Dear Parish Family,

Hormone shots. Anti-wrinkle potions. Herbal “miracles.” Yes, the business of anti-aging is booming. In the eyes of

researchers, we’re no closer to finding an “elixir of life” than we were thousands of years ago. Still the efforts to prolong life have been eminently successful. So successful have they been that gerontology, the care of the aged has become a seri-ous national problem and a lucrative business. More and more people are living to be older and older. But great as these modern, magical, medical drugs may be, they only push back a few weeks or a few months, they do not take away the inevitable hour of death. And so the dilemma remains. With all of the fibers of our being we want to live, yet, we know that we have to die. Jesus came on earth to give us the answer to that great human dilemma. He came not to tell us that we are going to suffer and die. We find that out sooner or later for ourselves. Jesus came to tell us that we are going to live. “I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly.” (Jn.10:10) And he didn’t come just to tell us. He could have done that through the prophets, or written it on stone tablets as he did the Ten Commandments. He came not just to tell us, he came to prove it. He became one of us, suffered and died on the cross, and on the third day rose from the dead. And he has promised that whoever believes in him will also rise and live forever. “I am the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live and whoever lives and be-lieves in me will never die.” The resurrection of Jesus is the Good News of the Gospel. It is the foundation of Christianity, the foundation of our faith, the foundation of our lives. “If Christ be not risen, vain is your faith, you are still in your sins, and those who have died in Christ have perished.” The Gospels were written after the Resurrection and from the perspective of the Resurrection, for without the Resurrection they have no meaning. The same is true of our lives. We must live our lives from the perspective of the Resurrection or they will have no meaning. This life is not the ultimate value. It is only the preparation for the life which really is worth living. How foolish it is to spend all of our time and energy in feathering this little nest here as if it will go on forever. “You fool, this night your life will be de-manded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?” (Luke 12: 20) May you and your family have a grace filled Feast of the Res-urrection. I will be away in India to visit my 93 old mother and hope to be back sun-tanned or more likely sun-burned in four weeks! I will visit the famous shrine of Our Lady at Vel-lankanni in South India and will pray for you all. http://www.vailankannishrine.org/

According to our human condition, everything in this world is passing away and quickly. Cultures rise and fall. Powerful states like Athens, Rome and Czarist Russia come and go. Some merit a chapter perhaps in our history books, while other receive only a page or footnote. But no matter what living conditions man finds himself in, his plight in this world is always precarious. His life is short, filled with some joy, but mostly it is a story of suffer-ing, misunderstandings, disappointments and sorrow. Men disa-gree on many things, but there is no serious disagreement about the universality of finality of death for all men and women.

We know from the revelation brought to us by Jesus Christ what the source of all man's problems is: it is sin. Sin is the cause of death and all of the human suffering that surrounds it (see Rom 5:12-21). The point of Jesus' death and Resurrection is that he has basically solved these two problems of sin and death. By his own death on the Cross he overcame sin, and by his glorious Resurrection from the dead he destroyed death in principle and restored man to life. That is what the mystery of Christ is all about.

Because of the resurrection of Jesus, therefore, this old world is no longer what it seems to be, at least for the person who has faith in Jesus Christ. The world has taken on a new face. The Resurrection is the object of our faith and the basis for our hope. Jesus is "the first-born of all creation"; "He is before all things, and in him all things hold together"; God wishes" through him to reconcile all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross" (Col 1:15-20). Because of his obedience, "God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth" (Phil 2:9-10).

Because of Jesus' Resurrection, death is not what it seems to be. It is not the end, but the beginning of a new type of life for the saved. While remaining human beings of flesh and blood, we shall all be transformed (1 Cor 15:51) into "spiritual bodies" (1 Cor 15:44). And God plans, in the fullness of time, " to unite all things in him (Christ), things in heaven and things on earth" (Eph 1:10).

Thus the Resurrection of Christ has already had a profound influ-ence on the whole cosmos. Not all men are now aware of this change, but they shall be at the end of the world. At present it is only the believing Christian who knows this truth by faith.

Paul (1 Cor.15) poses the question: what if Christ had not been raised from the dead? And he acknowledges that without the resurrection, Christianity offers no hope to hu-manity at all: no present hope; no future life. But he con-cludes: “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” And Paul shows that the resurrection of Jesus opens up the way for all of us, through faith in him, to experience resurrection life – which the Bible defines as being life-to-the-full now, and life-that-never-ends in the world to come.

In a world of much uncertainty and fear, this is the rock-solid message God has entrusted to his church. And, we are assured, once this gift of life is ours, nothing in all crea-tion can take it away from us. Fear will certainly continue to be a reality in this unstable and turbulent world. But the Christian can have absolute certainty, even through such fears, that we are safe in Christ – and that what God has started in us he will go on to complete.

CAPTURADO POR LA HISTORIA

“¡Somos testigos!”

--Peter Scagnelli
