class all the better forher influence. Her gentle, easy manner andputting of others before herself was, and still is,the only way Frances knows. I feel she passedthis on in some way, not only to her chargesbut to those who were lucky enough to haveher as a colleague.

In our Junior School, we put great emphasis onproviding a holistic education. We want theboys to develop their potential both on and off

the rugby field. Frances, as an educator, was an expert and believed that education goes beyond the “three R’s”. Her empathy with each child went beyond ability orpersonality; she was always able to see the uniqueness of the individual and everyoneloved her for it.

It is a pleasure to honour Frances in this Annual and I wish Liam and herself a long, happy and fun-filled retirement.

To finish, a fitting tribute to Frances is a quote from numerous parents, “what a lady!”

TRIP TO GERMANYThere were 18 students who went toCologne, Germany for a cultural

experience. The teachers whoaccompanied us on the trip were Ms.Deirdre Roche, Ms Tanya Tynan and MrJohn Nisbet. We tried to fit a lot ofactivities into the three days in Cologne. On the first day we went to The DOMand got a tour of the building andwalked up the 509 steps to the top. The second day we went to the Lindtchocolate factory and got a guided tourof the factory which was veryinteresting and informative. The last daywas the day we were all waiting for: theday we were going to the amusementPark, Phantasialand. The theme parkwas in Brühl which is a short trainjourney away. The theme park was veryenjoyable and fun was had by all. The4th year trip to Cologne, Germany was a really great experience and thememories will never be forgotten.

From sailingto within inches of large intimidatingseals to sailing to within inches of theeven more intimidating and fast-moving Stena Line, the mood wasalways one of pure joy. The college andthe INSS must be given credit for howwell organised the sessions were. KARATE The Karate in fourth year was a greatexperience. We had it every Wednesdaymorning with Mr. Dunne in the FatherBarry Hall. This was something new foreverybody in the class and by the endof the term we knew all about it! Mr.Dunne ensured we toughened up andgot fitter. The class was demanding, tosay the least, on a Wednesday morning, first thing, but it made a great start tothe day. As a result of all the work weput in, everyone got a belt, eitheryellow or orange, during the testing.Mr. Dunne was a great teacher and wewould like to thank him.

On Sunday 24th April 2005, a JubileeMass was celebrated to mark the 50thanniversary of the opening of the CollegeChapel. Staff, pupils, past pupils andparents were among those who joinedwith members of the CSSp Community at a concelebrated Mass and, afterwards, enjoyed a commemorative gathering inthe College. Fr. Patrick Palmer CSSp(Provincial) was the principalconcelebrant and Fr. James Hurley CSSp,former President and Principal here, preached the homily. The sacred musicfor the Mass was sung by the CelticChoristers led by, their conductor, EthelGlancy.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE COLLEGE CHAPELFollowing the re-opening of the Collegein 1926, it quickly became obvious thatthe old Oratory (now rooms in the priests’residence) was neither worthy of thegrowing College, nor large enough toaccommodate the student bodyadequately. However, because of financialreasons and a world war, it was notpossible to build a fitting chapel formany years.

Eventually, in 1951 Fr. Joseph GilmoreCSSp (President) and his communitydecided to proceed with the building ofthe new Church – and endeavoured tocombine features of tradition andsimplicity in the design. Planning wasunder the guidance of the College bursar,Dr. Michael Kennedy CSSp, who hadalready built the beautiful KimmageManor Church. Our Chapel was built byW. & J. Bolger Ltd., and the architectswere Robinson, Keeffe and Devane.Externally the building comprised rusticbrick, white granite and blue slate with asixty foot high bell tower – which issuitably shown off by the stretch ofgreen in front of the College. Internallyit comprises a rectangular nave, with acircular apsidal end containing the HighAltar, and an Organ Loft.

The foundation stone was laid on 3rd July1953. The first Mass was offered in thenew Chapel on Easter Sunday, 10th April1955. Archbishop McQuaid blessed theChapel on 16th January 1957.

The new Church was dedicated to theImmaculate Heart of Mary, Refuge of

Sinners – which, coincidentally, is alsothe titular dedication of the beautifulRathmines Parish Church. (It was to theImmaculate Heart of Mary that Fr.Libermann had dedicated his MissionarySociety. It remains the co-title of theCongregation of the Holy Ghost).

