MY DEAR FRIENDS, IN TODAY’S GOSPEL, Jesus tells His apostles: “I am

not to be with you much longer,” prophesying His death and resurrection, and then Jesus gives us the identifying mark of a Christian: Love! Naturally, the first love of all of us is directly toward God, so that the visible mark of us Catholics is to become one with Jesus at Mass, on the weekly anniversary of His Resurrection. But this love directed toward God is sterile unless it bears fruit in our relationship toward our neighbors. Because, as the Bible says, “How can we claim to love God, whom we do not see, when we do not love the people that we see?” For this reason, Jesus gave us a new commandment: Love one another. And the measure of “How much love” is enough is given by Jesus Himself, when He commanded us to love one another as He, Jesus, had loved us, unto death! The mark of us Catholics is, then, our love for one another: “This is how all will know you as my disciples: your love for one another.” True love is expressed in good actions, in the way we care for the homeless, the hungry, the poor, the disenfranchised. And the sublime touch of love is forgiveness. When Peter asked Jesus how many times we should forgive those who offend us, the answer he got was an astonishing, “Always”! Two thousand years of Christian history has taught us that this commandment of love has been at times a terrible failure, but it has also shown us an ideal to which we unceasingly labor. It has been the fabulous success of billions of loving Christians.

Let us then resolve, my dear friends, to love one another, starting in Church, with our decent clothing and devout good example; continuing in the parking lot with our courteous respect for others; creating a warm, compassionate and forgiving glow of joy at home, at work and wherever we go.

TODAY IS ALSO THE ANNUAL COLLECTION FOR THE CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL. Right here in the United States, many dioceses do not have enough priests and trained lay ministers to serve their parishes. These are known as home missions. This collection supports these dioceses by funding essential ministries, including seminary education and lay ministry training. Please be generous in this appeal and share your resources to strengthen the Church at home.

DURING THE MONTH OF MAY, when I was a child, everyday we used to sing the song, “Bring the flowers to the fairest…” the best flower we can bring to Mary is the “Chain of Roses,” the so-called “Rosary.” Let us make it a family tradition to meditate on Jesus’ life through the recitation of the Rosary. The Rosary Makers will have free Rosaries in the Church Office for the month of May for the Blessed Mother. Stop by and pick up Rosaries for loved ones, friends or yourself. The Rosaries are hand made by men and women of the parish and are Blessed.

WE ARE VERY PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE FOLLOWING ST. MARTHA STUDENTS are candidates and received the Sacrament of Confirmation by Bishop Frank Dewane at St. Martha Church on Thursday, April 14. Please pray that with the power of the Holy Spirit they will be good Saints of Christ.

TODAY, APRIL 14, the Knights of Columbus, Our

Lady of Victory Council #3358, are having their Annual Tootsie Roll Drive in the courtyard after all Masses. This drive supports people with intellectual disabilities. All the money collected goes to local organizations within Sarasota County. If you are interested in joining the Knights, or would like to learn more about them, please contact Grand Knight Tom Gillis, 941-400-6991.

Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday. Last month you generous parishioners donated $6,342 to our volunteers at our Church doors to help them to continue to assist the needy of our area.

Today, April 24, will be the last 10:30 a.m. Mass in the Hall. The 9:00 a.m. Mass in the Hall will continue and end with our Mother’s Day celebration on May 8.

Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha’s priests: Frs. Patrick, Wojciech,

DOES GOD CARE WHAT I WEAR TO CHURCH? Activities and vacations can make getting to Mass each week

seem like a juggling act. Harder still is finding the time to dress properly and prepare as we would like. But approaching all aspects of the Eucharist carefully can deepen our Communion with Christ. What we wear can help. Make it feel special. If you were invited to a

friend’s house for an evening, wouldn’t you wear something nice and appropriate? Sunday Mass is a special time for you and God. Wearing good clothes makes it feel special. Send a message. Mass is also a communal celebration. When you look nice in church, you send a message to your Catholic brothers and sisters that you value your time together in God’s house. Just because it’s “in style” doesn’t make it “in style” for God. Use this guideline. When deciding what to wear in Church, think about this: If it’s something you would wear to a picnic, to play a sport, or to clean out the garage or the house, don’t wear it to church—even when on vacation.

Year of Mercy: December 8, 2015—

November 20, 2016 In the Gospels we often see Jesus deeply moved in the face of human misery and suffering. How, for example, can we forget Jesus’ compassion at the weeping of the widow of Nain for the loss of her only son?

Luke the Evangelist said: “And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion (splanchnizomai) on her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’” (Lk 7:13) He felt the same sentiment when he met the two blind men sitting by the roadside (Mt 20: 34), the outcast leper (Mk 1:41), and when He saw the harassed, hungry and helpless crowds, who in his eyes, were like sheep without a shepherd. (Mt 9:36, 14: 14, 15: 32; Mk 6: 34; 8:2)...

When offered His mercy, the sick recovered dignity, health, life, joy and hope. Seen in this manner, mercy is presented as “a founding experience of a new creation.”

The following words were written by a young lady who had an abortion. They illustrate the need for the Church and others in the pro-life movement to counsel those who feel pressured to abort, and to

give them alternatives: "The counseling was only pro-abortion. No information was given to me about pro-life choices or agencies at the abortion clinic. They also told me it wouldn't hurt. It was extremely painful. I was not told anything about how this would affect me for the rest of my life."

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
