CENTRED ON JESUS CHRIST

NOVEMBER: A MONTH TO PRAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIED

November is a month we as Catholics traditionally dedicate to praying for departed loved ones and for all who have died, beginning with All Saints Day and All Souls. There will be several occasions during this month for us to lift in prayer the souls of those we have lost including morning Masses and Monday Community Prayer. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

DEACON JOSEPH ORDAINED Last Friday evening many of us from the school and parish community went to join in a significant celebration at St Mary’s cathedral. Six people, including Fr Joseph Laundy (formerly known as Deacon Joseph) were ordained as priests. Some of the symbolic highlights of the celebration included seeing Deacon Joseph being helped by his parents to put on his priestly vestments with both Mum and Dad beaming. A hundred or more priests gave each of those newly ordained priests an individual blessing. We have been very blessed to have Fr Joseph in our school community during the final year as a deacon. He has played a very special role in our school community. The children always look forward to his class visits and his special way of making their liturgies child friendly and meaningful. As a staff we have enjoyed Deacon’s interest in speaking with each of us and benefitted from a day where he helped all of us grow in our understanding of the Mass. Whilst he may still pop in from time to time over the next few weeks, Fr Joseph will soon be leaving us to move to a new community who will be greatly blessed, as we have been, by his presence. Hopefully Fr Joseph doesn’t read this bit: This Friday we will be surprising Fr Joseph with a gift from the school community at 8.30am in the undercover area .. please join us for this 5 minute presentation!

ANSWER THE QUESTION AND WIN!!

Last week’s answer was: ‘Deacon Joseph.’ Many of our Year 1 students correctly worked out the answer. All their names were placed in a barrel and Imogen Long ended up being the prize winner! Who will figure out the answer this week? THIS WEEK’S QUESTION: What am I? I am a special event that Year 6 students will celebrate on the last week of school. There is a special little prize on offer for a student who is able to work out the answer and let Mr Maxwell know what it is:

COMMUNICATION MINISTRY This is a special column about the book Wonder – R.J Palacio The story is about a 10 Year Old Boy, August, who was born with a genetic disorder called Treacher-Collins Syndrome that left him with a facial deformity. August has been home schooled due to his multiple surgeries (27 to be exact) and complications from that. The book is mainly about the themes of bullying, reaching your potential and every individuals ability to “stand-out.” “My favourite part was when Amos took on the year 7s to defend Auggie” John The book has been read by over 6 Million people and has been turned into a feature film. This book was inspired by the author’s trip to the ice cream store with her two sons and they saw someone with Treacher-Collins Syndrome. “My favourite quote; ‘everyone deserves a standing ovation once in their life because we overcometh the world” Jasmine quoting August Pullman. The year 6 were very lucky to read this amazing book. We are all so excited to go to see the movie at the cinema next Thursday. We are also going to Timezone! Read the book Choose kindness ! WASTE FREE WEDNESDAY

The Environmental Ministry are introducing an exciting new initiative to reduce

the amount of rubbish we produce at St John Paul II. Every Wednesday we

want to encourage all students to participate in Waste Free Wednesday by

packing a rubbish free lunch. Using plastic reusable containers for sandwiches,

fruit and yoghurt is just one way to reduce our waste. Ministry members will be

on the lookout for Waste free lunchboxes and will award stickers to those who

participate.

Thank-you for your support in helping care for the environment.

VINNIES CHRISTMAS APPEAL 2017

This Christmas, we have many families in our community who do not experience many of the luxuries that we do. We are encouraging each child to bring in non-perishable food items. You could bring in tinned food, drinks or plastic-packed foods that will not go off. These should be

foods that have not been opened before. Donations are urgently required. Please bring them to your classroom by Friday 24th November. We will be using our faction houses

to help assist with what to bring along.

JOIN THE ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY VOLUNTEER FAMILY

St Vincent de Paul Society is seeking people to join their volunteer team. Your efforts will help to support their good works, such as the provision of bedding, clothing and food to those experiencing hardship, and providing shelter for the homeless. In turn, you can enjoy a range of benefits proven to be associated with volunteering, such as an increase in well-being, happiness, health and longevity! There a number of diverse, interesting and stimulating roles available, at a range of locations, on a range of different time commitments. To name a few, you could try your hand at sorting material donations, providing customer service in our retail stores, assisting truck drivers to collect donations, assembling furniture and helping with store displays. To find out more or to express your interest, call Sarah on 6323 7531
