From the desk of the U.S. Bishops … Through his Cross and Resurrection, Christ united the one human race to the Father… Racism arises when-either consciously or unconsciously-a person holds that his or her own race or ethnicity is superior, and therefore judges persons of other races or ethnicities as inferior and unworthy of equal regard. When this conviction or attitude leads individuals or groups to exclude, ridicule, mistreat, or unjustly discriminate against persons on the basis of their race or ethnicity, it is sinful. Racist acts are sinful because they violate justice. They reveal a failure to acknowledge the human dignity of the persons offended, to recognize them as neighbors Christ calls us to love (Mt 22:39). Racism occurs because a person ignores the funda-mental truth that, because all humans share a common origin, they are all brothers and sisters, all equally made in the image of God. When this truth is ignored, the conse-quence is prejudice and fear of the other, and-all too often-hatred. Cain forgets this truth in his hatred of his brother. Recall the words in the First Letter of John: “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him” (1 Jn 3:15)… Every racist act-every such comment, every joke, every disparaging look as a reaction to the color of skin, ethnicity, or place of origin-is a failure to acknowledge an-other person as a brother or sister, created in the image of God. In these and in many other such acts, the sin of rac-ism persists in our lives, in our country, and in our world… All too often, Hispanics and African Americans, for exam-ple, face discrimination in hiring, housing, educational op-portunities, and incarceration. Racial profiling targets Hispanics for selective immigration enforcement practices, and African Americans, for suspected criminal activity. There is also a growing fear of harassment of persons from majority Muslim countries. Extreme nationalist ideologies are feeding American public discourse with xenophobic rhetoric that instigates fear against foreigners, immigrants, and refugees… Racism can often be found in our hearts-in many cases placed there unwillingly or unknowingly by our upbringing and culture. As such, it can lead to thoughts and actions that we do not even see as racist… Consciously or subconsciously, this attitude of superiority can be seen in how certain groups of people are vilified, called crimi-nals, or are perceived as being unable to contribute to soci-ety, even unworthy of benefits. Racism can also be institu-tional, when practices or traditions are upheld that treat certain groups of people unjustly… Despite the great bless-ings of liberty that this country offers, we must admit the plain truth that for many of our fellow citizens, who have done nothing wrong, interactions with the police are often fraught with fear and even danger. At the same time, we reject harsh rhetoric that belittles and dehumanizes law enforcement personnel who labor to keep our communities safe. We also condemn violent attacks against police. From “Open wide our hearts, the enduring call to love: A pastoral letter against racism”

7TH WEEK OF FISCAL YEAR 2020- 2021
R.C.I.A.
What is R.C.I.A.? (The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the ordinary way in which adults who were not raised in the Catholic faith become fully initiated into the Roman Catholic Church through Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Who is R.C.I.A. for? Someone who was baptized Catholic but then never received any other Sacraments; someone who was baptized into a different faith or Church; someone who was never baptized at all and is just beginning their life in faith; or simply, former Catholics who want to come home. It is for people from all walks of life and faith backgrounds who are curious about the Catholic Church, and who have at some time and on some level considered joining. How do I inquire or register? Call the parish office at 815.758-5432. You can call to regis-ter for the classes, to ask questions, or simply give us the name(s) of someone you think might like to be contacted.
Classes are scheduled to start on Thursday, November 5 at 7:00 PM (subject to change) in the Parish Office Presentation Room. A Bible and a Catechism of the Catholic Church should be obtained before classes begin. Program materials are provided.
The Gospel today announces that the kingdom and salvation are for all people. It is our persistent calling out to Jesus and our faith that count, for Jesus always responds.
With love for your neighbors, who have nothing, look around your house to see what furniture, household items, and clothing you no longer
use...and give it to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
Thank you for your continued support of St. Mary Church through your advertisement in our bulletin.

“Abortion affects countless marriages more than many people recognize. But there is no doubt that God will bring healing to those who trust in His infinite mercy. If a past abortion can be acknowl-edged and addressed, a married couple can make
great strides in experiencing even more fully God’s design that ‘the two shall become one’ (Mt 19:5).”

Stewardship In today’s second reading, St. Paul tells the Romans,
“God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.” To what is God calling me today? What gifts are mine to share?

Bishop Malloy has sent a letter to all parishes reminding us to remain vigilant and that the directives of distancing and wearing masks remain in effect for all areas on church property. It is easy for us to become complacent, so please remain alert, especially in regard to groups: there are not to be gatherings of people (of any age) from different households on church grounds without masks. Parishion-ers are not permitted to gather within 6' without masks on parish grounds.

St. John Eudes Feast Day - August 19
He was born at Ri, in Normandy, in 160l, the son of a farmer. At the age of fourteen, he entered the Jesuit college at Caen. He received his minor orders in 1621 and entered the Congregation of the Oratory of France in 1623. He was ordained in 1625 and went to work among the sufferers of the plague in Norman-dy. Soon after, he retired to the Oratory of Caen. In 1631, another plague struck and he went out to work with the victims. He spent the next ten years giving missions as a parish missionary and hearing confessions throughout France building a reputation as an outstanding preacher and confessor and for his opposition to Jansenism. He be-came interested in helping fallen women, and in 1641, with Madeleine Lamy, founded a refuge for them in Caen under the direction of the Visitandines. He resigned from the Oratorians in 1634 and founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, also known as the Eudists. His foundation was opposed by the Oratorians and the Jansenists, and he was unable to obtain Papal approval for it. He also estab-lished the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Refuge at Caen in 1650. He founded seminaries at Lisieux in 1653 and in Rouen in 1659 and was unsuccessful in another attempt to secure Papal approval of his congregation, but in 1666 the Refuge sisters received Pope Alexander III’s approval as an institute to reclaim and care for penitent wayward women. A noted spiritual writer, he wrote The Devotion to the Adorable Heart of Jesus in 1670 and The Admirable Heart of the Most Holy Mother of God, which he finished a month before his death. He is credited with initiating devotions to the Sacred Heart and to the Heart of Mary. He died on August 19, 1680 in Caen, France. He was beatified on April 25, 1909 by Pope Pius X, and canonized by Pope Pius XI on May 31, 1925.