THE APSE MOSAIC When the Chapel was built it wasdedicated to Our Lady. About this timePope Pius XII proclaimed Our Lady Queenof the Universe and so, when the Apsemosaic was installed in 1959, it wasunder this title that Mary was depicted. It is made from Venetian vitreous glassand brilliant gold mosaic.

Mary sits on golden clouds, with asceptre in one hand and the sphere of theworld in the other. She is a crownedQueen and is seated beside our Lord (whoholds in his hands a book with Alpha andOmega – the beginning and the end –written on it ).

Arranged underneath are the figures of St Michael the Archangel – leaning on his shield;St John the Baptist – on one knee, andwith a tiny banner of the Cross;St Peter – with keys and a book; andSt. Paul – holding his sword.

There are also Aisle Mosaics which(beginning from the back of the Chapel)show three sacrifices of the Old Law,often mentioned in the Mass – Abel(depicted as a lamb), Abraham (Isaac) andMelchisidech (bread and wine).

Few colleges have such a Chapel or oneso beautifully adorned. It is a gift andprivilege to generations of students.

The details contained in this articleare based on material contained inthe 1958 College Annual.

ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2005 71

Many of you will be aware that the twoScout Associations in Ireland joinedforces on 1 January 2004 to becomeScouting Ireland. The St. Mary’s groupretained the name 6th/7th/8th St. Mary’sCollege and we are now part of theDublinia Scout County. St. Mary’swould be one of the biggest groups inthe Dublinia Scout County. Recentyears have shown a steady growth inour membership. St. Mary’s currentlyhave one Cub pack with 36 members, made up of boys in, 4th and 5th class, inthe Junior School. Max Smyth and ateam of 5 leaders run the Cub pack. Wehave two Scout troops, the 6th and 7th

Scout troops, with 55 members fromboys in 6th class to 4th year. DanielCarvill runs the 6th Troop while GavinFogarty runs the 7th Troop. The 8thtroop is currently on ice, until we havesufficient numbers to open a thirdsection. We had no Venturer group this year but we hope to reopen theVenturer group in September. All of our male leaders are past pupils of the College and past Scout members. All our female leaders are pastVenturers. Without their hard work and dedication scouting would not be what it is in St. Mary’s – a uniqueexperience.

6TH SCOUT TROOP SUMMER CAMP,MERKENVELD CAMPSITE, BELGIUM

The campsite of Merkenveld, in northernBelgium, was the destination of choicefor the first solo summer camp of the 6thScout Troop in over ten years. Threepatrols, led by William Parkinson, JamesMullen and David Keane braved trains, planes and automobiles to reach the sitethat would be home for two, gloriouslysunny, weeks at the end of June. Acampsite, to confound all sceptics ofscouting abilities, was constructed overthe first day and a bit, followed bycuisine to make a 5 star chef’s mouthwater. From early morning to late, late atnight the Troop made the most of everysituation.

On the occasions when the PL’s believedthe local population could handle aninvasion of Irish scouts, we visited thepicturesque town of Bruges; with itscanals and ancient churches, not tomention the obligatory McD’s visit, therewas something for everyone. To assuagethe kid in both scouts and leaders we alsomade a trip to the nearby amusementpark, 6 Flags. Nerves and adrenaline werepushed to the max, until we could takeno more, and we returned victorious withour spoils of war, aka sweets and stuffedteddies. When the Troop returned toDublin airport the PL’s were satisfied theyhad passed on all they had learned andthat next year’s Patrol Leaders would

continue the 6th’s tradition of “fun andadventure in the outdoors”.

CEDERBERG ADVENTURE, SOUTH AFRICA, 3RD-26TH DEC. 2004

In August of 2004 a former scout leaderin St. Mary’s College, Jerry Kelly, contacted one of the current leaders andasked if the 4th year scouts would beinterested in taking part in the CederbergAdventure, a hiking event that takes placein South Africa every two years. After amoment of stunned silence, came aresounding yes. Jerry Kelly, through histime as Chief Scout of the World, developed strong contacts in SouthAfrica, and through these friends camethe invitation to take part in the 2004Cederberg Adventure.

