We just get used to the fact that we will get interrupted over and over again. Maybe it is a phone call during dinner or a knock at the door during our favorite television program. Or at work when we are trying to meet a deadline or running to a meeng, again interrupons happen. Even Jesus had interrupons. Let us look for a moment at what Jesus did with the interrupons of life. As we read in Luke 8:41-56, one day Jesus was making His way through a very large crowd of people to help a crically ill child. The only daughter of Jairos, the ruler of the Synagogue, was very seriously ill and Jesus was on his way to their house to heal her. It was a crisis moment, and just at that point a sick woman touched the hem of His garment. And how did Jesus respond to that interrupon? He stopped. He searched the crowd unl He found the woman who had touched Him. He took me to show His concern for her, to speak to her, and to assure her that it was great faith that had healed her. And then there was the me when Jesus was making His final entrance into Jerusalem. He knew what was ahead, possibly the most important hour in history was approaching. It was at this tense moment that a blind beggar called out to Him for help. People tried to silence the man, but Jesus heard him. Again, He stopped, talked to the man about his need, and He healed him. Yet another me, when the mothers brought their babies to Jesus one day for His aenon and blessing, the disciples resented the interrupon. Aſter all, Jesus had a lot of work to do, a great mission to accomplish. He had no me for the children, only the grown-ups deserved His me and concern, so the disciples thought, but not Jesus! He turned to the disciples and admonished them. “Let the lile children come to Me. Do not hinder them, for to them belongs the Kingdom of God.” And then there was the me when Jesus was preaching a sermon to a household of people when suddenly He was interrupted by a thud of falling mud which dropped to the floor in front of Him. Everyone’s eyes went to the ceiling. They saw a hole, and some men were making the hole bigger. And when it was large enough, they carefully lowered a sick man on a pallet and dropped him at the feet of Jesus. Far from being upset at this interrupon of His sermon, Jesus expressed admiraon for the great faith of these people and He healed the sick man. We see in these instances that Jesus was willing to be interrupted. He encouraged and respected the interrupons. He didn’t tell them to go away, stop bothering Him. No, He stopped whatever He was doing and gave them His full aenon. Because Jesus is God, this shows us that God is always willing to be interrupted. And how do we interrupt God today? Through prayer, prayer at any me, at any place, anywhere. And because He loves each of us as if there were only one of us to love, He does not consider our calling upon Him, or our coming to Him, as an interrupon. It is only those who do not know Jesus who say, “I hate to bother God with my problems. He is so great, and has many billions of people to look aſter, why should He be concerned about me?” But God is concerned! He was concerned for the ruler’s sick daughter. He was concerned about the sick woman who reached out and touched Him in the large crowd. He was concerned about the blind beggar and the mothers bringing their babies to Him to be blessed. Even though He was busy at each moment, Jesus did not consider even one of these encounters as an interrupon but as an opportunity to show His concern and to show His love. May those lile interrupons that we endure during the course of our own busy schedules in life be the opportunies for us to be able to bring joy to others, bring answers to yet others, and to bring the love and compassion of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to the world. Remember that when these lile interrupons occur in our lives today, whether they be that knock at the door, a phone call in the middle of dinner, a traffic jam that stops us on the highway, a long line at the check-out in the grocery store, or having to wait for a slow moving elevator, this is where God wants us to be at that moment. Turning Life’sinTerrupTions inTo

opporTuniTiesInterruptions are unavoidable, they have become a part oflife. We just get used to the fact that we will get interruptedover and over again. Maybe it is a phone call during dinneror a knock at the door during our favorite televisionprogram. Or at work when we are trying to meet a deadlineor running to a meeting, again interruptions happen. EvenJesus had interruptions. Let us look for a moment at whatJesus did with the interruptions of life.

As we read in Luke 8:41-56, one day Jesus was making Hisway through a very large crowd of people to help a criticallyill child. The only daughter of Jairos, the ruler of theSynagogue, was very seriously ill and Jesus was on his wayto their house to heal her. It was a crisis moment, and justat that point a sick woman touched the hem of His garment.And how did Jesus respond to that interruption? Hestopped. He searched the crowd until He found the womanwho had touched Him. He took time to show His concernfor her, to speak to her, and to assure her that it was greatfaith that had healed her.

