A Message from the Spiritual Advisor – Fr. Oliver Iwuchukwu CSSp

I welcome all of us back from our summer holiday, back to that time of the year when we

are busier than usual planning and doing things to keep our League alive and well. An

important part of what we do in this regard is our prayers for the League to remain true to

its mission in our changing world. In this world, to stay alive and well and relevant,

organizations must continue to renew themselves. The leadership of our League knows this.

It also knows that renewal is an uphill task. To be successful, those who undertake to renew

themselves and their organization need all the help they can get from on high because, in

spite of the best of our human efforts, so much depends on the will of God. This is why we

are encouraged to persevere in our prayers for the renewal our League. And available to us

for this purpose is the CWL Prayer of Renewal.

This beautifully crafted prayer is addressed to God of new beginnings, the God who is ever

at work making all things new. In this prayer, we are asking for, among other things, “the

grace discernment and that “each of us open her heart and mind to Your will and welcome

the new life You bring to the League.” Open heart and mind, and the grace to welcome the

new. We all need these lest we become trapped in the past and refuse the grace of renewal.

In a way, this prayer is a reminder to us that we need to take another look at the life of the

League in our Parish. If we do, it will most probably become clear to us that all is not well.

Recently, a concerned past president had this to say about the present state of our Council:

“We cannot just boast that we have 212 members and not have programs that incorporate

all the needs of the Council and no one to contribute.” I am sure that this expresses the

thought of many of us. From all indications, we need the renewal we are praying for.

Perhaps we need to do more than we are doing to seek honest answers to such questions as:

Why is there this evident lack of interest in the affairs of the Council on the part of many of

the registered members? Why is there this evident unwillingness to accept leadership

positions? Is our League, in keeping with its mission, calling the members to grow in faith,

and to witness to the love of God through ministry and service? What can we renew to

make sure that this League stays alive and well?

Surely the renewal we are praying for will happen with the help of our Lady of Good

Counsel if we are open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Let us do all we can to make it

happen.

A Message from the Presidents – Kim Deans and Marla Tanuan

A Message from Community Life – Tania Mascarenhas

Hello Ladies,

Hope you all had a great summer and are feeling rejuvenated!!

I want to start by sharing with you the first directive sent by Mary Capobianco, who is the new Ontario Provincial

Council, Community Life Chairperson, According to her; “The next two years, our Provincial President, Colleen Perry,

has challenged us to build on the momentum of the Homelessness and the Warmth and Comfort Project and focus on

Loneliness. Loneliness, by definition, is a complex and usually unpleasant emotional response to isolation. Loneliness

typically includes anxious feelings about a lack of connection or communication with other beings. The causes of

loneliness are varied and include social, mental, emotional, and physical factors.”

Colleen Perry asked each standing chairperson to develop a plan of how they can address this issue in their committees

and Mary initiated the following project for the Community Life Standing Committee.

Some of the questions asked that we should think about are:

* How does your council keep in touch with those members that can't attend

meetings or attend regular Mass? How do you communicate with them?

* Does your council have a telephone committee?

* Does your parish have a Caring Ministry; a hospitality committee or greeters?

* Does your parish have a youth group; a craft circle, a mom and tots group?

* Do you have a group that visits shut-ins, nursing homes etc.?

The great thing is that the St. Joseph’s church and our CWL at St. Joe’s does in fact do many of the things that are listed

above. However, we need to think about (a) Expanding what is already been done by maybe forming a sub-committee

(b) thinking about new ways that we can reach out to those alone.

If you have any suggestions or would like to take the initiative to do something please do give me a call

Just before the summer, many of our sisters took a pledge to save water in multiple ways, and we encourage you to

continue to help us care for our common home.

Another environmental concern is plastic waste, a major part of which is one-time use and disposable plastic waste. At

the 2018 G7 Summit, the Oceans Plastic Charter was signed by leaders of many countries committed to more

sustainable, responsible and efficient plastic management, namely Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom

and the European Union. This is an extremely important issue for the future of our planet – but each of us can do a small

part to help, for example, bringing your reusable water bottles and shopping bags. For more information on how you can

help, please visit g7.gc.ca/wpcontent/uploads/2018/06/OceanPlasticsCharter.pdf.

This month of September marks the 8th World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign held every year that aims

to combat misinformation, stigma and stereotypes and spread awareness about dementia, an ever-important issue. The

impact of World Alzheimer's Month is growing, but the stigmatisation and misinformation that surrounds dementia

remains a global problem with global effect that requires global action.

Stigmatisation of Alzheimer’s prevents those affected from accepting or seeking help, and often prevents help from

being provided, as well as worsening the illness. Global discourse and discussion about this topic are essential to

reducing the stigma. During World Alzheimer’s Month we encourage you to find out more and play your part in

reducing the stigma and improving the lives of people with dementia and their caregivers in your community.

October 10th

, 2019 marks World Mental Health Day, with the overall objective of raising awareness and mobilizing

efforts in support of mental health. This year, the theme is suicide prevention. Every suicide is a tragedy that affects

families, communities and entire countries and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind. Suicide occurs

throughout life and is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds globally but affects all ages and

backgrounds.