Informing the scouts & parents was thenext step. Most of the parents thoughtwe were having them on. Finally, after ameeting in the Scout Den with GroupLeader, Karl McBrien, Jerry Kelly and theleaders of the 7th and 6th Troops, GavinFogarty and Dan Carvill, the parentsrealised we were serious.

The following three months went by in aflurry of fund raising, hiking, injections, talks on South Africa, decisions onactivities pre and post Adventure as wellas an absolute avalanche of e-mails toand from South Africa.

With trepidation Colm Quinn, WilliamParkinson, Shane Timmons, BrendanShortt, David Keane, Richard Shaffrey,James Mullen (all 6th Scout Troop), KarlMcBrien (Group Leader), Gavin Fogarty(7th Troop Leader) and Dan Carvill (6thTroop Leader) stepped on board a directflight to Cape Town with the assurancesof the South African Scout Associationthat everything would be fine. They werenot wrong. From the moment we got offthe plane we were helped out in everypossible way. The leaders and scouts wemet along the way bent over backwardsto help us. From lifts to and from theairport, to a guided hike up and downTable Mountain, to advice on theupcoming event.

With plenty of time before the eventstarted, the patrol was taken on a trip toKhayelitsha Township. This was asobering experience for us all, havingwitnessed first hand the abject conditionsthe people were living in. There was asmall glimmer of hope in that the localgovernment were actively trying toimprove the situation. The following daywe travelled around the Cape peninsulafirst visiting Boulders Bay in Simonstown,Cape Point where we had a closeencounter with a baboon and then on toHout Bay for lunch of the freshest fishimaginable. Robben Island and theDistrict Six museum were next on thecards for the patrol, ending it all withpizzas in a restaurant around the cornerfrom the Sea Scout base we were stayingat, before the Adventure.

The Cederberg Adventure started with awelcoming ceremony for all 500 scoutsand 100+ leaders in the blazingafternoon sun and the sun didn’t stopthere. For the entire event we basked intemperatures ranging from a balmy 35 toa slightly uncomfortable 44 Celsius. Westarted our hiking, on the side of theroad, deep in the Cederberg National Parkwith a map, food for two days and ourwits. The scouting skills they guys hadpicked up, over the previous 4 years, wereput to the test at every juncture of theevent – from the cooking of the “food”to deciphering the routes; through themost barren landscape, to deciding onthe best place to sit out the mid day sun.

At the end of each day’s hiking we wererewarded with a base to sleep at and anactivity to take part in. Killing a chickenfor dinner, panning for gold, paragliding, dutch oven cooking, tie dyeing, astronomy and archery, were just a few ofthe activities we took part in. At eachbase we met up with other patrols fromSouth Africa, Ghana and Namibia. Friendswere made, songs were sung and fun washad at every base throughout theAdventure.

At the end of it all the scouts of 6/7/8thSt. Mary’s College C.S.Sp. had establisheda name that would pave the way forfuture patrols to uphold.

On St. Stephen’s Day the scouts andleaders returned to Dublin, laden withgifts for family, fantastic tales andmemories.

Senior Cup Team Report2004-2005

Pre-season Our journey began at the end of 5th

year with an immensely successfulrugby trip to Italy. There were somehugely memorable moments on thistrip, both on and off the pitch. We hadthree good wins, the pinnacle of whichwas a triumph over a rowdy Englishteam. Also, two good wins againstItalian sides whose defence left a lot tobe desired. The curse of the captain issaid to have afflicted our travellingparty, with myself and Robert Gannonpicking up injuries. Off the pitch, therewas a small altercation at our hotelwith some Italian “pups” as Mr Denis

Murphy politely referred to them. Ofcourse, our big red wing, Darragh “TheFange” Fanning was at the centre ofthe fracas. Ronan Good got to fulfil hisCable Guy fascinations when oneevening we attended a medieval timesbanquet. Also Kieran Traynor, KevQuinn and Rich Sweeney deservehonourable mentions as they capturedevery magic moment on camera! A lotof hard work then went into clipping aDVD which was presented to eachmember of the squad. Thanks lads.

