THE DEMANDS OF DISCIPLESHIP Today we encounter readings that already have a Lenten feel about them. Nineveh undergoes a forty-day fast, the psalmist reminds us that God alone can show sinners the way, Paul shows us how fleeting the things and events of this world are, and Jesus cries out “Repent!” before he calls his new followers. “Come after me,” Jesus says, but if we are to truly live out the commands and demands of our discipleship through baptism, we must first know our need for conversion, our repentance, our need to believe in the gospel fully. Today’s Gospel opens with the stark reminder of what befell John the Baptist for com-pletely living out his vocation as the herald of Christ and the gospel: he was arrested, imprisoned, and martyred. Though few of us will experience consequences that extreme, we must all be ready to risk some sort of rejection as, heeding the call of Jesus, we live out the kingdom of God at hand, repent of our sins, and believe in the good news of salvation. January 21, 2018 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.” - MARK 1:17 Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all Chris-tians! The call is in the here and now, in our present circumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much bet-ter plan in store for each of us.

Help Needed One of our parishioners is desperately seeking a reliable used vehicle. She is able to make small monthly pay-ments. If you can help please call Rindy at 912-441-6409.

All mighty God, giver of all that is good. We thank you for the precious gift of hu-man life. For life in womb, coming from your creative power. For the life of chil-dren, making us glad with their freshness and promise. For the life of young people,

hoping for a better world. Like Blessed Mary, may we always say yes to your gift. May we defend it and pro-mote it from conception to it's natural end and bring us at last oh Father to eternal life, in Jesus Christ our lord. AMEN

The Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle January 25 Saul was upset by the early Christian Church, believing that the early Christians had broken away from their Jewish tradi-tions. He actively persecuted the Church in Jerusalem. As the first Christian martyr Stephen was being stoned to death, Saul

watched the cloaks of the persecutors (Acts 7:58). Paul then traveled to Damascus to further persecute early Christians. On the road to Damascus Saul had an encounter with the Risen Jesus Christ (Acts of the Apostles 9:1–19, Galatians 1: 13–14). Jesus asked, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” Paul re-plied, “Who are you, sir?” Jesus responded, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting” (Acts 9: 4 – 5). Jesus then sent Saul into Damascus to wait for further instructions. Saul was shaken and blinded by the experience. When a Christian named Ananias came and baptized Saul, his blindness went away. As a result of this encounter Saul became a follower of Christ. He was now convinced that fellowship with the risen Jesus Christ, not the ob-servance of the Law, was all that was needed to receive God’s promise of salvation. (Galatians 1:11–12; 3:1–5) Saul, whose name now became Paul, went to Jerusalem to consult with Peter (Galatians 1: 18). After his first missionary journeys, Paul was called by Jesus to pro-claim the Gospel to the Gentiles. He spent the rest of his life journeying on his missions, establishing local churches, and writing to them when he heard of their accomplishments and failures. Paul’s letters are the ear-liest records of the life and history of the early Church. As inspired by the Holy Spirit Paul’s letters are part of the Canon of the New Testament. As a record of the happenings in the early Church they are in invaluable record of the expansion of the Christianity.

SAVANNAH—St. Frances Cabrini School, a Catholic ele-mentary school, will close at the end of the current school year due to a decline in enrollment. The announcement was made by the Diocese of Savannah, which operates the school, located at 11500 Middleground Road in Savannah. With a steady decline in enrollment at the school over the past six years, St. Frances Cabrini Parish has been unable to manage the financial impact of the decrease in tuition collec-tion. “With direction from the parish Finance Council, the Office of Catholic Schools and approval from Bishop Hart-mayer and after careful review and prayerful discernment, it is with a heavy heart that it has been decided to close St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School at the end of the current school year," said St. Frances Cabrini pastor Fr. Gabriel Cummings. He added, “For 18 years, St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School has provided students with a Christ-centered environment that has powered their potential. We are proud of and grateful to the faculty and staff for their dedication and service to St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School and to the greater St. Frances Cabrini Church community for all they have done to support its mission through time, talent and treasure. For the remainder of the school year, teachers and staff will continue to provide students with the very best reli-gious and academic education.” Catholic Schools Superin-tendent Michelle Kroll said, "In the eighteen years that St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School served our community, the numerous students and families that have benefited from the excellent Catholic education and faith-filled community will only be measured by the impact of their service and contri-butions to our community and the world. Saddened though we may be at the closing of the school, we celebrate the gifts St. Frances Cabrini has provided to students, families and the community." St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School opened its doors to students in grades PK and K in Fall 2000 after hard work and dedication from St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church’s pastor at the time, Father Francis (later Monsignor) J. Nelson, and parishioners. Adding a grade each year, in Spring 2009 the school graduated its first class. St. Frances Cabrini Catholic School will partner with St. James Catholic School to ensure that all current students wishing to continue their faith-based education will be welcomed with open arms to the Charger family for the 2018-2019 school year with the opportunity to tour the facility and ask questions.
