SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR KIDS

Vacation Bible School June 12-16

Summer Camp June 19 - August 4

Today’s readingsFirst Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11).Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104).Second Reading — In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13).Gospel — Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23).The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disciples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus’ post-Resurrection promise, recounted in today’s Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus’ followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church’s greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!” (Psalm 104:30). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Stop by the Rectory Office to fill out a registration form if you are new to the area or the parish. It only takes a few minutes, then use your envelopes to support your parish community. Remember your donations are tax deductible and will be fully credited to your account.

Pope Francis plans Pentecost celebrations with charismatics and Pentecostals This is the logo for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal held in Rome May 31 to June 4. (CNS/courtesy Catholic Charismatic Renewal) VATICAN CITY Pope Francis has invited thousands of Catholic charismatics and members of Pentecostal and Evangelical churches to Rome to celebrate Pentecost and mark the 50th anniversary of what became the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

The pope will lead a prayer vigil June 3, the eve of Pentecost, at Rome’s Circus Maximus, an open field that was the site of an ancient Roman stadium used for chariot races. Participants will join the pope the next morning for Pentecost Mass in St. Peter’s Square.

In 2014, Pope Francis had invited charismatics and Pentecostals to Rome in 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Catholic charismatic movement, which traces its origins to a retreat held in 1967 at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. The anniversary event is being organized by the Vatican-based International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services. The jubilee celebrations began in Rome on May 31 with prayer meetings, a youth festival, meetings for theologians and workshops.

“Pope Francis asked us to plan a jubilee that is as inclusive as possible,” particularly by including other Christians who also emphasize the importance of baptism in the Holy Spirit, said Michelle Moran, president of International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services. According to Moran’s office, the Catholic charismatic renewal is present in more than 200 countries and has reached an estimated 120 million Catholics.

Meeting with charismatics and Pentecostals in 2014, Pope Francis admitted he was not always comfortable with the way they prayed, but he knelt on stage as they prayed for him and over him by singing and speaking in tongues. “In the early years of the charismatic renewal in Buenos Aires, I did not have much love for charismatics,” the pope had explained. “I said of them: They seem like a samba school.” But little by little, he said, he came to see how much good the movement was doing for Catholics and for the church.

Our own Charismatic prayer groups invite you to join them for prayer, scripture sharing and teachings on the Holy Spirit to help you grow in your relationship with the Lord:

e fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe in 1989 gave the Catholic Church the freedom to worship openly once again, but much of the infrastructure of the Church was gone. is created great challenges and still presents many complications for the Church today as she supports the spiritual lives of those who live in this region. Your support of the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE) is strengthening the life of the Church and building the future for those who live there.

After the fall of communism in Romania, virtually none of the Greek Catholic churches that were con scated by the communist regime were recovered. As a symbol of the sacri ce of their ancestors, the Eparchy of Cluj-Gherla began construction of the Cathedral of the Martyrs and Confessors of the Twentieth Century in the city of Cluj-Napoca in 1992. With your support of the Collection for CCEE, the cathedral is on target to be completed in 2018. It will serve not only as a place of prayer but also as a location for pastoral care—hosting a library, conference hall, and activities for children and youth, as well as an exhibition of the history of the eparchy. Your support of this collection is providing a place of prayer, gathering, and learning for the people of this eparchy.

Please be generous in the collection this year. More information about the Collection for CCEE and the projects it supports can be found at www.usccb.org/ccee.

Congratulations to our St Bartholomew CCW Woman of the year Kathleen Williams!

Thank you for all the tasks you have taken on over the years and always a job well done.

You have earned many blessings through your generosity of time and talents.

The Spanish Legion of Mary has undertaken to clean the church on a monthly basis and just had the floor in the church professionally cleaned. Thank you and God bless you for this commitment your group has undertaken for our parish and our Lord.

The Council of Catholic Women had the seating in the church professionally cleaned for our Easter celebration. As we close the Easter Season with Pentecost today, we wish to thank them the women of the Council for their commitment to our Parish. May God continue to bless you.

O Seigneur, envoie ton Esprit...

...qui renouvelle la face de la terre. Psalm 103