In-Season After a summer of hard work, the startof our season couldn’t have gotten offto a better start with a super winagainst ‘Rock. Our momentumcontinued until we suffered a narrow

loss to St. Michael’s, just beforeChristmas. It was this form that led usto be considered as one of thefavourites for the cup. Everyone agreedthat one of the best results of ourseason was an away win, down inRockwell. There were a number ofplayers out injured and others playingrepresentative rugby but the depth ofour squad shone through for a greatwin. Conor Hogan, Alan Dalton andStephen Hannigan led the way. BrianMoran finished as the season’s top tryscorer. (I like to remind Brian that if itwasn’t for the rest of his pack, doing allthe pushing in the mauls, he mightn’thave been so fortunate). Paddy Morris,a better 2nd row partner would be hardto come by, and Shane O’Connelldeserve a lot of the credit for Brian’sglory, as does our scrum half, MattyConway, who was always on hand to

marshal his pack. Unfortunately MarkSexton suffered a bad break of his legduring the season which kept him outof rugby for the rest of the year.

SENIOR CUP GAMES

St. Marys v CBC Monkstown 20-0This match was always going to betougher than it looked, at first glance, and so it proved to be. Cowhey had agood game with the boot, which keptthe scoreboard ticking over. Aboud andmyself got over for tries. After the

match it was a case of job done, moveon. Unfortunately for us though,Robbie Hudson injured the ligaments inhis knee during the match and wasruled out for the rest of the cupcampaign. This proved to be a big lossfor the team.

St. Marys v Roscrea 32-10What a start! Barry got over from atraining ground move, off a lineout (allcredit goes to Bres of course!). We wenton to put a few more tries on the scoreboard, and won out well. One of thehighlights of the match was RichieKilkoyne smashing his opposite winger. After the game pundits said we wereone dimensional, but that match wasplayed in what were some of the worstconditions I’ve ever played in. A lot ofit was played in close quarters, with noother way to play the conditions, andwe handled them the better.

St. Marys v Belvedere 12-17What can I say about this match? I canmake no excuses; we came up against aseriously good team who had the betterof us on the day (a team which we beatduring the season). Belvo rode their luckand took their chances when theymaterialised. We went behind early butcame back to within a score, when MarcAboud got over the line, with fiveminutes to go, in the first half. Thismarked a fine cup campaign for Marc.Regrettably we let Belvo in for anotherscore before half time. As was always theway, we never gave up and fought foreach other right until the end, at whichpoint we did get in for another try. However it was just a little bit too late inthe day. Rod’s lucky boxers didn’t quiteget us over the line on this one.

Although this was an extremelydisappointing day for the whole squad,

when I look back at the season, as awhole, there were some hugely specialand memorable moments which even,to this day, some of the lads talk about. All this could not have been possiblewithout the help of our backroom teamof coaches, managers and all theparents, who came along and supportedus throughout the year. A big thank youto John Wynne, David Dunne, CliveByrne, Kieran O’Donnell and, of course,Rodney O’Donnell and David Breslin forall the hours they put in, that gounseen. All the hard work throughoutthe year was much appreciated. I’d alsolike to take this opportunity to thankthe entire squad for their unwaveringcommitment throughout the year andto my vice captain, Robert Gannon, forall his help. It was a pleasure and aprivilege to captain such a great bunchof lads.

Junior Cup Team Report2004-2005

The 2004/2005 season was an excitingyear for Junior Cup rugby in St.Mary’s, as it saw the U13 cup winnersfrom the 2003 season, progress to thesemi final stage of the competition.

The pre-season saw great victoriesagainst big schools in Leinster and alsoschools in Munster and Belfast. Thevictories included wins over Terenure,Blackrock, Belvedere and ClongowesWood. This junior cup side was one ofthe biggest packs ever seen, at thislevel, in St. Mary’s, and also in thecompetition. We were coached by Mr.Brian Moore and Mr. Anthony Leahy – resulting in an inspiring combinationof Leinster flair with Munster passion.

The captain and vice-captain werechosen as Mark Conway and StephenCulligan. Nearing Cup time, there wasalso extra excitement with the newsthat this year, for the first time,School’s Rugby would be televised bySetanta Sports. (This resulted in JackMcGrath trying out a number ofdifferent hair cuts in the weeks leadingup to the first match).

