Personal, Social & Emotional Development

Communication & LanguageShare stories on home/families and children’s favourite stories and rhymes. Introduce the skills for good listening and attention. Begin Letters and Sounds program at phase 1 ‘General Sound Discrimination’. Provide plenty of opportunities for children to share thoughts, ideas and news daily.

Physical DevelopmentReinforce personal hygiene routines including hand washing following outdoor play and before snack. Support children in managing clothing and fastenings including coats, pumps, Wellingtons and aprons. Introduce children to new climbing equipment. Model giving meaning to marks made, proving multisensory mark making and writing opportunities. Introduce children to the hall and begin weekly PE sessions using ‘Sticky Kids’ movement and dance program. Introduce and model the safe use of one handed tools and equipment.

Themes - ‘New Beginnings’, ’Myself’, ‘Colour’, ‘Autumn’. Introduce nursery rules and routines. Support and encourage independence throughout the setting. Model sharing, turn taking and cooperative play. Provide opportunities to talk about self, home and family.

In our Robin Hood topic we will be looking at a variety of short stories and tales. Guided Reading will see us analysing ‘Mr Stink’ by David Walliams,

focussing on the use of language, its purpose and effect.

Autumn Term will see us using a variety of stimuli to write for different purposes. We will develop our narrative writing skills alongside writing character

sketches, newspaper articles, film-scripts and letters. We begin the Autumn Term studying the tales of Robin Hood before moving on to a film-based literacy topic where we develop our own story to form a whole-class 15minute movie.

In order to demonstrate comprehension skills

across the curriculum and enhance vocabulary, we

will participate in a variety of drama sessions

including performing poetry.

We are looking to demonstrate

understanding in different parts of speech; nouns,

verbs and adjectives. Also,

we are increasing our use of

pronouns, phrases and direct speech.

In history we will be travelling back to the time

of the Anglo-Saxons to discover exactly who the early law makers were.

This is a study of a significant theme in British

History analysing developments in crime

and punishment.

We will be reinforcing our knowledge of staying safe online, especially discussing modern technology such as Xbox, iPhone and Facebook. We will

set-up and develop our own class blog focussed on communicating/networking with wider audiences. We will use iPad to retrieve, store and present

information.

As part of the Liverpool Archdiocese we will be following the ‘Come and

See’ Scheme of Work. We will be looking at; People, Confirmation, Hinduism

and Gift (Advent).

In order to enhance our creative capacity

we will work on developing drawing, focussing particularly on use of lines, tone and texture. We will

experiment with printing using a variety

of materials.

Scientific studies will encompass

discovering the basic characteristics of living

things and the basic needs their habitats

supply. We will explore the importance of

classification.

We will keep fit through enhancing existing

passing and ball control skills. This will be followed by developing the use of

our bodies to express meaning through dance.

We’re fortunate enough to receive specialist tuition as part of the

Sefton Wider Opportunities agreement. We will initially practice

the genre of Samba.

We are looking to recognise the place value of each digit in a 4-digit number, ordering, comparing and rounding numbers up to and beyond 1000. We will recall multiplication facts up to x12. Columnar methods will be developed and used for subtraction and addition. We will compare, classify and identify symmetry in shapes. Year 4 will convert between units of measure; calculate perimeter; estimate, compare and calculate measures, including money in pounds and pence. We will work on counting in hundredths; solving problems with increasingly harder fractions and show common equivalent fractions. Time will be converted between analogue and digital 12- and 24- hour clocks. Throughout all areas we will be solving 1- and 2- step word problems.

Design and Technology will be taught mainly in

the Spring Term. Skills will be contextualised within Literacy ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ topic.

Geographical skills will be taught throughout the Spring and Summer term which will be

reinforced with a residential trip to London in May, 2015.

We are examining Myths and Legends through the Michael Morpurgo book ‘Arthur, High King of Britain’. We will be studying the language used and the grammatical devices used to create atmosphere, such as similes and metaphors and the use of clauses and sentence length to enhance the atmosphere. We will draw inferences and justify these with evidence from the text.

We will be writing using various genres based on the text. such as newspaper articles, narratives, retelling a story using a different genre and writing prequels to existing stories and poems, such as ‘The Lady of Shalott.’ We will select appropriate vocabulary , understanding how choices can change and enhance meaning. When writing narratives, we will consider how to develop characters and settings.

We will discuss and evaluate how authors use language, considering the impact on the reader and ask and answer questions to improve their understanding. We will participate in discussions about books that we read.

We will be learning about aspects of grammar such as

clauses, the use of apostrophes and

identifying parts of speech. We will be punctuating direct

speech.

We will be learning about life in Anglo Saxon times, where they originated from and why they invaded, important figures and their legacy.

This will be taught through our Anglo Saxons topic and will examine how Great Britain’s counties were influenced by the settlement of the Anglo Saxons.

We will be learning about reversible and irreversible

changes, planning experiments using thermal

conductors and insulators and which materials are

waterproof. We will be examining the properties of materials including how to

separate materials.

As part of our hockey topic we are practising control skills. In gymnastics we will be practising our skills before developing sequences in pairs. We will be improving our swimming style and stamina through weekly swimming sessions.

We are enhancing our digital literacy skills, retrieving and presenting information in a variety of ways. E safety will be taught and reinforced throughout the year.

We are following the ‘Come and See’ syllabus, examining the domestic Church, life choices and Advent. We will enjoy a week long study of Hinduism.

We are working with a variety of media such as clay to enhance

our learning.

We are learning a variety of popular songs from the era of World War 1.

We will be learning how to extend our mental methods for whole number calculations. We will learn about the types of angles and how to measure and draw them using a protractor. We will measure and calculate area and perimeter of simple and compound shapes and will use long multiplication and division to solve number problems. We will compare and order fractions and decimals. We will distinguish between regular and irregular polygons and identify 3D shapes, using our knowledge to identify and draw nets of shapes. We will complete, read and interpret information.

We will select from and use a range of tools

and equipment to perform practical

tasks for purpose.

We will be spending an exciting day at CLAC, participating in a number of watersports, we will be attending a play to commemorate 100 years since the start of WWl and visiting the theatre to watch the panto!
