What does the Carnival Countdown Clock say? Sixteen days till the kick-off on Wednesday July 13! Thanks to Sean Brennan,

there will be another spectacular Opening Night Parade, stepping off from the Parma Circle at 6:00pm and marching north on Ridge Road to the Carnival grounds. We have some new food booths this year, plus the old favorites. We will offer two bands per evening, one at each end of the lot. Check the bulletin article for details. We will award our Fifth Sellers’ Appreciation $500 prize on Sunday evening, with three $500 prizes to go

This year’s Carnival will replace the flooring in the Lower Parish Hall, help with repairs to the Charles Avenue parking lot, and purchase i-pads or Chromebooks for the use of our PCRF and Day School students.

There were twenty-seven Bishop’s Scholarships for Excellence awarded this year in our Diocese. Three of those twenty-seven were given to St Charles parishioners. So congratulations to the winners Tylor Tohati ($3,000 to attend St Edward High School); Cody Ruple ($3,000 to attend Trinity High School); Rosemary Bewley ($1,000 to attend Incarnate Word Academy). The scholarships will be given at a luncheon reception to be held later this summer on Friday, August 5.

St Charles recently established a Dismas Ministry to aid those imprisoned or in jail. Their first Dismas project was a Paperback and Magazine Collection on the first weekend of June. Thank you to all who made it such a great success! Dismas Ministry volunteers collected and sorted almost seventy cartons of books and magazines! Those have been donated to local city and county jails. Dismas Ministry is planning future projects fulfilling the corporal work of mercy commitment to assist the imprisoned.

There is a July Parish Activities Calendar in this bulletin. Please “clip-and-keep” that calendar as a handy reminder of the many things happening at St Charles during the upcoming month.

St Charles Finance Council met last Thursday, reviewed the year, approved the 2016-2017 budget, and reviewed this summer’s capital projects. Our Education Foundation Board also met last week.

St Charles has also recently established an Evangelization Commission. On Pentecost Sunday, our priests/deacons preached reminding us that we are all ministers of evangelization—not just priests, deacons, and religious—but all who are baptized. Evangelization must happen, not just in mission lands, but around Parma, in our neighborhoods, and within our church and parish buildings.

At one time parish membership was decided according to where we lived; parish lines were very strict. In recent years, parish membership has become much more fluid. People search out the style of parish that is most comfortable for them. Did you know that fifty-five percent of St Charles parish members actually live on the other side of our established formal boundaries? That means people “drive by” other parishes to come to St Charles.

But what of those who come to our church for the first time? Do we make first-timers welcome? What could we do, as parishioners, to make people feel welcome? How would you like to be treated if you visited a church for the first time? More on this later as our Evangelization Commission continues to study the question: “How could St Charles become a more welcoming parish?”

At 6:00pm on Wednesday, July 13, our 84th annual Homecoming Carnival will be kicked off again with a fes-tive parade. If you have a connection to a local business that might be interested in donating a prize or two (or more) to the contest, please drop it off in the Parish Office care of “Carnival Parade.” Finally, we are still looking for groups to march in the parade. Merici Chapel… In February we spend a great deal of money on jewelry, flowers, candy, etc, to say “I love you” to the ones we love. During this month of June when we honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus, stop by Merici Chapel & show how much love you have — doesn’t cost a thing & the rewards are eternal.