Our first tie was against St. Pat’s ofNavan, which posed a serious threat asthey possessed a huge pack and also aspeedy back line. The coaches had usbelieve that they were as good as anyteam in the competition, which keptour attention firmly on the job ahead. The venue was Lakelands and asalways St. Mary’s enjoyed greatsupport. I was fortunate enough toscore the opening try (having bashed

my way through what seemed like theentire St. Pat’s pack). Other trys wereadded by Colin Franklin, Ian O’Neilland the powerful Richard Bent.

Two weeks later, the quarter final wasagainst Clongowes Wood which wouldbe a massive battle. St. Mary’s startedwithout winger Ray Crotty due toinjury – and the popular question onthe day was if Ray would be alright toplay at all? The match proved to bethe expected tough encounter withJack McGrath, Richie Bent and DavidMcGann leading at the front. Thematch was nearing the end, with a certain draw at 3-3 when, thesubstitute, Ray Crotty saw a gap in the Clongowes defence and scored abrilliant try. The match ended 10-3with St. Mary’s progressing into thesemi-finals.

The semi final was a typical derby ofMary’s and Terenure, and was alwaysgoing to be a close match. ThisTerenure side filled the Donnybrookpitch with physical aggression and, equally, the St. Mary’s team faced upto everything that was thrown at them.A Gareth Redmond penalty put Mary’sin the lead, 3-0, but just after halftime Terenure used their pack to maulover the line placing the score at 5-3.And there it stayed for the rest of thehugely tight and physical game. Thiswas a really disappointing end to therugby year for us.

We would like to thank Mr. Moore andMr. Leahy for all the hard work anddedication they showed throughout theyear and to all the supporters andparents who helped the players before, during and after the rugby season.

Under 13s Report2004-2005This year’s Under Thirteen teams werecoached by Mr. Richie Hughes, helpedby two past pupils, Tony Gallagher andGavin Cullen. This was a very able andcommitted group, with many peoplerepresenting St. Mary’s for the firsttime. Throughout the training regimewas an emphasis on fitness – whichmany of us had never experiencedbefore. We were the better for it, as itallowed us to play a wide expansiverunning game, which by the end of theseason resulted in a total score of

around 120 tries. Our wingers, HarryNorton and David O’Halloran, scoredover 20 tries each.

During the friendly games, we hadsome very impressive performances.Against Terenure away we came from0-17 down to win 40-17! Other goodaway performances were againstClongowes, Pres. Cork, Castleknock andothers. Harry Norton scored six triesaway to Roscrea. We drew 29-29 withSt. Michael’s and lost to Willow Parkby a few points.

By cup-time the panel was strong, witha lot of thanks due to replacements in

various games. Playing at home, webeat Rockwell heavily and then wenton to beat St. Michael’s, due to greatdefence. We lost to Willow Park, unluckily, with a late try. In the semi-final we faced St. Michael’s again, butit was a different story thistime. Unfortunately, we lost thisgame – a sad end to a great season.

Our forwards were well served byShane Kearney, Ed. Mahon, CiaranO’Reilly, Domhnaill Drumm, ConorBurke, Liam Curran, Mark Fallon,Conor Sweeney and Killian Barnwell.Backs who played regularly throughoutthe season included David Fanagan,Killian Grumley Traynor, MauriceWalsh, Eoin Moriarty, Harry Norton,David O’Halloran and Eoin Mulcahy.

It cannot be stressed enough that allother members of the panelcontributed to forming a very strongteam.

Our other Under 13 teams enjoyedconsistent success throughout theseason also, and many will knowsuccess at JCT and Senior level in thefuture.

Thanks again to everyone involved in agreat season for all in this age-group.Particular tribute must go to ourcoaches (Mr. Hughes, Tony, Gavin) andto our Manager Fr. McNulty, whoorganised everything and ensured thatmaximum participation, for all, wasachieved.

St. Mary’s College RFC 2004-2005- Extract from Report included in St. Mary’s College PPU Newsletter –

Senior RugbyThe Senior XV finished second in theAIB All-Ireland League Division Two,and the Club was promoted to DivisionOne for next season. This was amagnificent achievement by a youngsquad of players and their coachingand management team. Congratulationsto Steven Hennessy, Peter Smyth, BrianRoantree, Peter Horgan, Brian Grimsonand all involved. St. Mary’s who, previously, had been the only Leinsterclub never to have been outsideDivision 1, had returned in just 364days. The year had a promising start, with the winning of the Navan HighKings Tournament. A real gloss was puton the season with the winning of theLeddin Finance Leinster League Cup,formerly the Leinster Senior Cup, forthe ninth time and the first time in tenyears. Incidentally, the trophy was the100th Leinster Branch trophy to bewon by St. Mary’s.

