St Mary’s Catholic Church Greenville, South Carolina @ @ @ @ @ 2 August 2020 Dear Friends in Christ, Prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance are the cardinal or hinge virtues around which all other human virtues are grouped, and a life of virtue is essential to finding the happiness our hearts naturally crave. Last week I described prudence as the charioteer of the other virtues, and now we will look at the other three cardinal virtues as they are described in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Justice is the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbor. Justice toward God is called the virtue of religion, and justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good. The just man, often mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures, is distinguished by habitual right thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbor. (CCC 1807) Fortitude is the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good. It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life. The virtue of fortitude enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecutions. It disposes one even to renounce and sacrifice his life in defense of a just cause. (CCC 1808) Temperance is the moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods. It ensures the will’s mastery over instincts and keeps desires within the limits of what is honorable. The temperate person directs the sensitive appetites toward what is good and maintains a healthy discretion. Temperance disposes one to avoid whatever is base and to live a sober, upright, and godly life. (CCC 1809) The cardinal virtues, like all human virtues, are acquired by education, by repeated good choices, and by an ongoing effort to forge a good character that moves us to cooperate with God’s grace with honesty and humility. These human virtues are no substitute for three theological virtues of faith, hope, and love that are poured into us at our Baptism as a free and unmerited gift by which alone we are justified by God’s grace. But the cultivation of human virtues is an essential task for anyone who wants to live a peaceful and well ordered life, particularly when we are confronted with political turmoil and danger to both personal health and public order. SARS-CoV-2 will continue to spread, and the violence convulsing our cities will not abate on its own, thus requiring action to restore order. Our economic security is endangered by both of these forces, and it seems likely that we must live with this chaos for some time to come. Therefore, let prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance be our guides in the storm. Father Newman

Dear Friends in Christ,

Prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance are the cardinal or hinge virtues around which all other human virtues are grouped, and a life of virtue is essential to finding the happiness our hearts naturally crave.

(CCC 1807)

Fortitude is the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good. It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life. The virtue of fortitude enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecutions. It disposes one even to renounce and sacrifice his life in defense of a just cause. (CCC 1808)

Temperance is the moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods. It ensures the will’s mastery over instincts and keeps desires within the limits of what is honorable. The temperate person directs the sensitive appetites toward what is good and maintains a healthy discretion. Temperance disposes one to avoid whatever is base and to live a sober, upright, and godly life. (CCC 1809)

The cardinal virtues, like all human virtues, are acquired by education, by repeated good choices, and by an ongoing effort to forge a good character that moves us to cooperate with God’s grace with honesty and humility.

SAn Introduction to Catholicism

What is Catholicism?

Is the Catholic Faith in the Bible?

Did the Lord Jesus found the Catholic Church?

Our course called An Introduction to Catholicism is designed to answer

these and many other questions about the origins of Catholic

Christianity and the shape of Christian faith and life within the

Catholic Church.

The classes meet on Wednesday evenings from 6.30 to 7.30 pm from

Labor Day through Easter, and all are invited to come and discover what

it means to be a disciple of the Lord Jesus in His holy Catholic Church.

Director of Catechesis and Congregational Care

St Mary’s has an opening for a new Director of Catechesis and Congregational Care. The full time staff member will work under the supervision of our Pastoral Associate, T.J. Nielsen, to coordinate the catechesis and sacramental preparation of the children in our parish who do not attend St Mary’s School. This person will also be responsible for several forms of service to the wider parish and provide staff support to both Fr Newman and T.J.

The preferred candidate for the position of Director of Catechesis and Congregational Care will be a practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church who has at least an undergraduate degree or equivalent professional training and relevant experience in a parish or other appropriate setting. This position is full time and benefits eligible, and all interested parties should send a letter and resume to Fr Newman at [email protected].

Welcome NewcomersWe welcome the following new members to our parish family: Drs Cory & Kimberly Shaffer, Dr & Mrs Robert Jones and Ms Erin Humphreys.

Streaming Mass in Gallivan Hall Anyone who wants to attend Mass at St Mary’s is welcome to do so, and Gallivan Hall will be open during every weekend Mass in July to provide plenty of room for everyone. Mass will be clearly visible and audible in Gallivan Hall thanks to our cinema screen and sound system, and the rest rooms to the left of the stage will be open.

Those who attend Mass in Gallivan Hall will be welcome to receive Holy Communion either by walking over to the church during the Communion Rite or by coming immediately after Mass and waiting in the center aisle for the priest or deacon to begin a second distribution of Communion. These two options will allow for the reception of Holy Communion without a crowd forming in the church.

Please note that every other pew will remain closed to allow for social distancing, and we continue to encourage strongly the wearing of a face mask and careful attention to hand washing and purifying to help reduce the spread of the virus. Our cry rooms remain closed because proper distancing is not possible in those spaces, and for now Confessions are being heard in the cry rooms on Saturday from 3.30 - 4.30 pm. The Wednesday afternoon Holy Hour will return on 5 August.

Finally, the dispensation from the Sunday obligation remains in force, which means that no one is required to attend Mass, even though all must find a way to keep the Lord’s Day holy, and the best way to do that is by joining in the sacred liturgy live-streamed on Sunday morning at 11 am. If you are at risk of the severe symptoms possible from exposure to SARS-CoV-2, then please stay home and join us in prayer remotely.
