“The Lord measures out perfection neither by

the multitude nor the magnitude of our deeds,

but by the manner in which we perform them.”

St. Michael’s will be conducting two Lenten talks on sin, virtue, and salvation. From a philosophical, theological, and psycho-

logical perspective, we will learn about the Church’s moral teachings regarding the Ten Commandments. Across these two back-to-

back evenings we will explore the assumptions of human nature, the effects of guilt and shame, and the virtuous sacrifice of God’s

only Son, Jesus Christ, who suffered, died, and rose so that we could be saved and live in happiness forever. Sound too good to be

true? In fact, it is too true not to be for our good! Q&A and refreshments will follow the talks each night.

Our guest speaker will be Rev. Robert M. Pagliari. Father’s name and face will be familiar to many of our parishioners as the

visiting weekend priest whose Sunday homilies often recommend “Holy Homework”: Scripture passages to read and contemplate

for the following Sunday. Father Bob is professor of Communication and Theology at St. John’s University in Queens. He writes a

monthly column for the online edition of Catholic New York, the newspaper of the Archdiocese, and is a guest speaker every First

Friday on the Morning Air Program for Relevant Radio which broadcasts to over one million listeners across the nation. He has

taught in universities and seminaries in Connecticut, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Virginia, and at the American College in

Louvain, Belgium. In addition to his BA in philosophy, Father holds master’s degrees in psychology, theology, speech, religious

education and an earned doctorate in communication.

The first evening’s talk (Wednesday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m. ) is entitled “The Essence and Accidents of Human Nature.” The

information in this presentation lays the foundation for what it means to be truly human and explores the controversy of what hu-

mans are at our core: good, bad, neither or both (depending)? This session will also cover the first three commandments which per-

tain to our relationship with God.

The second evening’s talk (Thursday, March 22, at 7:00 p.m.) is entitled “Judas or Peter—betrayal or denial—which is worse?”

This session will cover the last seven commandments which pertain to our relationship with our neighbor.

If you would like to learn more about human nature and its impact on sin, virtue, mercy, and forgiveness in our relationship with

God and with one another through the 10 Commandments (especially during our Lenten preparations for Holy Week and Easter

Sunday!), then please join us for one talk or both as we rapidly approach the Celebration of the joy of Easter and beyond.

The subject matter of these morality/spirituality talks is intended for adult audiences 18 years of age or older. Mature language

(yet always appropriate language ) will be utilized to address adult topics that arise out of our call to holiness and to fidelity to the

Ten Commandments (including for example: life, end-of-life issues, marriage, and human sexuality).

Fr. Bob and Fr. John will hear Confessions each night from 6:15 till 6:45.

Lent 2018 AT ST. MICHAEL’S

Our Lenten observances will include the following:

● Lenten Spirituality Talks: Rev. Robert Pagliari (see the announcement above). Wednesday, March 21 and Thursday, March 22 (7:00 p.m. each night). Fr. Bob and Fr. John will hear Confessions each night from 6:15 till 6:45.

● On Fridays during Lent, Mass will also be celebrated at 12:15 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m. in the Upper Church. These Friday 12:15 and 5:30 Masses during Lent will be preceded by Confessions at the usual time (12 minutes before to 5 minutes before the Mass).

● Stations of the Cross will be prayed on Fridays at 7:30 p.m.

● A “Soup & Salad Supper” will be available on Fridays during Lent from 6:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. in the church basement. The supper will be open to all and prepared and served by parishioner volunteers. A free will offering will be gratefully accepted. These suppers are intended to make us mindful of foregoing a more substantial dinner on the Fridays of Lent in favor of a lighter meal that does provide sustenance while also highlighting the Lenten themes of sacrifice, self-denial, and penitential practices. Opportunities to (a) socialize with fellow parishioners and (b) get a quick bite to eat before going upstairs to the church for Stations of the Cross are also features of these suppers.

● Our additional times for Lenten Confessions during Holy Week are listed on page 4.

Annual Catholic Appeal 2018

“What does love look

like? Love looks like

YOU.”

-Bishop David M. O’Connell

February 18, 2018

“What does love look like? It has

the hands to help others. It has the

feet to hasten to the poor and

needy. It has eyes to see the misery

and want. It has the ears to hear the

sighs and sorrows of men. That is

what love looks like.” -St. Augustine of Hippo

c. 425 A.D.