For the third season in a row we lostour Captain early in the season. DavidClare, incurred a serious ankle injury inOctober and was unable to play formuch of the season. Paul Nash, arecent St. Mary’s College SCT star andgraduate, deputised ably for much ofthe season.

The Club would like to record it’sappreciation for the sporting gesturemade by University College Cork inagreeing to postpone our AIL fixturewhen it became clear, on the day of thematch, and after UCC had arrived atTempleville Road, that most of the St.

Mary’s team were suffering from severegastroenteritis.

Junior RugbyThe J1s had a disappointing season. They made the semi-final of the J1League, but lost in the quarter-final ofthe Collie Smith trophy, a newcompetition for all junior teams inLeinster. Other teams performed withvarying degrees of success and therewere a good number of quarter andsemi-finals contested. Stars of JuniorRugby were the J6 Team who retainedthe Fox Cup beating Bective Rangers inthe final. Towards the end of theseason Kevin Potts, capped 31 times forLeinster, was appointed to the new

Victor Costello,Keith Gleeson, and Denis Hickie alsorepresented Ireland during the season.

Under 20sThis year’s Under 20 Team was ably

UNION SPORTS DAYThe day was, once again, a greatsuccess. Over 100 past pupilsand family membersattended – we had our usualmix of young and old withthe, ever present, 1979 teampitting themselves againstyears as recent as the present6th years. A total of 10 teamscompeted. This year it camedown to 1979 vs. 2003 (TheStormers) and 2000 vs. 6th years. The final was a tense affair withboth teams squandering their fair shareof chances – in the end, a sweetly struckhalf volley from Darragh Fanning, inextra time, gave the 6th years victory.

5TH ANNUAL UNION BUSINESS LUNCHThe 5th Annual Union Business Lunchwas held on Friday the 22nd of April. The Four Seasons Hotel represented achange in venue this year and it provedto be very popular, nearly 200 peoplewere in attendance. The Guest Speakerwas one of our very own, DavidO’Sullivan, the General Secretary of theEuropean Commission. David spokeextremely eloquently on the affairs ofthe European Union and, in particular,in relation to the Proposed Constitution.

David recalled very fond memoriesof his time in St Mary’s and, indeed, many of his fellowclassmates of 1971 werethere to support him.

THE ANNUAL UNION DINNEROur Annual Union Dinnertook place on the evening ofFriday the 12th of Novemberin the College Hall as is

The popularity of the quiz canbe largely attributed to the attractiveraffle prizes on offer. Sincere thanksmust go to all our contributors. Thequiz itself catered for ‘all sorts’ ofinterest with the emphasis on fun. Theoverall winners were a team from NewIreland Assurance, while the main raffleprize was won by Stephen Blake (2001)who brought his father Dick (1971)along to the Ireland v France game.

GRADUATION NIGHT– 26TH MAY 2005For the last number of years the Unionhas jointly hosted the CollegeGraduation night. The format for this isa sit down meal and presentation ofawards for all the graduating 6th yearstudents, along with their parents.Whilst the expense of such a night isconsiderable in terms of the Unionsfunds, it is nevertheless a worthwhile

exposure for the Union to both futuremembers and very importantly, for theinitial period of a young students life, a chance to put forward the aims andaspiration of the Union to the parents. This year’s graduation included 75 boyswho were leaving St. Mary’s. TheCaptain of the School, Brian Moranmade an interesting and well thoughtout speech. The notion of what St.Mary’s had done and provided for theboys was positively made and was wellreceived by his classmates. 106 ST. MARY’S COLLEGE ANNUAL 2005

On the 27th July, fifty players alongwith twelve coaches and mentors fromSt. Mary’s College and ColeraineAcademical Institution returned homeafter 14 games on 7 game days, 10flights, 28 days and 26,000 miles oftravel. It was a tour that took us fromthe tropical Cook Islands to a frostyNew Zealand to the watery winter sunof Australia.

