God is with you in all you do—Genesis 21:22

Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today’s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the con-demned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious sym-bol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women prac-tices contemplative prayer and “spiritual hospitality” in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invit-ed the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 mar-tyrs. A Web site visit is possible at www.tyburnconvent.org.uk.

-- Salmo 126 (125):3

THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord’s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God’s love and care for us. “Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves” (Psalm 126:5–6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far cor-ners of the earth into the great banquet of God. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

School News - Wendy Kelly

Kid’s Corner

It’s hard to believe it, but our first quarter is over and report cards have gone out! There are so many exciting things taking place at St. Laurence School these days! Not only do we have committed and hard-working parents and a supportive Parish community, but we also have, what I feel is, the most dedicated teaching staff! Here’s just a few of the many ways our children reap the benefits of such a strong community! Our parents have organized and volunteered at our Bears vs. Packers Bingo event which was a success. Thank you to our 3rd and 4th grade parents for organizing and running this event! A special thank you goes to Rachael Hofmann and Kathleen Schaefer, our 3rd and 4th grade teachers, for organ-izing fun activities for the kids during Bingo. In addition, our Halloween Party is always a fun-filled event. It raised record amount for our school this year! Thank you to our PTC for your hard work in organizing this event! As I’ve mentioned many times, one of the ways that we are special is that our school community includes our Parish as well! You, too are not only a part of our team, but are an integral part. Thank you so much for your large contribution

to our Box Top collection and for your participation in our Trifecta! We raised $620. From Box Tops alone and almost a third of that came from you! I’ve included pictures of just a few of the many activities that have been happening in our classrooms this week. If you’d like to see more, please like us on Facebook! I would like to wish everyone in our Parish community a blessed week head!

Going on Mission This week marks the 13th anniversary of the White Sox winning the World Series against the Houston Astros. But on that same night of October 26 something even more remarkable happened. Over a hundred young men and women from the Aurora Dean-ery in our diocese were confirmed by Bishop Thomas Doran at Holy Cross in Batavia. That means over a hundred young men and women were sent on mission by God to overthrow the kingdom of darkness in this world. It is by the seal of Confirmation that we are sent into the world as the disciples were sent by Christ into every town and village proclaiming the Kingdom of God. For me, that was the moment God called me. The moment that chrism touched my head, I remember seeing the word “Priesthood” and knowing that an invitation from God. Did I respond right away? No. Was I like Peter who said ‘yes’ sometimes and ‘no’ other times? Certainly. Did God ever stop inviting me? Never. Do I regret it? Not in a million years. Ask Jesus to send you on mission. Ask Him where He wants you to go. You are His disci-ple - don’t be afraid. You won’t regret it.

Next follows the ‘Agnus Dei’ (Lamb of God) calling to mind that electric moment when John the Baptist pointed to Jesus at the Jordan and told the Apostles John (brother of James) and Andrew (brother of Peter) “Behold the Lamb of God!” (John 1:37). Immediately, John and Andrew began to follow Jesus who, turning around, surprised them by asking, “What is it you seek?” (That is a deep, deep question that Jesus asks each of us. But more on that later…) “Lamb of God” may sound a bit strange to us in contemporary Eng-lish, but back then — to that audience and in that language — it had a profound meaning and triggered a reflection on Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac and God’s promise to save His people. When Isaac asked his father, “Where is the sacrificial animal,” Abra-ham replied, “God himself will provide the sacrifice.” And so he did, thousands of years later in the person of Jesus. Jesus is the “sacrificial lamb” who takes away the sins of the world, fulfilling the prophetic meaning of the sacrifice of Abraham and the Passover event which set the Israelites free from bondage in Egypt. We say, “Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us … have mercy on us … grant us peace” because that is what the heart and soul seek: peace and repose from all worry, anxie-ty, and remorse for our own sinfulness. It is a beautiful way for us to prepare for the moment of Holy Com-munion.