To All St. Michael’s Parishioners and All Those Who Worship Here:

Thank You!!! The parish made a significant jump forward – and UPward! – during the past week in our

response to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Last week our tally was at $18,881.00 from 65 responding parishioners.

This week our tally has increased to $43,711.50 from 159 responding parishioners. That’s roughly 40% of our

$109,000 parish goal from approximately 5.4% of our 2,925 registered parish households. Our good start has

gained speed and picked up momentum and I am very, very grateful. BUT we still have a long way to go in or-

der to achieve our goal AND to reap the benefits of the rebated funds if we reach that goal and an even greater

rebate if we exceed the goal. Our parish has never succeeded in reaching its goal in the 20-plus years of the Ap-

peal. The Diocesan-wide goal is $7.0 million. Yes, we have made a good start but we have a long way still to go,

too.

The pledge cards and the brochures and the yellow golf pencils continue to be available to you in the

pews at all the Masses this weekend. The pledge cards may be completed and placed in the ushers’ collection

baskets or dropped off at or mailed to the parish office.

Please recall four weekends ago (February 17 and 18)….shortly after Ash Wednesday and shortly after

Valentine’s Day….“the Bishop’s video” was aired at all ten of our Saturday/Sunday Masses here at St.

Michael’s. In that video:

• St. John the Evangelist told us that “God is Love.” (1 John 4:8)

• St. Augustine (above on the left) asked “What does love look like?”

• Bishop O’Connell (above on the right) – answered that “Love looks like YOU”.

In addition, love ALSO looks like those whom YOU help with your Lenten good works of charity and prayer INCLUDING a contribution or pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal.

If our parish reaches the $109,000 goal, then 15% of those collected funds (approximately $16,000) will be rebated to St. Michael’s. If we exceed $109,000 in collected pledges, then 50% of that collected excess will be rebated to our parish. If our parish reaches its $109,000 goal and we receive the $16,000-plus in collected rebate funds, we will immediately use those funds (a) for a make-over and freshening of the ladies’ room and men’s room in the church basement and (b) for a feasibility/cost engineering study to evaluate the installation of a mechanical chair lift (similar to the accompanying photo) to assist our parishioners and visitors in descending/ascending the outdoor stairs leading to those restrooms.

As the people of the Diocese of Trenton and of St. Michael’s Parish, you have an opportunity (and I ask

you please) to take a moment and prayerfully reflect on any help you can give. We truly need EVERYONE to participate IN ADDITION TO the 5.4% of the parish households that have already made a pledge or already sent in a check.

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ urges us time and time again: “Whatsoever you do for the least of my

brothers you do for Me”. I am always grateful and moved by the level of support you give to our parish and to the Diocese. I thank you for this support, and may God continue to bless you and your family.

With prayers and gratitude,

Rev. John K. Butler, Pastor

The weekend of March 9, 10, and 11 was a busy one at St. Michael’s.

• Last Friday and Saturday (the 9th and 10th) our parish participated in the world

-wide and diocese-wide celebration of “24 Hours for the Lord” – a 24-hour, round-the-

clock Lenten day of prayer, sacraments, Eucharistic Adoration, grace, and penance. This

very special day – requested and encouraged by Pope Francis himself – began with our

daily Mass at 8:00 a.m. on Friday and concluded with Saturday morning’s 9:00 a.m.

Mass. Countless parishioners “made a little visit” to the church during the course of the

day and night (including a Midnight Mass and a 1:00 a.m. snack in the Lower Church) to

pray before the Blessed Sacrament and go to confession (12 hours of confessions and

five priests were available during the 24 Hours). The church was all aglow on Saturday

morning with a magnificent sunrise at 6:00 a.m. that illuminated the center aisle leading

directly to the Altar and the Monstrance (photo on the right) and delighted the all-night

worshippers and the early-morning arrivers.

• And on Sunday the 11th we celebrated Mass at 9:00 a.m. in the gym at the Deal School as students,

parents, and teachers (photos below) marked the approaching end of the CCD school year and the rapid ap-

proach of Holy Week and Easter Sunday and gave thanks to God.

• May our Heavenly Father continue to bless everyone at St. Michael’s as we continue on our Lenten

journeys.