On average, over 10 Canadians die by suicide daily. For every person lost to suicide, many more experience suicidal

thoughts or attempts, and many more are affected by the loss. It is, however, important to remember that if each of us

does even a little to help, we can combat many major issues, and let us all do our best to learn more about these issues,

and do our bit to make this world a better place.

Pornography Hurts Campaign – This is an issue which we must continue to bring to the forefront.

A Message from Christian Family Life – Nancy Jane Martineau

September brings with it ”Back to School” comforting rituals. The first day of school represents something of a rebirth.

It offers an opportunity for new experiences, new relationships, new knowledge and new skills. For most of individuals,

these routines bring excitement and eager anticipation. But for some students these are days of anxiety. I ask that you

please pray for all staff and students as they begin to strive towards their fullest potential this school year. May they feel

and see God’s loving presence each day within the classroom.

Autumn also brings with it a change in weather. The long sunny days become shorter and the nights become cooler. We

experience more rainy days and even the first flakes of snow. However, God provides us with such splendid colours in

the leaves, each one so unique like ourselves. God asks us to take the time to reflect on all the things we are “Thankful”

for in our lives and consider our own unique qualities.

Ignatius spirituality recognizes how in the Autumn we spend more time indoors and calls us to consider the interior of

our hearts. God is present with us at all times, but can we pay attention to the “Movement of the Spirit” within us. The

challenge is can we find a quiet time this season to make a new effort to attend to the movements within and discern

where God calls us to go?

Remembering Our CWL Members

Western individualism has sparked unprecedented social isolation, so we need to recover the biblical vision of human

nature and community. I am sure most of us have spoken with friends, family or CWL sisters who are experiencing

loneliness and isolation. This only increases when individuals may no longer be able to get out in the community for

various reasons and have become shut in their homes or have limited social activities. In Paul’s letters he emphasizes

establishing healthy community through sacrificial relationships.

Presently, we have about 14 CWL sisters who are shut-ins and would love to receive a phone call or visit from our

members. As some of you are aware for those sisters who are not well we provide a beautiful handmade lap quilt. On

the back of the quilt there is a special message telling our sisters that they were prayed for as this quilt was loving made

just for them. I am sure you can image how this touches a person’s heart knowing they are cared for so deeply. God

asks us to be devoted to one another in love. If any CWL members feel “Called to this Ministry” to visit or phone our

CWL members please contact Lucia Vacca. Be a joyful spirit for those in need.

Life Chain- Solidarity for the Unborn The Annual Life Chain will take place on Sunday October 6th. St. Joseph Parish will gather as a group at Lawrence and

Kingston Rds. at 2:00 p.m. My family makes this an annual event. It doesn’t take a lot of time and it would be great to

see more of you this year. We need to show our support for this important Social Issue. Be the Voice of the Voiceless.

Thanksgiving - Monday, October 7th

, 2019 is the Thanksgiving Holiday.

A Prayer of Thanks for Our Many Blessings

"Oh God, You are so good. You are faithful and gracious and You have blessed me beyond measure. Thank you for

everyday blessings to which I have become accustomed, but never want to take for granted: clean drinking water,

electricity, food in my pantry, hot showers, a roof over my head, and a bed to sleep in.

Thank you for legs that carry me where I need to go and hands that enable me to accomplish many things. Thank you

for my hearing and my vision and for a sound, healthy mind.

Thank you my family, my friends, my job, my neighbors. Thank you for freedom to attend my church, for my pastors,

and for my small group(s) and my many relationships.

Thank you for the things You are doing in my heart and in my life. I’m grateful that by the power of Your Holy Spirit, I

am much different today than I was 10 years ago, or a year ago. I am even different that I was at the beginning of this

year, and it’s because of Your power at work in me, continually transforming me into Your image.

I love and adore You, Lord, and my heart overflows with gratitude for all these blessings.

In the precious name of Jesus, Amen."

responsibilities at meetings? Take a look at www.cwl.ca under https://cwl.ca/resources/600-series-manuals/

On page 83. All about what the members responsibilities are at meetings, be present and active. This is our Council.

For your interest and knowledge building, become familiar with the roles and responsibilities of the executives:

Section 5: Positions and Responsibilities of the Executive positions including the Spiritual Advisor.

Our Council needs you, the members, to become an active and committed to the support of the events and initiatives of

the League to make a change and move forward into the future. Our Counsel at St. Joseph is now 66 years since it was

chartered in November 1953.

If you have any questions regarding the above or would like to know more, please give me a call or email me.

RECIPE FOR GOOD MEETINGS

Give your members:

1) Something to LEARN!

2) Something to SEE!

3) Something to HEAR!

4) Something to DO!

THE BEST ADVICE

1) Save money every week! It doesn’t matter how much. Just save!

2) Listen to your parent’s advice…at the end of the day they are the only

ones who want the best for you.

3) Choose your friends wisely as you are the product of your environment.

4) Learn to be alone and independent. It’s a skill few master.

5) Educate yourself – read, read, read.

6) Be Healthy & look after your body.

7) Don’t wait for someone to love you; learn to love yourself first.

Blessing to all of you, Lucia
