“PUT OUT INTO THE DEEP”
No matter how many times I have heard the gospel story for this weekend, there’s
always something new and refreshing that can be discerned or drawn from it.
Let’s first lay down the context of the story.
Jesus was in the process of choosing or calling his closest collaborators, his disciples. It was pretty
bold for Jesus to get into the boat of Simon without saying any word. Simon was gracious enough to allow
Jesus to use his boat as a pulpit. We were told that Jesus taught the crowd from the boat, and when he was
finished, he asked Simon to lower the nets.
At this point, Simon was not yet part of Jesus’ band, telling us that apart from Jesus, to belong outside
the circle of Christ is to miss something truly significant. “No catch” implies barrenness, non-fulfillment,
emptiness, desolation or even death. Simon’s pleading to Jesus to leave him alone after the great catch is a
striking definition on this emptiness too: “Depart from me for I am a sinful man.” Sin makes us unfruitful,
renders us empty.
But, Jesus is willing to change that. His invitation to Simon to become a “fisher of men” is an
invitation from focusing on “fish”, meaning what is material, earthly and worldly, to that of “men”, meaning
that what is truly important, like relationships and people, highlights the fact that to follow Jesus requires the
reordering of priorities and rearrangement of values.
By virtue of our baptism, we too are being called to be fishers of men, to reorder our focus from fish
(from what is material and passing) to men (to what is lasting, important and essential that brings authentic
joy).
Have you made the transition already – from fish to men? – Fr. Cary
We are Fourth Grade students at St. Cecilia School. We would like to share with you
our learning in Religion class and our adopted priest, Father Vincent Cunniff. In Religion,
we learned about Jesus, Mary, the disciples, and many other role models throughout time.
One of the most important lessons we learned is about the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is
very important since it gives us wisdom, knowledge, and understanding which is very useful
when we have a test!
One thing that really stood out to us was Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Mother
Joseph knew that a good education made good citizens, so she made Catholic schools!
Mother Joseph did many good deeds to all, just like our adopted priest, Father Cunniff.
Our 98 year old adopted priest, Father Vincent Cunniff, had a very amazing life.
When Father Cunniff was young, he was in World War II. He wanted to be a pilot,
but instead, he became a bombardier. During a bad incident during the war, he prayed that
if he came out alive, he would become a priest. We have been sending letters to him for
three months. Two of the things we remember him saying are: “Remember prayer works
both ways” and “The voice of God is not like getting hit over the head — it is a quiet voice
in our soul.” We can all learn from the wisdom of the Holy Spirit and Father Cunniff!

In the Gospel today, the disciples decide to leave
everything to follow Jesus. We are also called to
follow Jesus, who tells us that “whatever you do to
the least of mine, you do for me.”
Your gift to the poor can bring the love and peace
of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt,
loneliness and dread.

JESUS I TRUST IN YOU
Did you know that we have been
praying the Chaplet of Divine
Mercy for the sick, dying and
pro-life causes since
February 2011?
Saint John Paul II imparted two Apostolic Blessings for those
who will pray the Chaplet during Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament. Copies of these blessings are hanging in the
anteroom to the Adoration Chapel. One blessing is for those
who pray for the sick and dying; the other blessing is for those
praying for pro-life causes. The Apostolic Blessings extend
indefinitely to all those who participate.
WHY SHOULD WE PRAY FOR THE SICK AND DYING?
Jesus told St. Faustina: “Pray as much as you can for the
dying. By your entreaties obtain for them trust in My mercy,
because they have most need of trust, and have it the least. Be
assured that the grace of eternal salvation for certain souls in
their final moment depends on your prayer (Diary, 1777).”
“My daughter, encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have
given to you. It pleases Me to grant everything they ask of Me
by saying the chaplet . . . Write that when they say this chaplet
in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father
and the dying person, not as the just Judge but as the merciful
Savior (Diary, 1541).” (Note: Per St. Faustina it is not
necessary to be physically present at the bedside of the
dying person).
Please join is every Monday night at 7pm in the Adoration
Chapel to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy for the sick, dying
and pro-life causes.

