January 22, 2017 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time “He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed Him.” - Matthew 4:22 Just as Jesus called the first apostles, He calls each of us to follow Him, too. Not everyone is called to leave their business or family behind, but we are expected to put God first in everything. Everything from our time in daily prayer, our talent in participating in one of our parish ministries and our treasure to support the finan-cial needs of our parish mission. In our modern day--it is overwhelming to think of actu-ally always putting God and His Will first in our lives. And yet the Apostles/Disciples did just that. Believe it or not that type of commitment is needed today-at least claiming allegiance to God and His Will and Desires first. Just as a brief reminder: The first Apostles actually died for their faith in Christ.--Matthew suffered martyrdom by being slain by a sword in a city in Ethiopia--Mark expired at Alexandria, after being cruelly dragged through the streets of that city--Luke was hanged upon a olive tree in the classic land of Greece--John was put in a cauldron of boiling oil, but escaped death in a miracu-lous manner, and was afterward banished to Patmos--Peter was crucified at Rome with his head downward--James, the Greater, was beheaded in Jerusalem--James, the Less, was thrown from a lofty pinnacle of the tem-ple, and then beaten to death with a fuller's club--Bartholomew was flayed alive--Andrew was bound to a cross, whence he preached to his persecutors until he died--Thomas was run thru the body with a lance in the East Indies--Jude was shot to death with arrows--Matthias was stoned, then beheaded--Barnabas of the Gentiles was stoned to death at Salonica--Paul suffered various tortures and persecutions--and lastly was be-headed at Rome under Nero. - (adapted from CHRISTIAN INDEX)

And Kim Polote, Her much-anticipated third cd recorded in Nashville was recently released. This musical project entitled "CHANGE" is one of inspira-tional impact with a profound message as well as a call to action for each and every one of us to unite and love one another. Catholic Focus There is a class for Adults of all ages that is held at 9:30 am in the Catholic Focus room in the Faith Formation Building. So please consider joining us. Mandatory second-grade retreats

All second graders and their parents must attend a First Reconciliation Retreat on Saturday, Feb. 25, from 9 am to 11:30 am in the Faith Formation building to prepare for First Penance on Feb. 26. If you must bring other children in the family to the retreat, please let Linda Santos know as soon as possible so we can make arrangements for nursery care.

There will also be a First Communion Retreat for second graders on Saturday, April 22, from 9 am to 11:30 am. Please plan to attend both these activities so that your child may receive First Communion on April 30.

No class on Presidents Day weekend

Faith Formation classes will not meet on Sunday, Feb. 12.

Youth Question of the Week ARE CATHOLICS CHRISTIANS?

Next Baptism Class, Sunday, January 29, 2017 St. Boniface’s next baptism class will be held on Sunday, January 29, 12:30 – 3:00 PM; sign up for the class by Sunday, January 22. Answer: YES! Because you may hear this question at some point, it is important to know the answer. Catholics are Christian, as are Protestants and Eastern Orthodox Christians. A Christian is some-one who professes the belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He is Lord and Savior of mankind.

LIBERATION AND REFORM While you might have to reach for an atlas to determine that Isaiah is speaking about Galilee, today’s first reading (part of which was read at Christmas) is prophetic of Jesus’ future ministry in that province. The light that brings salva-tion and rejoicing is, ultimately, Christ. Liberation is the theme: liberation from both ignorance (“darkness”) and sin (the “yoke”). As Isaiah identifies a place, so Paul describes an attitude: the attitude that develops, even among good people, of equating their own will with the common good. This al-ways brings dissension, and so it has done in Corinth. Paul will not allow this; we are all members of “Christ’s party.” The gospel is not to divide us. Matthew quotes from Isaiah in today’s Gospel, presenting Jesus as the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecies. The theme is “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17).
