    PASTOR’S CORNER

    SHEPHERD US, O GOD

"My sheep hear my voice, I know them and they follow me.”

How fitting it is that as we meditate on the image of the Good Shepherd this

weekend, we also celebrate Mother’s Day. Our mothers have been for most of us our

loving shepherds, co-shepherding the family together with our fathers. Picture in your mind the image of

Jesus as the Good Shepherd, carrying on his shoulders a lamb. It evokes a sense of security, gentleness,

tenderness, unconditional love and joy — the same feelings and characteristics that come to mind when I

think of my own mother. When I think of my own mother, I always think of God’s tender love.

Shepherds and sheep may not seem to be very common or relevant images in our high tech,

computerized world. And, we don’t like to think of ourselves as dumb, submissive animals. We see

ourselves as sophisticated human beings. We have an intellect and a free will, we go where we will and do

what we want. And, we don’t like sheep dogs yapping and snapping at our feet. But, perhaps, we are more

like sheep than we care to admit. Just like sheep, we seem to be oblivious of everything except the plot of

grass that surrounds us here and now. We sometimes spend all of our time feathering this little nest here as if

it will go on forever. Just like sheep, sometimes, we aren’t conscious of the ravenous wolves that surround us

in the counter-culture in which we live.

Besides our own experiences of personal wandering or being lost, we ourselves are also shepherds in

one way or another. There are people, responsibilities and relationships that are entrusted to us, to our care.

And, if those things aren’t applicable to us, we surely have that moral responsibility to shepherd our own

selves, making sure that we are directing and leading own lives towards our ultimate flourishing and the

realizations of our best potentials and gifts. How are we as shepherds, beginning with our own very self?

Do we bring ourselves to verdant pastures, or do our choices at times bring us to perdition, to wastelands?

How about our own family? Do we know our sheep, and do they know us? For parents, who have

been given the special vocation to shepherd their families, how is your “shepherding”? For parents of young

children, do you know where they go after school? Do you know their friends whom they hang out with?

What websites do they frequent? I know that it’s easier said than done, considering that many parents have to

juggle many things at the same time to keep things going. Shepherding isn’t easy because what’s at stake are

relationships, real people who at the same time have their own unique views and takes on life, influenced by

many factors and conditioned by the environment that they find themselves. For married couples, how are

    you shepherding your marriage?

As shepherds, whom do we listen to? Whose voice do we follow to shepherd us? Is it the voice of

Christ or another voice? Do we follow the voice of our conscience when it comes to important decisions,

even our political choices? The image of a shepherd was a powerful figure during the time of Jesus. Palestine

was a rocky and dangerous place, which made it almost impossible for the sheep to survive without the

shepherd. The voice of the shepherd was a matter of life and death for the sheep. As Psalm 23 describes to us

beautifully, it is the shepherd who leads the sheep to verdant pastures and restful waters and protects them

from ravaging animals. Just like Palestine during the days of Jesus, rocky and dangerous, we live in such a

time and place where too many appealing, yet dangerous, voices compete for our attention. They promise to

shepherd us to short-lived pleasures, but the long term consequences can be very destructive and damaging,

especially for our souls. Whom do you listen to — is it the voice of the Good Shepherd? And, reflecting on

the voices that we heed to, are we joyful and content? Are you willing to listen to the voice of the

    Good Shepherd? – Fr. Cary

World Day of Prayer for Vocations

    PRAYER FOR OUR SEMINARIANS

Lord Jesus, as you once called the first disciples to make them fishers of men, let your sweet invitation continue to resound:

    Come Follow Me!

We thank you for the gift of these seminarians called to serve in the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon.

Inspire them to imitate You, the Eternal High Priest, in sacrificial service to Your Church.

Grant perseverance to our seminarians. Give them the graces they need to one day serve You faithfully as priests.

May Your light shine through them to everyone they meet.

Mary, Mother of the Church, the model of every vocation, help our seminarians to continue to say ‘yes’ to the Lord

who calls us to cooperate in the divine plan of salvation.

    Amen.

World Day of Prayer for Vocations (continued)

Deacon Steven's Vocation Story (Briefly Recounted)

Every vocation begins in the Father's heart, before we even come to be. In God's goodness, I was born to a loving Catholic family, the first of six children, in Auburn, California. Two people who knew me as a child have recounted that I spoke of wanting to be a priest when I was five or six years old. The first time I remember thinking of being a priest was when I began altar serving in third grade. In fourth grade, my parents decided to homeschool my siblings and I; this proved also a chance to grow in knowledge about our Catholic Faith, and as I learned more, my love for the Faith grew. My family was active in our parish, and my siblings and I continued altar serving. Although we were part of different sports, activities, and groups (I was an active Boy Scout), attending Sunday Mass as a family always had priority.

Two of my parish friends entered a high school seminary, but I stayed at home and actually put off thinking much about the priesthood for several years--instead I wanted to become rich and own my own island, or at least own a bookstore! When it came time to choose a college, I sifted through the options looking for a school that was faithfully Catholic, where I could learn much and also find help growing in my relationship with God and discerning His vocation for me. By God's grace and some odd, guiding coincidences, I chose Christendom College in Virginia. There I flourished amid the small-yet-vibrant student body and excellent teachers. God helped me to mature in personal discipline, in deepening friendships, and finally in prayer. During my senior year, I spent time each morning in Adoration, growing in love for Jesus and asking where He was calling me to go. Though I had a crush on a girl who prayed the hour before me and who often lingered in the chapel, I wanted to give Jesus the opportunity to direct me before I charted my own course towards Marriage. And lead me He did--that November I heard Jesus' invitation in my heart to come to seminary, and I started applying.