DOMINGO #5 DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO
FEBRERO 10, 2019
LLAMADO Y PROMESA
venerarlo, y traerle nuestras preocupaciones y
peticiones. Es un lugar de respeto y, generalmente,
SILENCIO. Este silencio es nuestro reconocer a Aquel
en cuya presencia estamos, primero y antes que nada;
sacramento, y AYUDEMOS A NUESTROS HIJOS a
hacer lo mismo. Pero YO debo poner el ejemplo.
SÁBADOS: ENSEÑANDO A REZAR A NUESTROS
HIJOS
respondido a mi llamado!” Febrero 25, 2015.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 10, 2019
FIRST READING ~ ISAIAH 6:1-2A, 3-8
In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne, with the train of his garment
filling the temple. Seraphim were stationed above.
They cried one to the other, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!"
At the sound of that cry, the frame of the door shook and the house was filled with smoke.
Then I said, "Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among a people of unclean
lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!" Then one of the seraphim flew to me, holding an
ember that he had taken with tongs from the altar.
He touched my mouth with it, and said, "See, now that this has touched your lips, your wickedness is
removed, your sin purged."
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?" "Here I am," I said;
"send me!"
RESPONSORIAL PSALM ~ PSALM 138:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 7-8
In the sight of the angels I will sing your praises, Lord.
SECOND READING ~ 1 CORINTHIANS 15:1-11
I am reminding you, brothers and sisters, of the gospel I preached to you, which you indeed received and in
which you also stand. Through it you are also being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you,
unless you believed in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ
died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures; that he was buried; that he was raised on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures; that he appeared to Cephas, then to the Twelve. After that, Christ appeared to
more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. After
that he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one born abnormally, he appeared to me.
For I am the least of the apostles, not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But
by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me has not been ineffective. Indeed, I have toiled harder
than all of them; not I, however, but the grace of God that is with me. Therefore, whether it be I or they, so
we preach and so you believed.
GOSPEL ~ LUKE 5:1-11
While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and listening to the word of God, he was standing by the Lake of
Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were washing
their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a short distance
from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished speaking, he
said to Simon, "Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch." Simon said in reply, "Master, we
have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets." When they
had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners
in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that the boats were in danger of
sinking. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said, "Depart from me, Lord, for I am a
sinful man." For astonishment at the catch of fish they had made seized him and all those with him, and
likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of Simon. Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be
afraid; from now on you will be catching men." When they brought their boats to the shore, they left
everything and followed him.

V DOMINGO ORDINARIO ~ 10 DE FEBRERO 2019
GLORIA
Amen.
PRIMERA LECTURA ~ IS 6, 1-2a. 3-8
ORACIÓN A SAN MIGUEL ARCÁNGEL
AMEN.

Padre Nuestro
En el mar he oído hoy
Señor tu voz que me llamó
y me pidió que me entregara a mis hermanos
Esta voz me transformó
mi vida entera ya cambió
y solo pienso ahora Señor en repetirte
Estribillo Padre Nuestro, en ti creemos
Padre Nuestro, te ofrecemos
Padre Nuestro, nuestras manos de hermanos
Cuando vaya a otro lugar
conmigo te quiero llevar
a mi familia, mis amigos y seguirte
porque tú eres el amor
porque tu nombre es la verdad
porque jamás me cansaré de repetirte
Estribillo
Cuando miro alrededor
Señor me cuestra comprender

Tu has venido a la orilla
No has buscado ni a sabios, ni a ricos
Tan solo quieres que yo te siga
Estribillo Señor, me has mirado a los ojos
Sonriendo, has dicho mi nombre
En la arena, he dejado mi barca
Junto a ti, buscaré otro mar
Estribillo
Tu necesitas mis manos
Mi cansancio que a otros descanse
Amor que quiera seguir amando
Estribillo
Tu pescador de otros mares
Ansia eterna de almas que esperan
Amigo bueno que así me llamas
Tomado de la mano
Si Jesús, me dice:
