Dear Parishioners, Easter, as a 50-day season, keeps on going until Pentecost Sunday, May 19th this year. The color for the season is white. The Alleluia and the Gloria, restored now that Lent is over, are very fitting. The rich life of Christ, shared with us in Baptism, is celebrated. Flowers abound. In all, it is our festival time in the Church's litur-gical calendar. So, the life of Christ gives us life, and we rejoice. The “paschal mystery” is celebrated in Lent and Easter, as well as at every Mass and through all our sac-raments. It is one of the central concepts of our Christian faith. It relates to our having been saved from sin and delivered to a deep relationship with God. In short, it is the passion, the death and the resurrection of Christ. An image for it would be the butterfly, which had been a caterpillar until it entered the cocoon and then emerged from there to fly freely and with great beauty. Christ's resurrection indeed sets us free from sin, fear, confusion, and also the power of death. Because of Easter and the Christ of Easter, we have the power to be holy, coura-geous, enlightened with truth, and destined for life eter-nal. The word “paschal” connotes being passed over: God's leaving the Israelites untouched by the trouble God inflicted on their oppressors when they were on their way to the promised land. So, God “passed over” the Israelites. Jesus is the agent of our supreme passover experience; He has delivered us from what is bad to a life of goodness, holiness, peace, love and the promise of everlasting life. Mercy flows from the resurrection of Christ, and on Divine Mercy Sunday we remind ourselves of the assurance that God wants all to be saved (by Christ, from the effects of sin and death, so as to live with Christ for-ever) and not one to be lost (consigned to a life without God). So much depends, however, on our response to God. We have the God-given power and challenge to say Yes to God. If we bring serious sins to God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, with sorrow for our sins, then our life with God is renewed, sins are forgiven, sins' burdens are lifted, and sin's effects are reversed. Good food for thought here! Father George Evans

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Reflecting on God’s Word

Most of us find ourselves remembering a mixture of both good times and bad times. We are able to call up the blessings, those times when we lie back on the grass, hands behind our head, gazing at clouds and dreaming of how they shape themselves into silhouettes of what we’ve known and where we’ve been, a scrapbook of images dear to us. We hang on to such times. But other memories come along as well, clouds drearier if not also stormier. Adolescence, maybe— it can still taste like a copper penny. Or the growing-up relationship we once had with a parent—some still limp from it, a bruised or broken spirit that never healed the way it should have. Or the feeling that comes from never having made the team—not the basketball team or love’s team or even life’s team. It’s as if we got on the wrong bus when everyone left for the game, and ever after we gaze through the window at all the other buses filled with could’ve-been friends who never wave back. Mercifully life moves on. And if we’re blessed, it moves on into goodnesses of other sorts. Yet not without the scars, those ways our flesh has of remembering. In some ways they become the buoys that point out the deep-water channel in the river of life, markers for safe sailing as well as for rocky beds that rip us open. So we remember the wounds, which is what Thomas did. They marked the pain for him, but they also marked the real Jesus. He knew that if the wounds into which he would put his hands were real, so would Jesus be, and so also the demise of death. For Thomas it was the wounds that proved resurrection and so moved him into faith. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis
