Treasures From Our Tradition

From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the educa-tion of young people. In ancient Rome, teachers of boys had to resign their posts in order to become catechumens, since the education of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public education has been so attuned to other values that creative solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, government schools had a goal of “Anglicizing” the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of “hedge schools.” In these largely se-cret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cot-tages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmasters provided eager stu-dents with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish litera-ture, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people public-ly or privately, and “civil disobedience” ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish children enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her compan-ions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, inspired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threatened their faith.

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe En 1648 el franciscano Matías Abad llegó a la selva chocoana en la costa pacífica de Colombia. Allí, a pesar de los ataques indígenas en contra de los misioneros, pudo celebrar la fiesta de san Francisco (4 de octubre). Al pasar de los años la devoción a san Francisco en Cho-có se convirtió en una mezcla de la fe católica, las religiones africanas y la brujería. Este sincretismo es una forma de superstición que busca utilizar al santo en lugar de imitarlo. Esta confianza en imágenes y estatuas es común y hasta peligrosa entre los latinoamericanos. Las hazañas de ciertas imágenes milagro-sas llegan a proporciones exageradas. Por ejemplo, la imagen de “san Pachito”, como lo llaman los chocoanos, se le atribuye haber apagado un incendio que amenazaba la población. La pusieron delante de las llamas y las apagó con su propio sudor. Hay que tener cuidado con la importancia de las imágenes sagra-das de nuestras tradiciones. En un descuido pueden convertirse en ídolos o amuletos en lugar del recuerdo de la presencia divina y el desafío de vivir en santidad.

Our annual Oktoberfest Stewardship Ap-preciation is coming up!

Oktoberfest is an activity to express our gratitude to the Lord our God for blessing us through St. Mad-eleine Church. This celebration gives us the oppor-tunity to thank all of our parishioners and all organi-zations for the financial support, but also for the given of themselves in prayer, talent and time. If you did not receive a letter from the parish of-fice, one of two things could have happened: 1) you are not registered, or 2) there was a problem with the address we have listed. We will have entertainment with Music, games for the kids, jumpers, face paint-ing and much more! If you would like to donate toys for the games, you can drop them at the parish of-fice. You can pick up your free family meal ticket for our annual parish-wide picnic after all masses, the weekends of Oct. 13-14 & 20-21. Please bring dessert to share with everyone!

muy cerca! Oktoberfest es una actividad para expresar nues-tra gratitud al Señor nuestro Dios por bendicionesa través de nuestra parroquia de Santa Madgalena. Esta celebración nos da la oportunidad para agra-decerles no solo por su apoyo financiero, sino tam-bién por la entrega de sí mismos en la oración, ta-lento y tiempo. Si usted no ha recibido una carta de la oficina parroquial, una de estas dos cosas podría haber sucedido: 1) usted no está registrado (a), ó 2) hubo un problema con el domicilio que tenemos en la lista. Para preguntas favor de llamar a la oficina de la iglesia. En agradecimiento a sus donaciones tendremos nuestro convivio anual de Oktoberfest el domingo, 28 de octubre de las 12 a 4pm. Tendremos entrete-nimiento con Musica, juegos para los niños, brinco-lin, pintura para la cara y mucho más! Si usted desea donar juguetes para los juegos, usted puede entregarlos en la oficina. Después de cada misa de los fines de semana de 13-14 y 20-21 de octubre estaremos entregando boletos para usted y su fa-milia para que puedan disfrutar del entretenimiento y una comida gratis. Por favor de traer postre para compartir con to-dos!
