©LPi

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE September 1, 2019 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Can you imagine if Jesus threw a party? From the wedding feast at Cana, we know he wouldn't let the wine run out. From this Sunday's Gospel, we know there would be quite a lively array of guests! We also knew who the most important people would be - eve-ryone. Jesus advises throwing a party that turns eve-rything upside down. Everyone should assume they're the least important attendee, and the guest list shouldn't include the neighborhood "who's who." Rather, we should go looking for "the poor, the crip-pled, the lame, the blind" and hope they RSVP. Jesus describes a particular posture towards our own hospi-tality. Parties are about the other people. "Do not recline at table in the place of honor." How often can small talk become a one-upmanship of job promotions, home renovations, and our children's achievements? We've all been to parties where being the most inter-esting guest is the highest achievement. Yet so often, we know the best party guests are the ones who lis-ten well to our stories. Whether we are guests or hosts, we have the opportunity to look on others with humility and awe. Parties are opportunities to serve. Jesus advises us to be careful who we invite "in case they might invite you back and you have repayment." Does Jesus liter-ally mean we shouldn't invite our friends over? Of course not! But he does invite us to special consider-ation when we offer hospitality. When we invite peo-ple over to our home, what motivates us? Who we want to spend time with? Who we'd like to impress? These ultimately have only ourselves in mind. How about asking: Who could use some extra care right now? Who could benefit from a fun evening out? In other words, who can I serve? ©LPi

JOIN US AT INFANT JESUS OF PRAGUE PARISH

Wednesday Sept 11 or Thursday Sept 12 at 7:00 pm

See the true story that will give you a new un-derstanding and appreciation for the gift of life. Whether you are a believer or a skeptic in our ability to affect the course of events in our soci-ety today, see the movie that is doing just that! Abby Johnson was a young college student who wanted to make a difference in the world. She wanted to make life better for young women and be the person providing them with opportunities to achieve their dreams. She believed that was happening as she rose in leadership at the Planned Parenthood facility in College Station Texas. The true story of how that desire was transformed to a much deeper level of under-standing can also be the catalyst that transforms your life. Make a point of seeing Unplanned at 7:00 pm on Wednesday September 11 or Thursday September 12 in the Church Hall behind the church with entrance from the church parking lot.

Arrive early for coffee and treats and stay for fellowship. You will learn of opportunities to make life better for young women and help them achieve their dreams for a better life!

Movie begins promptly at 7:00 pm. Can’t make it either evening but would like to

see the movie?

Dear St. John Parish Family, Thank you so very much for the wonderful reception after all of the Masses on July 27th and 28th to mark my last day as Music and Religious Education direc-tor at St. John. WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED

Q: What is the virtue of humility? A: In many ways, humility is the foundation of the spir-itual life. It's the virtue by which we know ourselves ac-curately in relation to God and others. Humility reminds us that we are not the center of the universe. We recog-nize that we are created beings, totally dependent on God. We are nothing apart from Him. The more we recognize this, the more we're able to open ourselves to God's grace working in our lives. The closer we grow to God, the more we can love others. Humility also recognizes that we're "on par," so to speak, with others. Made in the im-age and likeness of God, we are all equal in dignity. Growth in humility is not an easy process. It can mean accepting the humiliations and embarrassing mistakes of our life, learning from them graciously, rather than ignor-ing them or blaming others. It also means responding to those in authority with respect. We can practice humility by not bulldozing ahead or assuming our opinion or way of doing things is always right. Consider asking yourself: "I wonder what so-and-so would think of this?" It's also important to remember that humility isn't only the oppo-site of pride. It's also the opposite of excessive self-debasement. We've all experienced the negative self-talk that ignores God's gifts in our lives and in our own per-son. True humility thanks God for His many gifts... and recognizes that He was the One to give them. ©LPi

Labor Day Blessing O God, you asked St. Joseph to accept your will that his wife-to-be would have a Son. St. Joseph accepted your will and worked with Jesus as his father and teacher. We seek your blessing upon all the work of our hands, and we dedicate our work to your greater glory. We ask your blessing upon all workers, especially those who work to make our lives easier and more enjoyable. We ask all this through the intercession of St. Joseph, patron saint of workers, in the name of Jesus your Son, in the unity of Holy Spirit. Amen. St. Joseph the Worker, pray for us.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The readings today center on mindfulness, awareness of where we stand in God’s plan. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus’ presence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mystery. September’s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of summer. The Christian life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives. Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The former liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the foot of the altar’s three steps, chanting Introibo ad altare Dei, or “I will go to the altar of God,” followed by the altar servers’ response, “The God who gives joy to my youth.” Many parishioners can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once reserved for encounter with the holy, and the intimacy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink. —James Field, Copyright © J. NO SURPRISES We are told by all spiritual writers that one important point to bear in mind, as we seek to attain humility, is not to be surprised by our own faults and failures. —François Fénelon

Do you have a family member in the military, neighbor or loved one to add to our prayer list? Call the parish office to add their name to the prayer list or update the current list.

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Humility is often misunderstood as feeling inferior about ourselves and carrying around feelings of un-worthiness. For many, humility is not considered a strength of character but a negative attribute and sign of weakness. Conversely, in fact, authentic humility is found in the person who is firmly grounded in re-ality, able to be honest with him or herself, and in right relationship with others and God. A humble person understands his or her place in life and who they are. While placing themselves at the service of others, they are comfortable in their own skin and able to step aside and let others go first. Knowing our proper place in life, offering appropriate respect, and looking to the needs of others are things that will en-hance our lives and the lives of our brothers and sis-ters. Are you humble? ©LPi

¿Eres hu-milde? ©LPi
