A Message from one of Our Parishioners Regarding Online Giving

Have you discovered online giving? In this time where we are all sheltered at home, St. Mary’s financial needs con-tinue. Setting up online giving is easy and secure. You can do a one-time, weekly or monthly. Once my husband and I set this up, we receive a weekly reminder that the with-drawal is being posted.

If you need any help, please email/call 603-491-3910 [email protected] and I can help you set this up. Lori Myers

“In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” ~ Luke 20:35

Due to the present circumstances we have not finalized the times that we will be streaming the celebrations of Holy Thurs-day, Good Friday and Easter. This infor-mation will be posted to the parish webpage, sent out via the parish email list and shared on the other parish social me-dia platforms once it has been finalized.

LENTEN FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednes-day, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent.

FASTING is to be observed by all, 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed.

ABSTINENCE is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and absti-nence, the parish priest should be consulted (CCL, Nos. 1251-1252).

Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disci-plines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should under-take these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

Level IA Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Training Here at St. Mary’s – June 21-27

Would you like to find out more about the acclaimed approach to children’s faith formation known as the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd? Are you perhaps interested in becoming a catechist here in St. Mary’s CGS program, also known as “the atrium”? If either of these questions speak to you, this special opportunity may be of interest.

St. Mary’s is privileged to be able to offer Level I Part A CGS Catechist Formation Training this coming June with Sr. Mary Rose Bingham, OP, of the Congregation of St. Cecilia in Nashville. Sr. Mary Rose is trained in all three levels of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, currently works in both Level I and Level II atria, and is a nationally recognized Level I and II formation leader. This summer’s training will take place in the St. Mary’s Church Hall from June 21 through June 27. Next summer, Sr. Mary Rose will offer Part B of the Level I training. The cost for Level I Part A will be $250. (Please note: the pastor may waive the fee for any parishioner willing to commit to serving as a catechist in St. Mary’s atrium pro-gram for 3 years following completion of his or her Level I training.)

For more information or to enroll, please contact Lori Murphy at [email protected]

RICE BOWL Last weekend was supposed to be collection weekend for the Rice Bowls. Since we do not foresee having public Masses resume in the near future, and since we do not have collection counters available to count the Rice Bowl money turned in by individuals and submit one check for the total to Catholic Relief Services, instead individuals should mail their Rice Bowl donations directly to Catholic Relief Ser-vices at the following address: CRS Rice Bowl P.O. Box 17090 Baltimore, MD 21297-0303 Alternatively, their donation can be made online at: https://support.crs.org/donate/change-life-lent-2 Thank you to everyone who is participating in the Rice Bowl efforts this year. We look forward to having a “normal” Rice Bowl collection for Lent in 2021.

A MESSAGE FROM FR. JOHN PAUL …

Want to have something to fill some time that will also be a great act of charity? I have been in touch with a staff member at Mary Wade Home here in New Haven (she is the sister of one of our St. Mary parishioners) and she said they are pretty desperate for people to send in cards, notes, letters, etc. to the residents. With no visitors allowed at all (not even immediate family) residents are getting lonely.

The only request that they make is that, since many of the residents are already quite anxious and worried about the coronavirus pandemic, that the notes/letters/cards not focus on that topic, but rather be "uplifting" in theme. It was men-tioned that children drawing or coloring pictures might be especially heartwarming. They suggested signing it if you are comfortable (at least a first name); or for children, a first name and age might be nice.

They can be mailed to: Residents of Mary Wade

Please feel free to pass the word!

Due to the present circumstances we have not finalized the times that we will be streaming the celebrations of Holy Thurs-day, Good Friday and Easter. This infor-mation will be posted to the parish webpage, sent out via the parish email list and shared on the other parish social media platforms once it has been finalized.

In light of the uncertainty of the extent and duration of the Coronavirus in Connecticut, Archbishop Blair has

issued an update. The cancellation of Masses and liturgies through April 3 is now extended through April 30, which includes Easter and there are no confessions until further notice. New options for Holy Week are being developed. Here is the Archdiocese announcement:

https://archdioceseofhartford.org/ May this crisis provide fruitful ways for us to connect with our Church and with God in prayer.

Stay Connected to God and Others during this COVID-19 Crisis

Our Brother’s Keepers is a new ministry that builds on the care and compassion already in our parish to meet our very challenging COVID-19 times. We con-nect with each other and with God in prayer during this crisis. We support each other so that those who are at greatest risk do not have to leave their home. Here’s how it works…

All who join “Our Brother’s Keepers” are willing to: Contact a fellow parishioner by phone every oth-

er day or twice a week during the COVID-19 crisis with a friendly hello and wellness check.

Pray daily, and if possible together on your call, for an end to the pandemic, and for God’s strength and perseverance in our world, coun-try, and parish. Suggested prayer:

Sub Tuum : We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God, despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Glory Be: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Identify any ways that allow at-risk parishioners to continue to maintain their quarantine.( eg. some gro-ceries, a prescription, etc.) & refer any needs to email [email protected] or contact Fr. Leo at the parish office.

