Pentecost Sunday May 31, 2020
Veni, Sancte Spiritus Come, Holy Spirit, come!
And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine! Come, Father of the poor!
Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine.
Today on this feast of Pentecost, the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of the Risen Jesus, we echo those words from the Sequence of the Mass. Traditionally referred to as the birthday of the Church, this day saw the start of the Jesus movement beyond the confines of the Upper Room, into the streets of Jerusalem and into the world. Reflect on the significance of this day. St. Thomas Aquinas asserted that Pentecost should be celebrated with the same solemnity and majesty of Easter. Our faith ex-perience is all about transformation - the change that is necessary as a disciple of Christ. We are called to walk from darkness to the Light, from sin to Salvation, from self-reliance and self-interest to Grace and Service. We are continually moving towards the ultimate transformation.
In a very few days we will be moving beyond the confines of our own Upper Rooms where many of us have been seeking refuge from the possibility of infection and the subsequent sickness. Now we emerge into the sunlight, squinting and adjusting our vision to the world we once occupied so carefree and unconcerned. Now we re-enter the world cautiously. We cannot quite pick up where we left off so many weeks ago, but we are called to move into the future. Today marks the end of the Easter Season and we begin what the Liturgical Calendar ironically identifies as Ordinary Time. It will be anything but Or-dinary, regardless of how you use the term.
One of my least favorite phrases, which I believe people tend to use as a sort of verbal hamburger helper, is a catchphrase that people think reflects on them in a positive way. Using it indicates a sort of amorphous status as a planner and an organizer. The phrase is: “Moving forward…” after which one may insert any idea that now appears to have been well thought out and valid simply because it has been pref-aced by that wonderfully facile phrase. The reason I have such disdain for the phrase is that it allows for nothing to be done now but simply accepts the status quo which will somehow mysteriously change “Moving forward.” The phrase allows for inaction now because action will take place later.
The original band of believers that seminal group of disciples did not stay in the Upper Room planning what their next step was going to be. Depending on the presence, prompting and power of the Holy Spirit they began to act boldly. That is the first definition of the Holy Spirit in Sacred Scripture – Power. This group of believers, hiding in fear after the Resurrection, emerged from their isolation em-boldened by the power that they have received and began to spread the word about The Word. They moved beyond the confines of the Upper Room and onto the streets of Jerusalem, preaching, healing, for-giving and speaking with power. As we move from the confines of our own Upper Rooms and move into the streets of our neighborhoods, eventually coming back to those places we have missed for too long a time, may we do so with Grace and Power. May we be so transformed as to be able to announce the Good News by the way we live and speak and act. Go gently. Speak kindly. Do not judge. Be grateful.
Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond
GUIDELINES FOR RETURNING TO MASS As we begin to see the glimmers of a post pandemic world and a return to some sense of normalcy, the Church will also begin to see herself emerge from the tomb of self isolation. As state and local authorities, along with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia move to the “yellow phase” of the pandemic, our parish has been preparing as well for the eventual return to the Lord’s table. This period of isolation, face masks, hand washing, sanitizing and social distancing has been disorienting for us all. We have been prevented from carrying out our lives as we normally would. However, we have made efforts and strides to continue the work to which our baptism calls us. By now you have probably heard that starting the weekend of June 5 and 6, we have been given permission to once again gather as a faith community and celebrate the Eucharist. With that return comes an understanding of how we must gather differently than before, how we will be seated, how we enter the church and receive Eucharist. Below are some things to keep in mind as we gather once again as a community.
The dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days remains in effect until restored by Archbishop Perez.
• The church doors will be opened when you arrive, or someone will be available to open them for you. The less you touch, the less likely to transfer any potential germ.
• Masses will be celebrated with provisions for social distancing and the limitations for assemblies in the initial phase. Currently we have eve-ry other row taped off with signs indicating no seating. Families and couples are welcome to sit together, but the next non family parishion-er should observe the 6 ft. distance.
• Facial masks will be required by everyone attending Sunday and weekday Masses. However, it has been directed that the presider and attending deacons will not wear masks.
• We will continue to celebrate weekday Mass in the Church.
• You will not be able to use the Missalettes.
• There will be no offertory procession. We have not yet figure out the collection but we will no longer be passing the baskets.
• The Sign of Peace and the distribution of the Precious Blood will remain suspended.
• Holy Communion will be distributed during each Mass.
• Parish Bulletins and other materials will be available for people to take for themselves.
• Baptisms, Confessions, and Marriages are to take place as usual but with due regard for reasonable social distancing and the limitation of participants according to revised norms.
• Funeral Masses and Funerals outside of Mass will take place as usual with due regard for reasonable social distancing and the limitations of participants according to revised norms.
• Lastly, we encourage you to attend Mass only if you do not exhibit any symptoms of the COVID - 19 virus (Cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, loss of taste or smell) and are presently feeling well. Caring for one another, means caring for oneself first.
More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.

