CAMPUS IMPROVEMENTS-UPDATE

ENHANCING AND BEAUTIFYING OUR PARISH PROPERTY

Previously, I had indicated that last fall a Committee had been formed to address possible renovations to the campus grounds with regard to accessibility to the church and parking. In the spring, very much wanting to address the immediate safety concerns with regard to our parishioners being dropped off for church, the Committee recommended that some changes be made at that time. As our parishioners know, we moved the handicapped parking to Goble Court and replaced the handicapped area on Southway Drive with a No Parking/Drop Off Zone. This accommodation seems to have alleviated the safety concerns for our parishioners. The Committee had also discussed options to address beautifying the walk from the parking lot to the church, as well as incorporating the St. Joseph the Worker Statue and the Memorial Bricks into the landscape. Realizing that we wanted to accomplish these enhancements and also wanted to resurface our parking lots and our driveways, after soliciting three bids, we retained the professional services of Boucher & James, Inc., consulting engineers, to advise us regarding our preliminary plans and to propose a master plan for our review. To this end, our Parish Staff has been meeting with representatives of Boucher & James for the past several weeks. On July 12th, Boucher & James made a presentation to the Parish Pastoral Council, the Parish Finance Council and the Parish Staff wherein they reviewed their proposed master plan which reflected our initial ideas as well as some of their suggestions for enhancing our Parish campus. After having heard the

presentation and after having made some suggested adjustments, the next step is to consult with the Falls Township authorities and then begin to get some cost estimates for the capital improvements being contemplated. At this point in time, we are envisioning having a gathering space in the center of the lawn on the Southway Drive side of the church with walkways leading from the parking lot and from Southway Drive to the circular gathering space and also having walkways to the three entrances to the church as well as to the Memorial Prayer Garden, which will be situated on the lawn between the church and the Parish Center. The Memorial Prayer Garden will incorporate the St. Joseph the Worker Statue and the Memorial Bricks with the intention of incorporating additional Memorial Bricks in the future. We will also be incorporating four handicapped parking spaces along the church side of Goble Court. These handicapped spaces will be recessed so as to leave more room for cars to pass by. We are also contemplating an attractive walkway from the parking lot which would bring our parishioners to the gathering area on the church grounds and also another attractive walkway alongside the Father Laut building to allow for our parishioners to make their way from the church to the Monsignor Woods Hall. In addition to the resurfacing of the parking lot, there will be some trees, islands with shrubbery, the relocation of the lighting fixtures and four handicapped parking spaces. In summary, currently our tentative plans include the following:

Large plaza/gathering space on the Southway Drive side of the church including two seating walls incorporating the stones removed from the interior of the church during the installation of the stained glass window

Memorial Prayer Garden with benches incorporating the St. Joseph the Worker Statue and the Memorial Bricks on the lawn between the church and the Parish Center

Sunday, July 22, 2018 ~ The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Page 3 ~ 228 ~ Saint Frances Cabrini Parish

Five foot wide, stoned-paved walkways from the plaza/gathering space to the church entrances and to the Memorial Prayer Garden

Sloped curbing along the length of the drop off area on Southway Drive

Ten foot wide, stoned-paved walkways with lighting from the Father Laut parking lot to the plaza/gathering space near the church and continuing to the main entrance to the church

Four ADA recessed-parking spaces on the church side of Goble Court

Four ADA parking spaces in the the Father Laut parking lot

Seventeen additional parking spaces in the Father Laut parking lot

Stamped asphalt running the length of the Father Laut parking lot near the school building

Repaving of the Father Laut parking lot, Monsignor Woods Hall parking lot, the rectory parking lot and driveway

Planting islands with trees, shrubbery and relocated lighting in the Father Laut parking lot

Pedestrian connection from the Monsignor Woods Hall parking lot to Southway Drive

Sidewalk and trees along the length of Southway Drive from Goble Court to Goble Court

Realizing that we are still in the design phase, and changes are inevitable as we continue our review, for your additional information, we are pleased to enclose a Special Insert which reflects the current status of planning. We will also be placing a copy of the site plan in the vestibule of the church as well as one near the Blessed Mother side door. If you have any questions or observations, please feel free to write or call the rectory or send an email to [email protected]. Thank you very much.

SCRIPTURE READINGS

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-6

In the Old Testament, kings are often referred to as the shepherds of their people, an image perhaps associated with King David, who was a shepherd before he became king. In this passage from Jeremiah, Israel’s kings have failed in their

responsibilities for the welfare of their people. Nevertheless, there is hope in God’s promise to raise

up an heir to David who will shepherd the people wisely.

Page 4 ~ 228 ~ Saint Frances Cabrini Parish

Second Reading: Ephesians 2:13-18

Although the Second Reading normally has no relation to the First Reading and the Gospel, the first line of this passage with its reference to those who were “far off” (Ephesians 2:13), evokes the state of a

formerly scattered people, now united through the reconciling work of Christ. Gospel: Mark 6:30-34

While it is John’s gospel that specifically names

Jesus as the Good Shepherd (John 10), He is depicted in that role at the end of today’s Gospel.

The people’s special need would seem to be

guidance and teaching, for Jesus responds to them by doing so. In subsequent verses, not included in today’s Gospel, He feeds them with bread and fish.

Cathedral Ambassadors provide a personal presence in the Basilica and most importantly they put a face on the Church. Cathedral Ambassadors are assigned 4 hour shifts. The schedule is flexible with assignments of one day or more a month. Training and materials are provided to support this evangelization ministry. For more information and to become a Cathedral Ambassador, please contact Martha Ortiz, the coordinator of the Cathedral Ambassadors, at [email protected]. Parish Registration Catholics living in the Parish boundaries should be registered in the Parish. Registration is required for the administration of the Sacraments, attendance at Holy Family Regional Catholic School or PREP, and for the issuance of Certificates of Eligibility for Baptism and Confirmation. Please call the rectory to make an appointment with Audrey Wilson, Director of Parish Services, in order to register in the Parish.

Baptism Baptism is celebrated the first and third Sunday of each month at 1:00 PM. Please call the Rectory Office to make an appointment to meet with Audrey Wilson, Director of Parish Services, in order to register for the Sacrament of Baptism. Pre-Jordan classes, required for parents and godparents, are scheduled as needed in the church.

Godparents Only one godparent is required for Baptism. If two are chosen, one must be male and one female. A godparent must be a fully-initiated Roman Catholic who is baptized, confirmed, and receiving the Eucharist, and must be at least sixteen years of age and in good standing with the Church, including marriage in the Church if they are married. A baptized non-Christian may be chosen as a “Christian Witness” provided there is one Catholic godparent. A former Catholic may not serve as either a godparent or Christian witness. Godparents will be asked to have their Parish complete a form witnessing to their eligibility to be a godparent. For the Sacrament of Confirmation, the sponsor’s eligibility requirements are the same as that of a godparent.

Sick or Homebound Please contact the Rectory office to notify of a hospitalization, to receive the Sacrament of the Sick at home or to receive the Eucharist at home. If hospitalized, please notify the hospital that the patient is Catholic.

Marriage Arrangements must be made with the Pastor at least six months in advance. Please call the Rectory office for an appointment before setting the date of the wedding.

Moving Please notify the Rectory office if you are moving.
