Homework Phonics (Friday for Wednesday) – based on daily phonics teaching and high

frequency words.

Handwriting (Friday for Wednesday) – To help encourage cursive handwriting.

Maths (Friday for Friday) – differentiated activities on Mathletics or another website based on the maths they have been practising that particular week.

Reading – We stress the importance of reading. This could be fiction, non-fiction, magazines, websites, instructions. Reading to your child (or sometimes a story tape or CD) is really valuable for all children, so even a bedtime story counts! A variety of different reading activities and texts is important for your child to broaden his/ her skills.

A minimum of 5 minutes each day, sharing a book together and reading for fun, will make all the difference to your child.

Phonics and handwriting

Every week on a Friday your child will bring home a Phonics Book. This will include a short task based on their phonics learning for that week. Please ensure it is returned by the following Wednesday.

Please continue daily reading with your child to allow them to continue to practise their phonics skills.

Your child will also bring home a handwriting book on a Friday. Please ensure your child practises their cursive handwriting using correct letter sizes. Please ensure it is returned by the following Wednesday.

Phonics TerminologyPhoneme - The smallest unit of sound that you can hear within a word; the word phoneme refers to the sound, not the letter(s). For example, in the word chat, there are three phonemes (ch-a-t).

Grapheme - A letter or group of letters representing a sound and we use the letter names for this. For example, the ‘c’ sound can be spelled with ‘c’, ‘k’ or ‘ck’ graphemes (as in ‘car’, ‘kite’ and ‘lock’).

GPC - This stands for grapheme phoneme correspondences. This simply means that they are taught all the phonemes in the English language and ways of writing them down.

Digraph - A two letter grapheme, such as ‘ch’, ‘sh’, ‘oa’ (two letters making one sound).

Split digraph: the ‘e’ at the end of words works with another letter to make a sound. Think about the difference between hop and hope – both have three sounds but the split digraph in hope creates a ‘long o’ sound.

Trigraph: A three letter grapheme such igh as in high, ear as in fear, air as in fair. (three letters making one sound).

Phonics TerminologySegmenting -  In order to read unfamiliar words children learn to segment them into phonemes.  Eg c-a-t.  This process also helps them when they are trying to spell words.

Blending - Children are also taught to blend which is the opposite of segmenting. This is when children say the sounds that make up a word and are able to merge the sounds together until they can hear what the word is, this helps them learn to read.

Tricky word - Words like ‘they’ and ‘said’ which can’t be sounded out easily.

HFW – (High Frequency Word) A word that occurs often in a text such as ‘it’ or ‘the’.

Alien words – Words made up of different phonemes to assess their phonics knowledge rather than words they know by sight, for example ‘shem’ (sh-e-m).

Sound buttons – Dots and dashes written beneath a word to represent sounds.