Our rugby on tour will leave all of uswith fond memories, from theopposition we played, to the pitches, tothe history of the schools themselves. We donned our boots on fields whichranged from the Cook Islands NationalStadium (which lay impressivelysandwiched between volcanicmountains and coral reefs) to rainsoaked mud baths in New Zealand andthe concrete of Australia. We first faceda haka, one of many, while beinghosted at the remarkable, all Maori, TeAute School. While along the way weplayed some very talented players, which included Issy Dagg of

Lindisfarne, who has subsequentlyearned caps for the Highlanders in theSuper 14 and for the New ZealandSevens team.

We also played teams who have helpedgroom some of rugby’s greatest players, such as St. Edmunds in Canberra, whonot only schooled Matt Giteau,Australia’s current playmaker but alsoGeorge Gregan, the most cappedinternational ever. Coming away fromthe tour, as players I think the moststriking difference we came across wasthe physicality and intensity thesouthern Hemisphere teams brought tothe games, not to mention theirambitious style. This is something wehope we have learned from andbrought home with us.

While primarily a rugby tour, there wasplenty of down time for both coachesand players alike. Along the way wevisited Six Flags Theme Park in LosAngeles, which quickly sorted out thefearless from the fearful, the sulphur

Before such a tour can take place, ahuge amount of people had to worktogether to make it happen andtherefore a massive thanks must beextended to the parents and others whoorganised and contributed to both thefund raising and planning of the tour.A special mention must be made tothose who made the St. Mary’s Pride ofLions night a success and also to those

who produced and sponsored the TourBrochure. Without all of this supportthe tour would not have been possible.

On behalf of the players I would like tothank all the coaches and mentors whoorganised, billeted and supervised usthroughout the tour, it was greatlyappreciated by all of us and by ourparents at home. Finally I would like tothank St. Mary’s and CAI for providingall us young players with theopportunity to have all these greatexperiences. I hope the sameopportunities will present themselves tofuture St. Mary’s and CAI studentsalike, so that they too can representIreland to the highest standards bothon and off the pitch, while abroad.

EARLY DAYSIn the early days of the jointCongregation of the Holy Ghost and ofthe Immaculate Heart of Mary, veryinsistent letters came from the Catholicsof Trinidad to the Superior General, thesuccessor of Fr. Libermann, to providesome priests for a secondary college onthe island. Two such arrived in Trinidadin July 1863 (four years after a similargroup arrived in Ireland for the samepurpose).

Preparations were begun immediately forthe opening of the new College under thename the College of the ImmaculateConception (CIC). The College was to befor boarders and day-boys and openedon 1st August 1863 with 14 pupils. Theisland Governor, Robert W. Keate, wasvery opposed to a college “for Papistpupils and would prefer them to attendthe Collegiate (Anglican) school, wherethey would be sure to lose theirridiculous faith in time!”. When the newschool year began on 1st February 1864(the same year Rockwell College opened)there were 80 boys on the roll.

Difficulties arose with the new DominicanArchbishop of Trinidad; no parochialministry was to be undertaken etc., buthe gave them use of a defunct Collegebelonging to the diocese for a ten yearperiod. By1865 they acquired a nearbysite to which they moved in 1875, andthis is the one that is still used today.

Irish students for the priesthood andbrothers of the Congregation soonarrived and by 1870 English replacedFrench as the teaching language. Achapel was built and other buildingdevelopment took place.

DIFFICULTIESThe College was perpetually understaffedand personnel were overworked, rising at4.45 am and retiring at 10 pm. At timesthe College was almost like a hospital, since back in Paris it was believed thatTrinidad had a climate beneficial to TBpatients. Each decade from 1871, pupilnumbers rose from 67 to 137, to 167, to

213. The central administration of theHoly Ghost Order in Paris was neverenthusiastic about the foundation inTrinidad. Several times tentative effortswere made to close down the College, which proved very disturbing for thedifferent headmasters.

Discipline among the boys, especiallyamong the boarders, was a perennialproblem. As in England and elsewhere atthe time, corporal punishment was thecommon practice and this wasadministered unevenly. There wasinternal dissension too between the Irishand French priests : “the Irish do notunderstand the people and they are moreEnglish than the English themselves”, itwas reported to Paris. There was, as inIreland, intense competition forUniversity scholarships, not always to theadvantage of the Catholic college.

