I once asked Fr. Berchmans, a retired priest in my home diocese, “Father, what do you do these days, now you are re-tired?” He replied, “I am working on my Ph.D.” I literally be-lieved him and asked him about his dissertation. He gave a big laugh and said, “I said, I am working on my Preparation for my Holy Death!” November is the month of commemoration of the dead. On All Souls’ Day, we will be offering three Masses for the dead. It is a good practice to participate in all three Masses and visit cemeteries. In the theological understanding of human life, we take into consideration every aspect of our life. We are born. We grow up. And, we die. Right after the birth, we baptize our infants. Baptism marks the most important moment of Christian life. At Baptism, we die; we die with Christ. We participate in the one death that redeemed, reclaimed and restored the original dig-nity. We rise with Christ and begin the new life which is oriented towards eternal life. All our life is a response to the mercy that we appropriated for our lives at baptism. All our life is a life of con-version which is marked by stages that is purgative, illuminative and unitive. That is how we see Christian spiritual progress.

We also believe that our real and natural death is a definitive mo-ment. At our death God calls us unto Himself. But, our way to get joined with our loving Creator God is the same way that find in Jesus Christ who suffered and died on the Cross. Jesus’ entry into heaven, in his glorified body is our pattern as well. We do not have a different route! That is why we see all our suffering —sufferings which are on account of and by virtue of our Baptism for the sake of love — is redemptive. Do I suffer on account of my faith and love? John of the Cross says, “In the twilight of life, God will not judge us on our earthly possessions and human suc-cesses, but on how well we have loved.” Again, love is not some-thing makes us feel nice and comfortable. True love makes us be the children of God. Love and truth always go together. We love in the true sense of the word. Jesus loved everyone. His love was the pure form of love. He had compassion and mercy for so many people. And yet, he had only a few people to love him and accept his message. Jesus’ death was the most decisive death for the en-tire humanity. His death not only transformed our lives but also our own natural death. Our death has become meaningful. Our death is no longer an event of gloom and doom. We do have hope, a hope that takes us beyond the point of our natural death. For this reason, one of the central mysteries of Christian life is death. We celebrate the birth of every one of us. We moan the death of our beloved ones. But, much beyond that, we pray for those gone before us for such is our hope.

Everyone needs God’s healing mercy, both those living and those dead. May this month be a time for renewal and hope.

Mensaje por el Padre Sengole Gnanaraj

Ahora que ya tenemos una nueva misión de nuestra parroquia, sabes qué es el Kerygma? Predica el Evangelio, si fuera nece-sario usa palabras. Esta frase usulmente se le atribuyó a San Francisco de Asis, pero no estoy seguro! Porque al contrario, debemos usar palabras. Por supuesto, nuestra vida habla más de lo que hablamos o predicamos. El Papa Pablo VI diría: “El pri-mer medio de evangelización es el testimonio mismo de una vida auténticamente cristiana”. (EN 41,1975).

¿ Cuál es el contenido de nuestra predicación? O ¿ Cuál es el contenido de las buenas noticias a las que estamos llamados a dar testimonio y defender? En una oración muy sencilla, po-demos decir que el contenido de las buenas nuevas es: “Jesús es el Señor”, esta es una forma bonita y condensada del Evangelio, de hecho, el kerygma de la iglesia primitiva. Los dos grandes obstáculos o retos, ahora y en ese entonces han sido la incredu-lidad y el orgullo. Hay algunos que abiertamente rechazaron a Jesús y a su Evangelio. Obviamente, hay personas que lo hacen deliberadamente. Cualquiera que sea la situación, nuestro llamado a pregonar el Evangelio sigue siendo urgente. ¿Quién puede decir que Jesús es nuestro Señor? San Pablo nos dá una respuesta directa: Nadie puede decir que Jesús es nuestro Señor, excepto el Espíritu Santo (1 Cor 12:3). Debemos leer completa-mente lo que Jesús dijo en Actos 1:8: “Pero recibirás el poder del Espíritu Santo, cuando éste haya venido sobre tí, y ustedes serán mis testigos en Jerusalén y toda Judea y Samaria y hasta el fin de la tierra”. Entonces predicar el Evangelio tanto por pala-bra como por ejemplo de vida, es una obra del Espíritu.