And then there was the time when Jesus was making Hisfinal entrance into Jerusalem. He knew what was ahead,possibly the most important hour in history wasapproaching. It was at this tense moment that a blindbeggar called out to Him for help. People tried to silencethe man, but Jesus heard him. Again, He stopped, talked tothe man about his need, and He healed him.

presiDenT’s MessageDear Fellow Parishioners,

The Glendi is over and that leads once again into the busy fallseason of activities at your community. Please check the var-ious announcements in this bulletin of events coming up andtry to be a part of things. Your church is providing a plethoraof things to do for all ages: from the Taverna Night to pumpkincarving, Sunday School Breakfast to bible study, basketball signups and family nights, cub, boy and girl scout troops, Greekschool for youth and adults. No one can say there is nothingto do up there so why bother, no one. Most importantly wehave our faith, our faith in our salvation, our faith to come to-gether, pray together as the Body of Christ at our blessed Di-vine Liturgy, hear our wonderful Choir. Let each of us sustaineach other and strengthen our resolve to be the best lovingpeople we can be. We are all family, the St. George family,let’s participate with your family at your church.

We just finished our fall General Assembly and your com-munity continues to face the same challenges we alwaysseem to face, many demands on our limited available re-sources and a lack of interest from so many of our people.Yesterday at the General Assembly we had 34 people whobothered to take an hour to listen to the various reports onthe health of their church. We have a list of stewards in thismonthly mailing, look at the names. Is yours there? Whatabout your brother and sister, what about your adult chil-dren with families of their own, are their children in the Sun-day school? Yes, a tough question that needs to bediscussed openly not buried, we as a board have this discus-sion every month for ways to make things better to changethings up, to give everyone a reason to belong. There are noeasy answers and with St. George everyone has an opinion.While everybody is certainly entitled to that opinion let’s tryto channel our thoughts in a forward thinking positive way,the time of doing nothing has passed, if you’re reading thisI know you care somewhat or did at some point in your life,I have not given up on you, I’m simply asking you to help me,help your church of St. George. Let’s get moving togetheras a family of committed Christian people.

Speaking of Stewardship, we will be sending two letters outto finalize the commitment of those who have made apledge for 2016 and a second letter to give some otherswho have not made a pledge a final chance to do so in 2016,to help share in the support their church. I urge you if youget a letter please react in a positive way. When that is com-plete it will not be long before the pledge letter for 2017will be sent to all of us once more, to again look in ourhearts and then open our heart to our church. We have anaverage pledge of $300 and we really need to move thatnumber higher as Stewardship has moved into a more fa-miliar method of support for everyone. We can accept it inmany ways, whatever is easiest for you, Father Michael puts

an envelope in the basket every Sunday, others make amonthly deduction from their checking account or chargeit to a credit card, some do it quarterly or on a semiannualbasis, some use that first letter as their reminder and sendin a pledge for the year. Whatever works but we all need todo something if we are to continue to have the healthy com-munity we all desire, what we all deserve. A communitywith things happening, things going on in a vibrant progres-sive community, join me.

Some important dates: elections to the Board of Directorswill be on November 20th, the Sunday before Thanksgiving,that same day is a Sunday School Breakfast. Please comeand eat and exercise your right to vote.

After our Glendi comes an appreciation once again to allthose who labored for their community. We decided to trysomething a little different and have a nice coffee/luncheonafter church on Sunday, December 4th. Having it on Sundayafter church gives everyone a chance to come, we havemany people who do not want to venture out at night. So ifyou have a list of people who may not read this letter andthe notice in this monthly, please contact them and askthem to join us, maybe even invite everyone to attendchurch with you. I know I’m way out on a limb on that onebut wouldn’t it be a wonderful scene if we filled the cathe-dral up with our Glendi co-workers. Thank each other, thankour Lord for His blessings and then go to the communitycenter and pack that place too. One can only hope and prayand to borrow from “Field of Dreams” we have already builtit so maybe they will come.

I want to thank John Stavropoulos and his hard working teamfor the wonderful Taverna night just completed. Also, a bigthank you goes out to Veneta Tatakis and her dedicatedgroup of moms and dads who are doing such a great job onthe family nights, my pumpkin is real scary thanks to you all.

Let me thank all of you for putting up with me and my at-tempts to get some movement here at St. George. We arelike a large ocean liner and it can take months and years toturn and steer in even a slightly different direction. We cannever forget or thank enough those who labored for so longbefore us but this is our time and our generation to lead andwe must do everything in our power and with our God giventalents to do just that. I see nothing but wonderful timesahead and hope you wish and pray for the same for St.George Cathedral.

May you and your family have a most blessed and HappyThanksgiving, enjoy your traditions and always rememberthe church, your church that loves you and wants to be partof that family. May God bless you all and may He continueto bless St. George.