St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families through the Family Promise inter-faith minis-try in southern Chester County. Due to the coronavirus pandem-ic, Family Promise is sheltering their guests in a hotel at this time, so there will be no volun-teer responsibilities at the churches. Volunteers are praying and supporting a homeless shel-ter in Philadelphia with lunches during this time. Please consider donating gift cards to Acme, Aldi
or Shop Rite, which are stores close to the hotel. Financial contri-butions would also be appreciated. Mail to: Family Promise, 1156 W. Baltimore Pike, P.O. Box 394, Kennett Square, PA 19348. For questions, please contact Kathy Silvon at [email protected] or call 484-720-8214.

The SCLS will resume our gatherings (in cyber space) on Sunday May 31ST at 2:00 PM. Our gatherings have looked at the works of Graham Green’s The Power and the Glory and selected short stories by Flannery O’Connor and two
works by C. S. Lewis Mere Chris-tianity and The Screwtape Letters. For our next symposium on writ-ers we will look at a writer who has had immense influence on Catholic social causes. Founder of the Catholic Worker Movement and convert to Catholicism Doro-thy Day became a voice for the poor and homeless through her non-violent activism. Her autobi-ography, The Long Loneliness, I think you will find both fascinat-
ing and inspiring as she recounts her journey from Green-wich Village, NY to her conversion to Catholicism. Normally we meet on the second Sunday of the month, however, following the directives of state and local offi-cials, the CDC, Archbishop Pérez and good common sense we had to postpone our usual gatherings until now. On Sunday May 31st we will have a Zoom meeting at 2:00 PM and once again pick up the happy task of exploring the impact and importance of the written word. Check the par-ish web site for the Zoom meeting information.
Eucharistic Adoration Meditation Today, during Mass, I saw the Lord Jesus in the midst of His sufferings, as though dying on the cross. He said to me, “My daughter, meditate frequently on the sufferings which I have under-gone for your sake, and then nothing of what you suffer for Me will seem great to you. You please Me most when you meditate on My Sorrowful Passion. Join your little sufferings to My Sorrowful Passion, so that they may have infinite value before My Majesty”.
(Diary, 1512). Meditation from the Diary of St. Faustina. We must not get discouraged and continue to offer up all our sacrifices and suffering and unit it to the sufferings of Jesus’ Passion. Pray that Jesus will end this virus very soon and heal those stricken by it. We will need a second Permanent Adorer, when Adoration be-gins again, for the following times on Monday’s, at 9 am, noon, 2, 3, 4 and 7 pm and on Friday’s, at 11 am, Noon, 1 and 2 pm. Please consider being a weekly Adorer for one of these times, spending an hour with Jesus in Adoration. Contact

The Ministry of Consolation A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant person/persons in their lives. The ministry honors the words and exam-
ple of the Lord Jesus: "Blessed are they who mourn;
they shall be consoled" (Matthew 5:4).
A team of three trained St. Cornelius church members are the facilitators for the consolation ministry. At this time, due to the coronavirus we are all strug-gling with, we need to put our ministry on hold until a later date can be arranged. When that date can be de-termined, we will inform our current participants. Watch this space for updates.

CRS Spotlight Over the next couple of weeks we will feature various members of our parish Catholic Relief Services Chapter, who will provide their insights as to why they have chosen to participate in this growing parish organization.)
Doug Kitson— Go back to the January 19th bulletin and you may recall the bulletin page insert that was titled “An Invitation for Change”. It was an invita- tion to be a part of something new, something that would be-come an integral part of our parish. At the kick-off meet-ing we were asked to answer the question “Why are you here?” My response was that I felt the need to engage with a
cause that reflected my religious, spiritual and sense of discipleship to those in need. I have seen and partici-pated in other charitable works, but I felt that Catholic Relief Services (CRS) could better fulfill and reflect my Catholic identity to give back, and to live the gospel values that we celebrate at Mass. The activities of our parish CRS Chapter are to help educate the parish on what CRS does and to be an advocate for those who cannot speak, both in our own country as well as for the voiceless in other regions of the world. For more information about our local CRS chapter or to attend one of our Zoom meetings, please contact the Parish Life Center at (610) 459-2502.