No lo tomes a la ligera, cualquiera puede ser llamado por Jesús nuestro Señor. Sólo debemos de fijarnos en los actos de los Apóstoles a aprender lo que ellos nos enseñan. Ahí es donde encontramos la proclamación kerygmática inicial del Evangelio en el Espíritu.

En pocas palabras, podemos identificar tres pasajes del Nuevo Tes-tamento que nos ayudarán apropiadamente, en Espíritu, a hacer nuestra misión actual. Pueden haber otros pasajes, pero para mí, éstos son el kerygma.

Juan 3.16: “Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que crea en él, no se pierda, y tenga vida eterna. Después sigue el versículo 17 que también es muy importante. Hechos 2:38: “Arrepiéntanse y bautícense cada uno de ustedes en nombre de Jesucristo para perdón de los pecados: y recibirás en Don del Espíritu Santo. 1 Corintios 15:3-8: “Porque primeramente les he enseñado lo que asímismo recibí: Que Cristo murió por nuestros pecados, conforme a las Escrituras; y que apareció a Cefas, y después a los doce. Después apareció a más de quinientos hermanos a la vez, de los cuales muchos viven aún, y otros ya duermen. Después apareció a Jacobo; después a todos los Apóstoles, y al último de todos, como un humano anormal nacido, se me apareció a mí.

En cada misa, nosotros decimos el kerygma (proclamación apostóli-ca de la salvación a través de Jesucristo) en respuesta a “El Misterio de la Fé”. Bl. Pablo VI nos vuelve a recordar: “Evangelizar es un hecho de gracia y vocación propia de la Iglesia, es su más profunda identidad. Ella existe para realizar la evangelización, es decir, para predicar y enseñar, para ser el conducto del Don de la Gracia, para reconciliar a los pecadores con Dios y para perpetuar el Sacrificio de Cristo durante la misa, la cual realizamos en conmemoración de su muerte y gloriosa resurrección” (EN 14,1975).

Dejemos que el Espíritu Santo, en cada uno de nosotros, nos provea de la misión para traer a todos la gracia y misericordia de Cristo Jesús.

DEDICATION OF ST JOHN LATERAN Feast Day, November 9th

“Most Catholics think of St. Peter’s as the pope’s main church, but they are wrong. St. John Lateran is the pope’s church, the cathedral

of the Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome presides.

The first basilica on the site was built in the fourth century when Constantine donated land he had received from the wealthy Lateran family. That structure and its successors suffered fire, earthquake, and the ravages of war, but the Lateran remained the church where popes were consecrated. In the 14th century when the papacy

returned to Rome from Avignon, the church and the adjoining palace were found to be in ruins. Pope Innocent X commissioned the present structure in 1646. One of Rome’s most imposing churches, the Lateran’s towering facade is crowned with 15 colossal statues of Christ, John the Baptist, John the Evangelist, and 12 doctors of the Church. Beneath its high altar rest the remains of the small wooden

table on which tradition holds Saint Peter himself celebrated Mass.”

“Unlike the commemorations of other Roman churches, this anniversary is a feast. The dedication of a church is a feast for all its parishioners. In a sense, St. John Lateran is the parish church of all Catholics, because it is the pope’s cathedral. This church is the spiritual home of the people who are

the Church.”

A Return to the Garden of Eden

(Commentary on the mosaic in St John Lateran)

“In this work, the cross is Christ [and] … is flanked by Mary and John the

Baptist. Four of the other saints who flank it carry scrolls attesting to Christ's

divinity. From it flow the streams of water from which the stags are drinking,

an allusion to Ps. 42:1, "As the deer panteth after the fountains of water; so

my soul panteth after thee, O God. Most importantly, the flowing streams and

the vibrant river life at the bottom of the image (see detail) refer to Ezekiel 47,

which is read in Roman Catholic churches each year on the Feast of the

Dedication of the Lateran Basilica (November 8). In this chapter Ezekiel is

given a vision of streams flowing out from the Temple to all the land, making

it fertile and healing even the salt sea...

The central meaning, then, is that the cross of Christ fulfills the promise of

salvation made to Ezekiel, restoring mankind and indeed all of nature to

God's grace. We are again in Eden, as is also suggested by the fact that

there are four streams, like the four rivers flowing from Eden in Genesis 2:10-

14. This restoration is also suggested by the Tree of Life between the

streams, with a phoenix perched in it, and by the New Jerusalem directly

below. It is a theme is especially suited to St. John Lateran, which was origi-

nally called the Basilica of the Savior.”
