Dear Families, Wasn’t it a terrific occasion last Saturday evening to be able to support our new Parish Priest Fr Dispin John as he was officially installed as our Parish Priest here in Mitcham. Like many of you it was the first time I had witnessed an installation of a Parish Priest and the ceremony was indeed fascinating. From all of us Fr Dispin our ongoing support and blessings to you always! May our thoughts and prayers be very much with the people of Manchester with the news of the senseless tragedy overnight.

Parish News Just a reminder that you are all invited to the 9:45am Parish Mass on Sunday – Children come and join the choir for the day and help Fr Dispin unpack the Gospel!!! There is no Parish Mass at St James tomorrow due to Prep Enrolment Interviews at the Parish House.

School News Building Works

Please note that NEXT MONDAY – 22nd MAY there will be trucks pouring concrete for our Shelter and Bin Enclosure at the Front area of our school and this will need to start before the school bell.

Students and parents walking into the school from Centre Road will need to use the Gate and path on the west side of the school.

The works for the small shelter and bin enclosure, are planned to be completed by July 3rd.

Prep 2018 Enrolment Interviews Our 2018 Prep Interviews will take place tomorrow, Thursday May 25th and Friday May 26th at ST JOHN’S PARISH HOUSE. 494 WHITEHORSE ROAD, MITCHAM.

• Each interview goes for 15 minutes and will be an opportunity for Fr Dispin and myself to chat with yourself and your child and to go through the enrolment form. Please bring your child along to the interview. Having met with us, you will then have an opportunity to meet with Maree O’Keefe our pastoral assistant.

• All siblings automatically have a place in Prep next year.

• Letters of offer for 2018 Prep will be emailed and posted in June

ALLERGY WEEK Last week was National Allergy Week, but with Family Week, we chose you leave our spotlight on allergies to this week.

Each day we have had reminders about Always taking Food Allergies Seriously.

Some of the points and reminders made have been:

• At St James we don’t encourage any child to share your food with your mates. • Always wash your hands • Know what your friends are allergic to. • If a schoolmate who has food allergies becomes sick, get help straight away! (EVEN IF THEY DON’T WANT

YOU TO) There is a brochure or bookmark coming home to each household today, which will hopefully be a springboard for further discussion.

Science Curriculum Expo is Tonight!! We look forward to seeing you all this evening from 6:30 pm -8pm as we celebrate and showcase our learnings in Science!!

RECONCILIATION – ‘The Long Walk’ Today, we and a few other lucky Year Six students went on the ‘Long Walk’ created by ex-Essendon footballer and Indigenous role-model Michael Long. It was held at Aquinas College and St James along with 40 other schools, were invited to participate. The ‘Long Walk’s’ founder Michael Long was there along with the first ever aboriginal Olympian Gold Medalist, Nova Peris. As we entered the school we were welcomed with three small pieces of wool, 1 yellow, 1 red and 1 black all tied together at the top. The Aquinas choir sang a beautiful song about how aborigines as children were taken away from their families and taken to schools where they were abused. Nova Peris had a talk with the school captains about her life whilst Michael Long talked about why he pushed aboriginal rights and how the ‘Long Walk’ was established. by Social Justice Captains Haylee and Michael

As you are aware, this year at St James we will again provide the opportunity for students in Years 3-6 to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS).

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent, quality skills-based assessment program which rewards and recognises achievement. ICAS gives you broad insights into your child’s performance across English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. ICAS (sometimes referred to as the UNSW assessments) has

been developed by Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) since 1981. ICAS evaluates thinking and problem-solving ability, not memory.

The first of these assessments is Science which will take place on Tuesday 30th May. We wish all the students taking part in this assessment well.

Lost jumper Spencer (Grade 6F) has lost his Grade 6 Rugby top. Can everyone please check if they have picked it up by mistake.

Happy Birthday Happy Birthday to the following people who celebrate this week – Rose (4C), Liam (6F), Mia (2VH), Alannah (5F), Lucas (2VH), Samuel (PN) and Lily (PN).

Have a great week Andrew Mullaly Principal

ICT UPDATE: CAN’T ACCESS YOUR CHILD’S DIGITAL PORTFOLIO?

Access is simple: 1. Type the following address into your address bar …

https://sites.google.com/site/stjamesvermontst/ 2. Ask your child to fill in their school google username and password 3. Bookmark this address for future use! 4. Ask your child to go to Google Drive and open their Portfolio folder. Easy!

Please note! PARENTS CANNOT USE THEIR OWN GOOGLE DETAILS TO ACCESS THIS ACCOUNT !!!!!!!!!

This account belongs to your child and they are responsible for its management. Also, it is far more valuable for children to be sitting with you and talking about all their wonderful work!

Many students have had their school landing page bookmarked from the start of the year and have had access to great

educational websites and games. The Landing page also has a student memo that outlines all the student events for the week ahead. (Usually updated on the weekends if Wendy isn’t too busy!)

Bookmarking our student landing page is a real winner!

St James Primary School | 24th May 2017

Recently In OSHC… Last week in OSHC, we had the theme dancing which was amazingly popular! We found out that many of us have great dancing skills and great taste in music. We had a lot of fun making up new dances and working together to create fun dance routines!

Appreciation message

We were very lucky last week to have received some new couches to replace our old ones. The Weymouth family donated some beautiful couches to our service for the children to enjoy. We all absolutely love them so cannot thank them enough for this amazing donation!

To the Weymouth family – a big thank from all the staff and students in the OSHC room for our amazing and comfy couches that we all adore. You have helped us revamp our chill our area, bringing it a new life and getting the children back into hanging out in this area regularly. Thank you for everything, especially helping us update and create new amazing spaces for us to chill our after long days at school.

Prep Parents Please Note

As we come to the middle of the year, we will be stopping walking the prep students to and from their classrooms in the morning and afternoon soon. This is something that we can make an exception for some students upon request – if you would like to talk to me about it, then come see me in the OSHC room and we can discuss this.

Thanks,

Rose Eldridge