Several times I wondered whether I had made up that call in my own mind, but each time these questions troubled me, God found a way to affirm me through others: strangers would ask me if I was a seminarian; friends and my spiritual director would encourage me in vocational discernment; a seminarian or the Vocations Office would call up just as I had convinced myself that I was not called to be a priest. . . . When I finally graduated, my bishop asked me to work for a year before entering seminary. I managed to get a job with some college friends at a pro-life, Catholic organization (The Population Research Institute). The year was a great blessing, both in the work done and in the friendships fostered, and when I entered Mount Angel Seminary to study theology in the fall of 2014, I pined for what was left behind.

Seminary has been a blessing, and I have been gifted many times over for the good things I left behind. The years at seminary have grown me firstly in my relationship with God (especially in the daily Holy Hour) and also with my brother seminarians. Though I have faced struggles and trials, there has always been joy enough in prayer, brotherhood, studies, and ministry to help me persevere. As I return to my home--the Diocese of Sacramento--it is with hope that God's plans are for the best, and that He will sustain me with faith, hope, and love in the years to come serving as His priest.

VISITING THE SICK/HOMEBOUND, or as we at

St. Cecilia call it , Communion Visitor, is one of the

oldest ministries in the Church. From the earliest days

of home services, the "ministers" would take the

Blessed Bread to those unable to attend. It continued as

a practice when church buildings were built. The

tradition continued with Deacons who would visit with

food and the Eucharist. Our Church today recognizes

this ministry as one of its most important. The

"Extra-ordinary Minister to the Sick" is the Face of the

Parish, the living witness that the community of faith

and worship has not forgotten the absent sick, the

invisible elderly or the unseen sufferers.

During Lent, we dig deep into our hearts to find new

ways to love and serve the Lord through service and

prayer. Do you have 1 extra hour a week to share, to

give that service, with companionship and faith to a

fellow parishioner. We need one-on-one home visitors,

care center Communion service leaders, and team

    members for group visitation.

    10:45AM MASS CHOIR

I am very pleased to announce that we have hired a new Music Director for our 10:45AM Mass. Her name is

Lourdes Johanson. Lourdes holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance. She also finished a Master of

Music in Music Theory from the Indiana University School of Music, Bloomington, Indiana.

She started her piano studies at 3 years old, and all throughout childhood and her young adult years, piano

performance was the driving force in her life.

Lourdes has an extensive experience in music. She was the Director of Music Ministry and Liturgy

Coordinator at St. Paul Catholic Newman Center at the Indiana University.

Lourdes met her husband, Michael (a composer), while both were graduate students at IU. They were married

in 2000 and their son, Ethan, was born in 2002. They moved out west in 2004 when Michael accepted a

teaching position at Lewis & Clark College.

The Johanson’s are members of St. Clare Parish in SW Portland where Lourdes served as Choir Director from

2005-2011. She resigned from active ministry to spend more time with her family especially during her son’s

formative years. However, she continues to direct the children and youth choirs for the monthly parish Family

and Youth Masses. She is also the song leader and accompanist at one of the Masses at St. Francis in

Sherwood. Lourdes also maintains a private piano studio at home.

I would like to invite EVERYONE who is interested to be part of our 10:45am choir. Practices are on

Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30pm in the church. May the good Lord who has begun the work in

    us bring it to completion.

Trump Administration Strengthens Religious Freedom Again! From the USCCB

We have good news about conscience rights in health care! A year ago, we asked you to submit comments in support of

proposed new rules to ensure that laws passed by Congress protecting longstanding conscience rights in health care will

be fully enforced. Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights finalized those rules!

The rules will protect health care providers, individuals, and entities from having to provide, participate in, pay for, or refer for

services which violate their conscience. This includes ensuring that nurses, doctors, or medical students cannot be forced to

participate in procedures that violate their religious beliefs or moral convictions – including procedures like abortion,

    sterilization, or assisted suicide.

The new rules will also ensure that churches and others who oppose abortion are not compelled

to cover elective abortion in their health plans.

Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB)

Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Chairman of the bishops’ Committee for

Religious Liberty, issued a statement commending the new regulations.

Roger Severino, Director of the HHS Office for Civil Rights said, “Finally, laws prohibiting government funded discrimination against conscience and religious freedom will be enforced like every other civil rights law. This rule ensures

that healthcare entities and professionals won’t be bullied out of the health care field because they decline to participate in

actions that violate their conscience, including the taking of human life. Protecting conscience and religious freedom

not only fosters greater diversity in healthcare, it’s the law.”

It is important for us to thank the Administration for their important and helpful efforts to protect conscience rights.

You can send a note of thanks to HHS Secretary Alex Azar, using the USCCB website:

PALABRAS ALENTADORAS EN SUFRIMIENTO y PERSECUCION

    quitas el pecado del mundo, atiende nuestra súplica; tú que estás sentado a la derecha del Padre, ten piedad de nosotros;

    ORACIÓN A SAN MIGUEL ARCÁNGEL

AMEN.