Strengthen ties between us at a time when uncertainty and isolation abound, even when there are no er-rands/urgent needs.

Who joins and how do I join????

Anyone who is willing to touch base with another as described above can join. We will match you up with someone to contact. Or maybe you are already doing a wellness check with another, and you want to add the intentional prayer and discussion of current needs. Join as a pair. There are already over 30 pa-rishioners interested and we would love to see Our Brother’s Keepers keep growing. Think of the pray-er, care, and connection! It is easy to join … just email [email protected] with your name and your phone number or any questions.

SANCTUARY LAMP We burn the sanctuary lamp at St. Joseph this week for the glory of God and for the repose of the souls of:

ALL VICTIMS OF COVID-19

In your charity, please remember them in your prayers. The sanctuary lamp is a can-dle that burns in the sanctuary indicating the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. Those who wish to have the candle burning for a specific intention can contact the par-ish secretary for more information.

BIBLE STUDY IN EXILE Join Fr. Leo on Tuesdays from 1 to 2pm via Facebook Live as he continues our Parish Bible Study online. While Bible study is a social engagement as much as a spiritual one, we're hop-ing this can fill a need. To our regulars, we're putting our long-term study of St. Paul on hold until we can get back together. To those who are familiar, or unfamiliar, we'll be going through the Epistle of St. James instead! The first session is already on the parish Facebook and YouTube pages, as will all studies henceforth. Those hearing it live are encouraged and welcomed to type in questions as he goes, as we’ve made him promise to try to field them on the fly!

Whether you can sit in every week, or stop in when you're able, you're certainly welcome! We're just sorry that we can't provide any coffee.

THE ONE CARRYING THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD Just over a week ago, on a dark and rainy evening in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis bestowed an ex-traordinary “Urbi et Orbi” blessing. In other words, a special blessing “upon the city (Urbi)(that is, Rome) and upon the world (Orbi).” When I say this was an “extraordinary” blessing, I do not use that word in the sense of amazing or wonderful or anything like that, but in the more technical theological sense, that is a blessing that is given out of the ordinary pattern of the life of the Church. Normally a pope bestows the Urbi et Orbi blessing twice a year: on Christmas and on Easter Sunday. The only other time in the life of the Church we typically see it done is when a new pope has been elected. I watched the event live as it unfolded, and was profoundly moved. For those who were not able to see it, I would like to describe the scene. The pope began the blessing by walking, by himself, through St. Pe-ter’s Square up a long sloping staircase up to a dias. He had no assistant with him to lean on to steady himself. He had no aid carrying an umbrella to shield him from the rain. It was just the pope, by himself, a lone figure walking through the pouring rain to his chair to begin the prayers. Only once he reached the dais did he have some shelter. He gave a long and very moving address, then spent time (again, in the rain) reverencing two miraculous relics normally elsewhere in Rome: the miraculous image of Our Lady, Salus Populi Romani (“Health,” or, salvation, “of the Roman People”), an icon of the Blessed Mother and the Christ child normally residing in the Basilica of St. Mary Major; and then he prayed before the mirac-ulous crucifix that usually resides in the Church of St. Marcellus in Rome, a crucifix that historically was processed through the city in the 1500’s and credited with ending the plague in the city. After this, he spent some time in prayer and adoration before the Blessed Sacrament within St. Peter’s Basilica before walking out to the doorway of the basilica leading out to the square and bestowing the Eucharistic Bene-diction upon the city and the world. The image was striking. This old man, who quite literally carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, who also happens to have only one lung, half-walking, half-limping and struggling with the weight of the monstrance as he turned to return it to the altar inside. The emptiness and desolation of St. Peter’s Square, normally jammed with people anytime a papal event is happening, absolutely empty other than the relent-less raindrops that kept falling to the pavement. It struck me that in those countless raindrops we might see the countless tears of so many in our world today: the tears of those dying in hospitals where there is no medical equipment left to save them; the tears of family and friends who have lost a loved one or whose loved one is dying; the tears of doctors and nurses and so many other health professionals risking their own safety to help others yet finding themselves unable to save so many. In the midst of the world weep-ing, the Vicar of Christ, himself with a broken body, begged for mercy upon the whole world. Thanks to the hard work of our parishioner and parish webmaster Bethany, the full text of Pope Francis’ address, along with a video of the full hour-long event, can be easily found on our web page at https://www.stmarysnewhaven.org/urbi-et-orbi-blessing.html and I would highly encourage anyone who has not watched the event to carve out the time to do so. It is my personal opinion that, years from now, history will look back at that blessing as the defining moment of Pope Francis’ papacy. As we head into the holiest week of the year and prepare to celebrate the Sacred Triduum, may the Lord shower His blessings upon you all. On behalf of all the friars and staff of St. Mary’s, know we walk with you to the Cross and look forward to waking with you at the Empty Tomb. God bless,

Fr. John Paul