Saint Katherine, who was from Alexandria, was the daugh-ter of Constas (or Cestus). She was an exceedingly beautifulmaiden, most chaste, and illustrious in wealth, lineage, andlearning. By her steadfast understanding, she utterly van-quished the passionate and unbridled soul of Maximinos,the tyrant of Alexandria; and by her eloquence, shestopped the mouths of the so-called philosophers who hadbeen gathered to dispute with her. She was crowned withthe crown of martyrdom in the year 305. Her holy relicswere taken by Angels to the holy mountain of Sinai, wherethey were discovered many years later; the famousmonastery of Saint Katherine was originally dedicated tothe Holy Transfiguration of the Lord and the Burning Bush,but later was dedicated to Saint Katherine. According to theancient usage, Saints Katherine and Mercurios were cele-brated on the 24th of this month, whereas the holy Hiero-martyrs Clement of Rome and Peter of Alexandria werecelebrated on the 25th. The dates of the feasts of theseSaints were interchanged at the request of the Church andMonastery of Mount Sinai, so that the festival of SaintKatherine, their patron, might be celebrated more festivelytogether with the Apodosis of the Feast of the Entry of theTheotokos. The Slavic Churches, however, commemoratethese Saints on their original dates.

Dear St. George Community,We have had a beautiful autumn so far! What I love mostabout this time of year is all the color we see outside. Itmakes me really appreciate the fact we live in New England.By this point we have all settled into a new routine. Person-ally I feel like I am in the car all the time driving to school,sports, activities, play dates and everything else. Even withall that we have going on, I hope you will consider settingaside some time and joining us in Sunday School. Please in-clude Sunday School and church in your routine. We need toset a good example for our children and come to church andSunday School as much as we can. It’s not too late to join usin Sunday School!

I have said it many times in the past and I must reiterate-I amvery thankful for the teachers and staff who volunteer theirtime to prepare lessons and teach our children! I am thankfulfor all the families who participate in our program! I am es-pecially thankful for my family! Any given Sunday, my hus-band is helping me in the office or sitting with our kids inchurch so I can attend to Sunday School matters. My parentswill babysit at any given time so I can “run up to the churchto take care of a few things.” I am very thankful for a strongsupport system at church and home!

This Thanksgiving, I wish for all my Sunday School familiesthe happiness that comes from doing the things you lovewith the people you love.

Some have asked, why is it so important to bring a guest toChurch on Family Outreach Sunday. The answer is simple. Itis a vital part of our Church’s mission of salvation. Saint JohnChrysostom stressed the importance of Church attendancein the late fourth century when he said:

“Nothing contributes to a virtuous and moral way of life asdoes the time you spend here in church. Nothing can setyour lives straight and make them exactly right so much ascan your constant attendance at church and your eagerattention in listening to what is said here. What food is tothe body, the teaching of God’s word is to the soul. I begand entreat you, let us not take such poor care of ourselves;let us prefer the time we spend here in church to anyoccupation and concern. Even if our earthly blessing bemany in number and flow to us from every side, they do notgo with us to the life hereafter.”

Prayer is a form of communion between God and humanity.It is a conversation, a dialogue between us and our Creator.We reveal our inner-most secrets, requests, needs, andproblems to God, and God reveals His Will to our mind. Weacknowledge our faults and shortcomings with assurancethat He is a merciful God. In return, we experience the satis-faction of forgiveness. At times, our prayers are words ofgratitude and glorification to God for His kindness to us. Re-gardless of what type of prayer we offer, when it pertains tous personally, it is a private prayer.

Public prayer, or worship, is offered by our Church throughattendance at the Divine Liturgy. Participation in the Liturgymeans being part of the re-enactment of the birth, life,death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ, our Lord,together with common prayer, the study of the scriptures,and communion with God.

The Divine Liturgy is a Sacrament of the Church. It is a sa-cred, mystical action between God and His people. It origi-nated with the Last Supper; and the Apostles, obedient tothe Lord’s command of, “Do this in remembrance of Me,”observed it regularly. St. Paul also gives us a description ofthe Divine Liturgy in his First Epistle to the Corinthians. Be-fore the Gospels were written, Sacred Tradition provided thebasis, the authority, and the method for the observance.Words and phrases were gradually added to the DivineLiturgy. Since the beginning of the Fourth Century, however,when St. Basil compiled the present form of the DivineLiturgy, we have had no substantial changes or variations.Thus, throughout the centuries, the Divine Liturgy has pre-served its four major features.

First, it is a remembrance of the life, cross, death, resurrec-tion, and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Secondly, it is a sacrifice. “This is my body which is brokenfor you,” said Christ, and “This is my blood which is shed foryou and for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Unlike theprimitive forms of sacrifice, this sacrifice is the perfect sac-rifice offered by the only begotten Son of God.

