GRACE, MERCY, AND PEACE (Continued from last week)

11. Continued

Furthermore, Saint John Paul II pushed for a more urgent proclamation and witness to mercy in the contemporary world: “It is dictated by love for man, for all that is human and which, according to the intuitions of many of our contemporaries, is threatened by an immense danger. The mystery of Christ… obliges me to proclaim mercy as God’s merciful love, revealed in that same mystery of Christ. It likewise obliges me to have recourse to that mercy and to beg for it at this difficult, critical phase of the history of the Church and of the world”.[10] This teaching is more pertinent than ever and deserves to be taken up once again in this Holy Year. Let us listen to his words once more: “The Church lives an authentic life when she professes and proclaims mercy – the most stupendous attribute of the Creator and of the Redeemer – and when she brings people close to the sources of the Saviour’s mercy, of which she is the trustee and dispenser”.[11]

12. The Church is commissioned to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel, which in its own way must penetrate the heart and mind of every person. The Spouse of Christ must pattern her behaviour after the Son of God who went out to everyone without exception. In the present day, as the Church is charged with the task of the new evangelization, the theme of mercy needs to be proposed again and again with new enthusiasm and renewed pastoral action. It is absolutely essential for the Church and for the credibility of her message that she herself live and testify to mercy. Her language and her gestures must transmit mercy, so as to touch the hearts of all people and inspire them once more to find the road that leads to the Father.

The Church’s first truth is the love of Christ. The Church makes herself a servant of this love and mediates it to all people: a love that forgives and expresses itself in the gift of oneself. Consequently, wherever the Church is present, the mercy of the Father must be evident. In our parishes, communities, associations and movements, in a word, wherever there are Christians, everyone should find an oasis of mercy.

Dominic’s story - Creating a harmonious future ‘Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.’ Hebrews 13.16. PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS

God of Joy The joy of the Gospel is such that it cannot be taken

away from us by anyone or anything. The evils of our world - and those of the Church - must not be excuses for diminishing our commitment and our

fervour. Let us look upon them as challenges which can help us to grow.

With eyes of faith, may we see the light which your Holy Spirit always radiates in the midst of darkness,

remembering that “where sin increased, grace has abounded all the more’. (Rom 5:20).

In our own lives, help us to discern how wine can come from water and how wheat can grow in the midst of

weeds. Let us disagree with prophets of doom, always

forecasting disaster! May we always be confident that, in our times, your

divine Providence is leading us to a new order of human relations, which, by human effort, and even beyond all

expectations, are directed to the fulfilment of your designs.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

[Prayer from Pope Francis’ words ‘The Joy of the Gospel’ (Evangelii Gaudium)]

As we gather to worship, we acknowledge the Traditional owners and custodians of this land- the Jaara Country we are standing on- the Jaara people of the Dja Dja Wurrung community and their forebears who have been custodians of this land for centuries.

ST LIBORIUS SCHOOL

Dear Parents and Friends of St Liborius, Opening school Mass On Monday we came together as a community to celebrate the Eucharist together. It was fantastic to see parents, grandparents and parishioners come along and join the students and staff for this important occasion. Thank you to Hollie Webster for her organisation of the mass and the way so many students were involved with the celebration. The readers did a beautiful job and it was a stand out to see 5 altar servers assisting Fr Junjun. There is training for new alter servers run by the Parish at lunch breaks if any children who are baptised Catholic and are in Yr 3 or above are interested. Thank you to Fr Junjun for his guidance and engaging manner with the children. We took the opportunity to welcome our new Preps, new students across school, new parents and teachers as well as our Year 6 leaders. We hope they find life at St Liborius rewarding. Swimming On Fr iday our St Libor ius swimming team did an amazing job representing our school. Inquiry Mindset Team Our Inquiry Mindset Team is an extension of the Designing Pedagogy Team from 2015. SLAVERY FREE EASTER CHOCOLATE CAMPAIGN

Buy it! Eat it! Talk about it! Approx 95% of chocolate is not certified free from the use of forced, child or trafficked labour. It’s estimated there are 1.5 million children working in the cocoa sector in West Africa. To buy slavery-free Easter chocolate look for any of these certification labels - Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance & UTZ. Pick up an information flier at the back of the church. “Every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral – and not simply an economic – act.” Pope Francis

MARIST COLLEGE

Mass each fortnight In the latter stages of last year we introduced a fortnightly mass for any staff and students who wished to attend. The numbers each time were quite good and so we are now offering this celebration every second Wednesday for staff, students, parents and parishioners. The first was held last Wednesday and was a simple and very prayerful occasion. Fr Junjun will be the celebrant for each Mass. The starting time is 1:15 pm in Studio 1 in the Montagne Centre. They will be every second Wednesday with the next Mass being on 2 March. Everyone is welcome. Fourvière On 23 July 1816, the day after Marcellin Champagnat was ordained a priest, he and some of his closest friends, travelled up to the hills overlooking Lyon, France. They travelled to the Chapel of the Virgin Mary at Fourvière to make a pledge. The pledge committed them to form a society in the name of Mary. Modelled on the idea behind the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) these young men vowed to form and grow the ‘Mary-ists”. 200 years later this has spread internationally as Marists. Like the initial dream the Marists today include Marist Priests, Marist Sisters, Marist Brothers and Lay Marists. Fr Champagnat was, of course the founder of the Marist Brothers. In commemorating the bicentenary of this important event our new building is named “Fourvière”. This name calls us all to reflect on our commitment to the Marist family. It is most significant that our senior class has this space to themselves during the 200th year. During this year we will reflect with our senior students on the significance for them to pledge their allegiance to being our senior Marists, our builders of our Marist culture. The actual 200th Anniversary of the Fourvière Pledge falls on a Saturday. We have decided to have the Official Opening and Blessing of Fourvière the day before, Friday 22 July. This is the 200th Anniversary of Marcellin Champagnat’s Ordination to the Priesthood. Darren McGregor, Principal

Two friends met in the street. One looked sad and almost on the verge of tears. The other man said, "Hey my friend, how come you look like the whole world has caved in?"

The sad fellow said, "Let me tell you. Three weeks ago, an uncle died and left me 50-thousand dollars."

"That's not bad at all...!"

"Hold on, I'm just getting started. Two weeks ago, a cousin I never knew kicked-the-bucket and left me 95-thousand, tax-free to boot."

"Well, that's great! I'd like that."

"Last week, my grandfather passed away. I inherited almost a million."

"So why are so glum?"

"This week - nothing!"
