RCIA: Rite Of Christian Initiation for Adults
Are you not baptized and thinking you would like to become a Baptized Catholic? Are you thinking of becoming a Catholic? Do you
know someone interested in the Catholic Faith? Or you have been away from the Catholic Faith and would like to inquire on returning to the faith?
RCIA “The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” is the process of educational formation and spiritual
formation by which adults become full members in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church.
RCIA Inquiry classes have started on Sunday’s in the Family Life center. The RCIA schedule is posted
on St. Mary’s web site. www.smsj.org under “grow in faith”.
We invite all those who are not baptized, those who are baptized in other faiths and those baptized in
the catholic faith that would like to increase their knowledge in Catholicism.
Anyone interested in learning more about the possibility of joining the Roman Catholic Church or is
interested in increasing their adult faith formation are invited to contact RCIA director Donald A. Picard, Jr.
at [email protected] or 936-697-0195.
THE INTENTIONS OF THE HOLY FATHER FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY
To better know ‘the concrete problems that trouble the Universal Church, especially those of the
missions,’ the Holy Father asks that his monthly intentions be “the object of knowledgeable and
responsible prayer on the part of the people of God.”
Pope’s Intention: Human Trafficking. For a generous welcome of the victims of human
trafficking, of enforced prostitution, and of violence.
AA MEETINGS:
Every Monday evening at 8 p.m. in St. Mary’s
Family Life Center.
JOIN THE STITCHIN’ SISTERS
Are you interested in bringing back a lost art? Are you interested in having a good time with a great group of ladies? Think about joining the Stitchin’ Sisters. Hand quilting seems to be a lost art that we are trying to keep alive. We are a group of ladies that hand quilts three donation
quilts a year. One for the Plantersville Fire Department Auction, one for St. Joseph Bazaar Auction and one for St. Mary’s Bazaar Auction. If time permits between those quilts, we will quilt member’s quilt for a nominal fee. If you do not know how to quilt, we will do our best to help you out. We all have opinions! We can show you how to put up a quilt on a frame, how to mark it, how to quilt it, and how to finish it. We meet every Wednes-day from 9:30 to 2:00 at St. Joseph Hall. Bring your own
lunch. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE! For more information,
contact Juli Murphy: at 936-206-0677 or
email [email protected].

Women’s ACTS Retreat ~ April 4-7, 2019
Preparations have begun for the SMSJ Women’s ACTS Retreat for 2019. The retreat will be held April 4-7 at the Kaiserhof Retreat Center in Tomball, Texas. We know the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus. Jesus wanted to spend time with Zacchaeus so he could get to know Jesus better. Is Jesus calling YOU to spend time with Him so YOU can get to know Him better? If you would like to grow closer to Jesus and reflect on His presence in your life, we invite you to join us for this grace filled re-treat. The retreat is open to women, 18 years of age and older. You do not have to be Catholic or a member of SMSJ Parish. Registration forms are available at the entrance of both St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s Churches and in the Parish Office. For more information, you may contact Lucy Lomonte at [email protected] or phone 936-597-8659 (home) or 832-489-2567 (cell).
Men’s ACTS Update for February, 2019
“The Joy of the Lord is My Strength.” NEHEMIAH 8:10 Congratulations to the men who attended the third Men’s ACTS Retreat!! Led by the Holy Spirit, we gathered with open hearts to challenge ourselves to explore the depths of our Father’s Love. We discovered along the way some of the shared experi-ences and gifts He has given to each of us. We climbed a mountain together over the weekend, and while we were up there, closer to God, it was like the tarnish of life was cleared away. We could see Jesus more clearly in the mirror. Now that we are back down in the world where we live, remember the experiences of the weekend. It is that glow of His Love that reminds us that we can BE, and ARE the face of Jesus to others. To all of you, may the message of ACTS continue to nourish you along your faith journey. Please join us for the “After ACTS” meetings~~watch the bulletin for the place and time.
“The Joy of the Lord is My Strength.” Nehemiah 8:10
DEEPEN YOUR FAITH
In a number of ways, Jesus warned his followers that pain and death would be an essential part of his mission. Not only would Jesus accept the Cross, he expected the same willingness from his disciples. Because Christ’s suffering and death was the instrument of salvation, from what did he save us? We needed to be saved from sin and its damaging effects. Jesus, Son of God, was sent by the Father to restore the harmony between himself and humanity that had been disrupted by sin. He came to teach and show us love. On the cross, Jesus freely gave his life as a sacrifice. His sacrifice was an act of atonement, that is, it makes us one again with God by the power of divine mercy extending to us the Father’s forgiveness of sins.
DOCTRINAL STATEMENTS To many in Israel, Jesus seemed to be acting against the Law, the Temple, and their faith in the One God. Christ suffered because he was “rejected by the elders and the chief priests and scribes” who handed “him over to the Gentiles to
be mocked and scourged and crucified” (Mk. 8:31: Mt. 20:19). Jesus did not abolish the law of Sinai. He fulfilled it and revealed its ultimate meaning (cf. Mt. 5:17-19; 6:43-48). Jesus honored the Temple, to which he journeyed for the major feasts and which he loved as God’s dwelling place on earth. By forgiving sins, Jesus manifested himself to be the savior (Jn. 5:16-18). Those who did not accept him as the Savior saw him
only as a man who claimed to be God, a blasphemer (Jn 10:33). Our salvation flows from God’s love for us because “he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins in accordance with the
scriptures” (1 Cor 15:3). Jesus came “to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mt 20:28). By his loving obedience to the Father, he fulfilled the atoning mission
of the suffering Servant, “he was pierced for our offenses, / crushed for our sins,/ by his stripes we were healed” (Is 53:5). The son of God who became man truly died and was buried, but his body underwent no corruption. In his human soul united to his
divine person, the dead Christ went to the realm of the dead and opened heaven for the just who came before him (cf. CCC, no. 637).
Christ’s Resurrection is an event that is historically attested to by the Apostles who really met the Risen One. The Resurrection is also a transcendent mystery because God the Father raises his Son from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The empty tomb help the disciples accept the fact of the Resurrection. When St. John entered the tomb, “he saw and believed” (Jn 20:8).
Christ is the “firstborn from the dead” (Col 1:18) and so is the principle of our own resurrection, now by the salvation of our souls, and at the end of time, when new life will be given to our bodies.
Christ’s Ascension marks the definitive entrance of his humanity into heaven. Christ precedes us there so that we, the members of his Body, man live in the hope of being with him forever. Jesus intercedes constantly for us as our mediator and assured the permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
At the end of time, Jesus Christ will come in glory to judge the living and the dead.
FOR DISCUSSION 1. When Jesus says our discipleship involves the Cross, what does this mean for you? In what ways do you find yourself resisting this part of Christ’s call? What is your “way of the cross”? 2. How would you help people come to faith in the Resurrection of Christ? Why is it so central to your faith? 3. How could you come to understand or experience the need for a Savior? Why are the Cross and the Resurrection bound
together in the Paschal Mystery?
MEDITATION MAKE HOLY WEEK HOLY Let us stretch ourselves, going beyond our comfort zones to unite ourselves with Christ’s redemptive work. We unite ourselves with Christ’s redemptive work when we make peace, when we share the good news that God is in our lives, when we reflect to our brothers and sisters God’s healing, God’s forgiveness, God’s unconditional love. Let us break bread together. Let us relive the holy and redemp-tive mystery. Let us do it in memory of him, acknowledging in faith his real presence on our altars.