Thirdly, it is a communion. “Take, eat, this is my body,” and“drink of it all of you, this is my blood,” said Christ. Whenwe approach the Holy Cup we receive Christ in our hearts;rather, we should say that we are received by Christ!! Wereceive forgiveness of our sins and we reconcile ourselveswith God.

Finally, it is a thanksgiving, because Christ offered a thanks-giving to God the Father before He instituted the Sacrament.Thus, whenever we receive Holy Communion, we gratefullyrecall the love of Jesus Christ, who died for us.

On sunday, november 20, 2016, we shall partake in a spe-cial Divine Liturgy. A commentary, explaining what is aboutto take place, will precede each of the five major parts ofthe Divine Liturgy. This commentary will begin right beforethe singing of the Doxology, which is at the close of the Or-thros Service. The Divine Liturgy will also take place on theSolea with Father facing the congregation, in order that youcan also see what is taking place while the commentary isbeing read. It is very important to hear all five commen-taries so please try and be on time in order that you maybenefit from the whole experience.

The Thanksgiving holiday, unique to the history of ournation, is the celebration of plenty. Small wonder! We havereceived more of the comforts of life, and more of the goodearth's riches, than any people in human history. We woulddo well to remember, however, that these blessings are notours by right; rather, we enjoy them because God, in Hisinfinite wisdom and for His own good purpose, has chosento bestow these gifts upon us. It is not this way for the restof humankind. With each and every passing day of everyyear, over 12,000 people die of starvation or the effects ofchronic and sustained malnutrition.

We ought to remember, therefore, that Christ's commandto feed the hungry and to clothe the naked is neither asymbolism nor a figure of speech. Rather, it remains anobligation that speaks to the tragic needs of our times. Weare, as Christians, not asked, but commanded, to sharesome portion of all we have with those who have nothing.We must remain mindful of the fact that to be thankful isnot merely a state of mind and a feeling of heart. Indeed, itis meaningful only when it is a call to action! Almighty Godhas not asked us merely to be thankful, He has asked us toact thankful.

Let this season of Thanksgiving, and the season ofpreparation for the birth of Jesus Christ, therefore, be for allof us a time for reflection, and a time of sharing. Let us allremember the generosity of our Creator, and let us notforget, even for a moment, that it was not without purposethat when the Lord decided who would need help, Hepermitted us to be among the givers.

noveMber 21The Entry into the Temple of the Theotokos, according to HolyTradition, this took place in the following manner: the parentsof the Virgin Mary, Righteous Joachim and Anna, praying foran end to their childlessness, vowed that if a child were bornto them, they would dedicate it to the service of God.

When the Most Holy Virgin reached the age of three, theholy parents decided to fulfill their vow. They gathered to-gether their relatives and acquaintances, and dressed theAll-Pure Mary in Her finest clothes. With the singing of sa-cred songs and with lighted candles in their hands, virginsescorted Her to the Temple. There the High Priest and sev-eral priests met the handmaiden of God. In the Temple, fif-teen high steps led to the sanctuary, which only the priestsand High Priest could enter. The child Mary, so it seemed,could not make it up this stairway. But just as they placedHer on the first step, strengthened by the power of God, Shequickly went up the remaining steps and ascended to thehighest one. Then the High Priest, through inspiration fromabove, led the Most Holy Virgin into the Holy of Holies,where only the High Priest entered once a year to offer apurifying sacrifice of blood.

Therefore, all those present in the Temple were astonishedat this most unusual occurrence. Righteous Joachim andAnna, having entrusted their Child to the will of the Heav-enly Father, returned home. The Most Blessed Mary re-mained in the quarters for virgins, near the Temple. Roundabout the Temple, through the testimony of Holy Scripture,and also the historian Josephus Flavius, there were many liv-ing quarters, in which dwelt those dedicated to the serviceof God. The earthly life of the Most Holy Virgin Motherfrom the time of Her infancy to the time of Her ascent toHeaven is shrouded in deep mystery. Her life at theJerusalem Temple was also a secret. "If anyone were to askme," said Blessed Jerome, "how the Most Holy Virgin spentthe time of Her youth, I would answer, that is known to GodHimself and the Archangel Gabriel, Her constant guardian."

But there are accounts in Church Tradition, that during theAll-Pure Virgin's stay at the Temple, She grew up in a com-munity of pious virgins, diligently read the Holy Scripture,occupied Herself with handicrafts, prayed constantly, andgrew in love for God. In remembrance of the Entry of theMost Holy Virgin Mother into the Jerusalem Temple, HolyChurch from ancient times established a solemn Feast Day.The Feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into theTemple foretells the blessing of God for the human race, thepreaching of salvation, the promise of the coming of Christ.
