ST JAMES’ CHURCH, ISLINGTON N1 8PF December 17th 2017 ADVENT 3 Year B 17/45
WELCOME to everyone in Church today, especially those visiting for the first time. Please ask the nearest person to you in the pews if there is anything you need. There is
a carpeted area in the south aisle for our smallest children. A full service booklet is available and the T-loop system works well.
A collection of money is taken during Mass (see back page for giving by text). At the time of communion, please feel free to come forward to the front of Church -
either to receive communion or a blessing. Jesus invites everyone, you too! Finally, do stay for a drink after Mass if you can and say hello before you leave. If you
would like to keep in touch, please fill in a white Contact Card and we’ll respond asap.
Collect: God for whom we wait and watch; you sent John the Baptist to prepare for the coming of your Son: give us courage to speak the truth, a hunger for your justice, and grace to suffer for what is right, in union with Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

INFLUENCE This is the time of the year when the TV schedules give us various ‘personality of the year’ reviews. The American Time Magazine has done it recently, showing five women. So two questions: who would you judge to have had most influence in 2017? And second, who has made the most religious impact? I suspect you will find the second question harder than the first! Which leads us to consider the various influences on our own lives - and whether, had we lived in 1st century Palestine, we would have wandered into the desert to listen to John the Baptist? And what was his message anyway? SERVICE TIMES OVER CHRISTMAS Please take a look at the posters at the back of Church for details. The most crucial change is the combining of the 8am and 10am Masses into a said 9am Mass next Sunday morning - which also happens to be Christmas Eve!
John the Baptist stood outside society, preaching in the wilderness. What is the role of a Christian prophet today? And is anybody listening? Should they?

WHAT A BUSY WEEK! After a lovely Carol service on Sunday night (albeit de-pleted in numbers because of the snow), the Pack-Up Volunteers did themselves proud yet again with a first class roast turkey dinner on Monday for 35 members of the street community. That evening COLA-I Academy brought all their musicians for a series of party pieces. On Tuesday morning two groups of Year 2 students from New North Road Primary relived the first Christmas, dressing up as the story unfolded. On Wednesday the UCL Chamber Orchestra played Elgar and Holst and on Friday evening Yoon Chung

PRISONER OF CONSCIENCE Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, whom we thought was on the point of release, is now being charged with inciting anti-Iranian publicity. Clearly she is still being used as a tool to release hundreds of millions of pounds frozen by the British as part of an international sanctions policy. Petition for her release at www.amnesty.org.uk/actions/help-get-nazanin-home.
