THOUGHTS OF BECOMING A CATHOLIC?

Perhaps you have not been baptized into a Christian Community. Perhaps your spouse is Catholic and you aren't. Perhaps you were brought up Catholic but were not fully initiated.

There are many reasons for wanting to learn more about the Catholic Church. The good news is that the Catholic Com-munity of St. Mary of Vernon has an excellent program for those who would like to learn more about our Church and/or Faith. Low key/no pressure, informal Q&A, meeting with a small group of parishioners willing to share their experi-ence. Individuals who would like to know more can drop in on these weekly open discussion meetings – currently held on Wednesdays at 7:30 PM in the Lower Level of the Rectory; December dates include Dec. 6 and Dec. 13. Or to connect with someone on our team for basic information or to set up an appointment to discuss specific questions or goals, con-tact Maureen Evers (847-362-1005 or [email protected]) or Mark Zwolski (847-644-7073 or [email protected]).

WE BELONG TO CHRIST IN THE CHURCH: A PRACTICAL ECCLESIOLOGY FOR RENEW MY CHURCH

FATHER LOUIS J. CAMELI

(We resume this series of articles, Part 5 of which appeared in the November 5 bulletin)

Part 6 God’s essential gifts which give the Church its form and identity

A foundational gift or grace which God gives to the Church is communion or a deep unity in community. This flows from the pattern of God’s merciful plan for us: “It has pleased God...to make men [and women] holy and save them not merely as individuals without any mutual bonds, but by making them into a single people…” (Lumen gentium, 9) And the night before he died, the Lord Jesus prayed for the unity of the Church: “...that they may all be one...as you, Father, are in me and I am in you…” (John 17:21). A second essential gift and identifying marker of the Church is the Word of life entrusted to the Church. The Church holds the Word and shares the Word. And intimately connected to the Word are the sacraments, which celebrate and make present the saving mysteries of Jesus Christ. When the Church celebrates the sacraments, it makes the saving mysteries of Jesus Christ available and accessible across time and space. Through the sacraments we are drawn into union with Jesus Christ who is our life. Another holy gift of the Church is mission. The Lord sends his Church into the world, as he says, “Go and proclaim the Good News.” That mission is both a gift and responsibility for the Church and all who belong to the community of faith. Mission means being in the world and for the world in the name of Jesus. Mission leads to new life in the Church through the initiation of new believers. Mission also means working for jus-tice, peace, and a profound respect for all life, which are constitu-tive elements of proclaiming the Gospel. Among the apostles, Jesus singled out Peter to serve his Church in a particular way. Peter was to be a “rock”, a foundation and firm reference point for true faith. He was to “feed the sheep”, that is, nurture and keep the flock together. He was to confirm or strength-en his brothers and sisters on their journey to God. This ministry of Peter continues as a gift in the Church through the ministry of the Pope, who is our “holy father” insuring fidelity, unity, and hope for those who believe. The Pope together with the bishops serves the Church in response to Jesus’ prayer the night before he died: “...that they may all be one.” (John 17:21) Question: Of these gifts in the Church—community, word, sacra-ment, mission, and Peter’s ministry—which ones have touched my life and inspired me in a special way? How have I or can I carry these gifts forward?

PRAYER FOR “RENEW MY CHURCH” Lord Jesus, you speak to us today. as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: “Renew My Church.” Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly to listen to each other attentively to imagine our future boldly to discern your direction wisely to persevere in your holy will courageously to stay together in charity to surrender our own plans readily to embrace the greater good to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usual burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentive-ness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The savior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation.

SHARING HANDS 2017 CHRISTMAS FOOD BASKET

PROGRAM Each year the Sharing Hands ministry provides a Christmas food basket and gifts to a number of needy families in our area. This year approximately 100 families have

been signed up for this special program. The gifts for the families are acquired through the ‘Gift Sunday’ pro-gram, but we also need adopting families to donate food baskets for these families. If you are interested in providing food for one of these families in our community, please sign up on the forms in the red folder located on the reception table in the narthex. You will be contacted via letter with the details of the family, suggestions for food items, and drop off details. The client families will pick up their gifts and food baskets on Saturday, December 16, at the Parish Center from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. All the donated food bas-kets need to be dropped off that morning, December 16, between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. prior to the recipient family arrivals. Please indicate on the form the size of the family for which you would like to shop. Food certificates (Jewel, Garden Fresh, Mariano’s) along with your food choices will help supplement future needs as well. All groceries must be contained in either a box or basket and labeled with the family’s ID # (which will be noted in your letter) to avoid any mix-ups. If you have questions or need further information, call Frank Ruder at 847-362-9509. Thank you in advance for your generosity in helping to provide a better Christmas for the less fortunate in our area.

The Unemployment Line

Addressing those dreaded interview questions (part 1)…

If you’re conducting a job search while employed, expect to be asked the question: “Why are you leaving your current job?”

This question trips a lot of people up because it can get you into a negative mindset or a rant against your present (or previous) job. The interviewer only wants to know that you aren’t leaving purely for money and that you don’t have trouble ge ng along with people. Even if you were fired, the key to answering this question is to maintain undying positivity. Put a pos-

itive twist on the negatives to show your interviewer that you’ve learned significant and valuable lessons. If at all pos-sible, show the interviewer that your moving jobs is all about passion and career growth.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many people think that Saint Francis originated the Christmas crèche, but its origins go far back. The Ba-silica of St. Mary Major in Rome has housed what is said to be relics of the cradle of Jesus since the seventh century. In time, every year during the Christmas sea-son the reliquary (container for relics) was surrounded by an increasingly grand three-dimensional scene of the place of Jesus’ birth. Rocks and trees, houses, streams, figurines of villagers going about their daily tasks were all included. It was a very dramatic presen-tation. If you’ve ever seen an elaborate model train installation, you get the idea. The proper term for this depiction is presepio, from the Latin word for “surround” or “hedge.” Over the centuries, the custom spread first to churches, and then to aristocratic homes. In Italy, whole chapels are often set aside for the presepio, and it is not unusu-al to have hundreds of figures. It can sometimes be a challenge to locate the Holy Family amid the crowd, almost like a Where’s Waldo? children’s book. The oldest surviving presepio is in St. Mary Major and dates from the thirteenth century, although many piec-es have been broken or lost. Saint Francis of Assisi took a decidedly creative step in 1233 in the village of Greccio, when he directed his followers to fill a man-ger with hay and tether an ox and ass nearby. He then invited the villagers to attend Mass outdoors near the crib, the worshipers themselves becoming a living presepio. By the seventeenth century, the tradition was well-established, particularly in Naples, and had a firm hold in Portugal, Spain, and in the Provence region of France. Today, it is not unusual to find presepios with five hundred figures, a vivid reminder of Emmanuel, God-with-us! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