In 1894 an Irishman, Fr. NicholasBrennan, became headmaster, a mostfortuitous happening. He was moreindependent of Paris, demanded localadaptations of regulations and adopted afar less rigid approach. The IrishPrincipals who succeeded him brought St.Mary’s, as it was popularly known, to thepeak of success by the time the schoolcelebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1913. Infact, Dr. Edward Crehan CSSp, principalof St. Mary’s Rathmines (1900-1904)became the ninth Principal of CIC (1910-1920). “He set up the science laboratoriesand his kindliness is still legend.”

POST WORLD WAR IThis war had a great impact on CIC. Over200 past students were to fight with theAllies. The College became basically anIrish staffed school. The war broughtconsiderable economic hardship toTrinidad. There was a change in thestructure of society. Education became astatus symbol. The percentage of non-

white students increased greatly. Thesystem of education itself changed. Theold classical system gave way to an ever-increasing emphasis on science. Therewas an increasing sense of pride in beinga Trinidadian. Successive archbishopsmade more demands on the Spiritans forhelp in parishes. For the first time greatnumbers of Protestants and non-Christians were enrolled. (whereas in1921 85% of pupils were Catholics, by1952 almost 29% were non-Catholics).Between the wars, there was anextraordinary flourishing of religioussocieties in the College. No attempt wasmade at proselytising in the school.Trinidadians of East Indian descent whowere Catholics began to apply for placesfor their sons. In 1946 there were over1,300 students on roll.

Fr. English and Fr. Meehan played a hugerole in the physical expansion of theCollege plant. A new chapel was openedin 1943. As elsewhere, lay teachers beganto take on a greater role in all areas ofCollege life. Trinidad-born Holy Ghostpriests also took on a major role in thelife of the College and the local religiousfamily. The Spiritans founded a newsecondary school in Port of Spain, FatimaCollege, in 1945.

FR. LEONARD GRAF CSSpSpecial mention must be made of Fr.Leonard Graf. He came from Germany as

Page 113: ST. MARY’S COLLEGE C.S.Sp. · 2018. 8. 9. · St. Mary’s College, Trinidad 110 Junior School Staff, Board of Management 114 Junior School Roll 2004-2005 116 Junior School Class

a student-teacher in 1905, returning as apriest in 1911. He taught andadministered in the College until 1966,when he retired. In 60 years teaching, hemissed only two days of class! He wasDean of Studies for the whole schoolfrom 1920 to 1957, taught eight HigherCertificate classes a day, ranging fromGreek to French to Botany and Zoology. He directed a Shakespeare play each year;ran the boys’ library; produced theCollege Annual; was in charge of thechoir and played in the school orchestra! In the context of the time, theaccomplishments of Fr. Graf and hispriestly colleagues were truly remarkable.Among his collaborators were Fr. MartinMaiben and Rathmines past-pupil Fr.John Farrell. The work of our own Fr. JimMcNulty and many other Irish Spiritanstudent-teachers (Prefects) was of equalvalue in building up every aspect ofCollege life. (In turn several TrinidadianSpiritan prefects spent one or two yearsteaching in Rathmines!)

The CIC motto now is Virtus et Scientia –manliness and wisdom. In 1957 Fr. Pedro

Valdez CSSp became the first Trinidadiancollege principal. Following independencefrom Britain in 1962, the governmentsought more control over education. Theold classical curriculum had given way togreater emphasis on science and latterlyon business subjects. The College hadtremendous success in sport, particularlyin soccer and cricket.

Alumni of CIC have been leaders of theChurch in Trinidad (Archbishop AnthonyPantin, Fr. Michel de Verteuil), leaders inTrinidadian social endeavours (Fr. GerardPantin of Servol Social services, Fr.Gerard Farfan, of the national schoolteachers’ union) and in national sport(cricketers Brian Davis and WillieRodriguez) – to mention only a few. May the great educational endeavourthat is the College of the ImmaculateConception, Port of Spain continue toflourish!

(Grateful acknowledgement is made to Fr.Anthony de Verteuil CSSp, author of TheHoly Ghost Fathers of Trinidad formaterial used in this article.)
