Dear Families and Friends of St Augustine’s School I am very excited to be back at St Augustine’s as Acting Deputy Principal. With Josette Charles taking on the role of Acting Principal at St John the Baptist Catholic School at Plympton, the Catholic Education Office called for ‘expressions of interest’ from people to replace her as Deputy Principal for the first two terms of this year. When I saw the request I was instantly excited and immediately put my expression of interest together. I was over the moon when they called me and offered me the position. I taught at St Augustine’s in the 1990’s and was then the Religious Education Co-ordinator before leaving at the end of 2004. While it has been 10 years since I was last here, the St Augustine’s community has always held a special place in my heart. When I walk around the school I see some familiar faces, and a lot of new ones. There are a few parents I recognise as their younger children are now towards the end of their time here, but after 10 years, all of the students are new to me. There has been much demolition and building undertaken since I was last here, creating wonderful learning spaces for your children. Learning and teaching continues to change and evolve, and if some of us remember back to our own school days, that is probably a good thing! The developments in our understanding of how we learn best, and therefore how our children learn best have led to classrooms and teaching practices that may be unrecognisable to us. None of this is done lightly. We are all here for the best learning outcomes for your children, and the wonderful learning spaces here at St Augustine’s, with the awesome teachers and support staff, mean that your children are the beneficiaries of state of the art best practice in education. This is a wonderful place to be, and all members of the St Augustine’s community are truly blessed. I have come to your community from my role as a Religious Education (RE) Consultant at the Catholic Education Office. I have worked with many of the

current St Augustine’s staff when presenting courses they have attended. Part of my role as an RE Consultant was to work with teachers in the religious domain, including delivering a Graduate Certificate in Catholic Education through UniSA. I also presented other Professional Learning Workshops including one hosted here at St Augustine’s in January. I look forward to getting to know you over the next two terms. Please say hello to me in the yard as we work together for your children. If my first week is anything to go by, this truly is a ‘welcoming community’. Warmest regards

Kerri Dent

SR ANNE HOWARD In the last Newsletter, we advised of the passing of Sr Anne Howard (Mother Augustine), the first Principal of St Augustine’s. Below is a tribute to Sr Anne by Helen O’Brien, Acting Director CESA, former teacher at St Augustine’s and member of the Salisbury Parish. 2015 SPORTS CO-CAPTAINS We congratulate the following co-captains of the relevant Sports Houses for 2015: DOMINIC Zac A & Holly B JOSEPH Taylor M & Liam K MacKILLOP Bradley A & Nedene P THOMAS Ruben C & Keeley S REMINDERS:

Term1 Volunteer Induction – Monday 16th & Tuesday 17th February This is a requirement to be a volunteer. Please attend either the 2.00 pm on Monday or 7.00 pm on Tuesday session – see Return Slip in this Newsletter. The next session is in Term 2. School Uniform We have noticed a lot of very colourful and fluoro sports shoes coming into school. Whilst we understand that children enjoy wearing this attire, it is not school uniform and we encourage parents to buy as close as possible to predominately white sports shoes for school and leave the very colourful varieties for the fashionistas on the weekend and after school. Thank you to

those parents who have come to see us about variations on medical grounds. With nearly 650 children at this school it is absolutely essential that children’s uniforms and property are clearly marked with their full name. Public Toilet Facilities Parents are reminded that student toilets are for students only. If you or you have a toddler who needs to use the toilet, please avail yourself of the disabled facility located on the northern side of Siena Hall adjacent to the Administration office. FAITH JOURNEY Yesterday (Wednesday) I attended Mass in our church for “World Day of Prayer for the Sick”. This special day is celebrated on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and people who are sick were able to have a special blessing and anointing with Chrism. One of our Year 5 classes attended as did some parents, grandparents and children who wanted prayers or to be anointed. We thank Father Tong and Father Roderick for concelebrating this Mass. Reminders Year 6/7 Mass – Friday 13th – 9.30 am in the Church. Sacramental Program – Saturday 14th (4.00 pm) & Sunday 15th (10.15 am) February This is our first get-together for the year and our focus will be on The Church. Please let Louise Svensdotter (8281 9603) know if you are unable to make either of these sessions. Lent Starts next Wednesday 18th with the Ash Wednesday Mass in the church for Years 2-7. The Reception / Year 1’s will have a liturgy for the distribution of the ashes. Free Pancakes & Mask Parade Next Tuesday we will be celebrating the coming of Lent with a “Carnevale” type mask parade at 9.15 am and free pancakes after that. If you have a Police Clearance and can help with pancakes, please see Raymond Camilleri or Wendy Barnes. Blessings & Peace

Sr Anne Howard (Mother Augustine) Parishioners who have lived for some years in Salisbury may have read that Sister Anne Howard OP, better known to the early Salisbury Catholic Parish community as Mother Augustine, died on Monday at Tappeiner Court, Kensington. She had been a resident at Tappeiner Court for several years following a rich and varied life and service to the Dominican Sisters and Catholic schools. Sr Anne was the foundation Principal of St Augustine’s Parish School in Salisbury and Superior of the Convent throughout the early years. She was well known, loved and respected in the parish and maintained strong friendships with many of the early parishioners and families. Sr Anne was at the forefront of building community and ensuring that the education experience of those first students was the best that it could be. A young woman at the time, she had a wisdom and understanding of children and the reality of family life that was perhaps beyond her years. She was a great support to the young priests who came to the parish and were trying to find their feet in new and perhaps overwhelming circumstances. She had a marvellous memory and when meeting Salisbury residents in much later years would enquire about the wellbeing and lives of the children and families she had known many years before. Many of the first students, as adults, remember Mother Augustine as she swept across the oval, from the convent to the school, habit, veil and Rosary beads flowing. She was a larger than life person who always had a great love of life. After leaving St Augustine’s and the Salisbury Parish, against which all future experiences were matched (often not favourably) she went to St Dominic’s Priory College as Prioress and taught in the school, then to Findon as Principal of Our Lady of the Manger, which went to Intermediate only; Siena College not being established until 1971. Her next role was two terms (8 years) as Provincial at the North Adelaide Convent (Corpus Christi Province), and on to many other commitments both within and beyond the Church over time. Unfortunately in her later life her health and memory deteriorated, hence her final placement in care. Sr Anne Howard touched many lives and will be remembered with great fondness. Helen O’Brien

Indonesian Program 2015 Selamat Datang! Welcome to the Indonesian program!

Ibu Sue Elliott and Ibu Jenni Mulraney welcome all returning and new students and their families to learning about Indonesian language and culture as part of their learning program in 2015. There are many benefits for learning other languages and many of our students already speak another home language. Learning a language as well as English in primary school helps students understand English in new ways and introduces them to learning other languages in future. We value the many language backgrounds we can share in our school. Indonesian or Bahasa Indonesia is the national language of our closest Asian neighbour and is similar to Bahasa Malaysia that is spoken in Malaysia and Singapore. Like English, Indonesian has a Latin script/alphabet and is phonetic in sound and spelling. It does not require learning a character script or the tonal variations of some Asian languages. This helps students make comparisons with the English language. Learning Bahasa Indonesia supports learning about Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia, giving students skills to communicate and engage with the peoples of Asia. Students are given the opportunity to celebrate and develop understanding of Asian cultures, beliefs and environments so they can make connections with their own experience. Ibu Elliott teaches Indonesian Tuesday to Thursday and Ibu Mulraney on Wednesdays. If you have any questions or concerns about the program or your child’s progress, please leave a message and contact number/email with your class teacher or the front office. We look forward to sharing in your child’s learning during 2015. Terima kasih (Thank you)
