Annual Meeting 2011

The Annual Meeting was held on January 30, 2011 at 9:45 AM during the morning service reconvening again during the night service at c. 7:30 PM.

Susan Denman, Bishop’s Warden opened the meeting by acknowledging the guests in attendance and offering them coffee in the hall while our meeting was in progress if they so choose.

Susan acknowledged the many diverse ministries and those who work diligently for our church.

Brief information about our search for a new vicar was given with the following statement regarding our one interviewed candidate: “The Bishop’s Committee decided, through a discernment process guided by Canon Liz Beasley, that the way was not clear to call Mother Donna. In a phone conversation with the Arnolds on Saturday Hap Hiester and Susan Denman informed her that we would like to keep in contact with her through her upcoming surgery on March 8th and the healing to follow. She indicated her desire to be a part of St. Augustine’s future and agreed to continue the conversation.”

After tending her resignation as Bishop’s Warden, Susan Denman introduced David Hiester as the new Bishop’s Warden, pending the Bishop’s appointment.

The Junior Warden added his thanks to all who faithfully attend the “work day” as announced periodically.

Treasurer Donna Oba presented the budget as approved by the Bishop’s Committee at the December meeting.

Other ministries recognized: Thrift Store, committee on Liturgy and Music, Outreach Committee, Fellowship Committee, Scholarship Committee. (Fellowship Committee announced a meeting next Sunday.)

Note: The various warden, treasurer and committee reports are attached.

Annual Report

Bishop’s Warden Report January 29, 2012

January – October 2012 Hap Hiester was Bishop’s Warden from January to October 2012. During this period of time, the search for a priest in charge continued. Donna Arnold from the Episcopal Conference of Albany visited church with her husband. Ultimately, it was decided that after consultation with Bishop Fitzpatrick, that Ms. Arnold would not be given an offer for consideration. The Bishop’s Warden authorized an elevation survey of the northern portion of the cemetery along with an advertisement for a priest in charge. The small building left by Tom Buechele and his wife was removed by church members and the western portion of the property re-surveyed. The re-surveying revealed that the vicarage, rock wall, driveway and car port were not on church property; a resolution of the property line and issues regarding conformance with the actual property line were resolved with our neighbor. On the eastern portion of the church property, a drive-way, electrical wires and water lines were found to be on church property for which no documentation regarding an easement was recorded. The eastern portion of the rock retaining wall was found to be deteriorating along with the dirt slope due to County of Hawaii grubbing of the slope which was apparently solicited by a church member. Resolution of a solution for the western property line is pending. October – December 2012 Activities included the following: child care during the 9:00 am church service, acceptance of Heather Mueller as priest in charge for a 2 year period, negotiation of contract with Heather Mueller and the Diocese of Hawaii, resolution of ownership of household goods left by Tom Buechele in the vicarage, two work days, creation of a Sunshine Committee to provide outreach to church members off-campus, creation of accounts with florists in Hawaii and Oahu to provide flowers/cards to members in hospitals, creation of an off-campus Eucharistic Minister program, assistance to families in need via the Thrift Store, ordering of 20 new Book of Common Prayer to replace damaged books, advertising, financial support and implementation of a Holiday Community Meal in December, reduction of the number of pages in the Schedule of Worship at an estimated savings of at least $5000 per year, cancellation of copier lease and re-negotiation of new lease and copier at reduced costs, financing and bid acceptance to implement handicapped access to the chapel, re-wiring and repair of ceiling fans in chapel, bid and BC acceptance to expand cemetery plot, installation of filtered water system in Walker Hall to replace bottled water service, change in locks to the church office as well as an accounting of campus keys, funding of the youth scholarship account for 2012, identification and acceptance of a Vacation Bible Camp to be offered during the summer of 2012, implementation of a series of Bible Study programs offered by Heather Mueller and subsequent supply priests through 2012, change in the phone answering service in church office and a continuation of morning and evening service prior to the arrival of Heather Mueller in January. Bishop Fitzpatrick visited St. Augustine in December and was impressed with the active outreach program and the condition of the grounds and buildings. Bishop Fitzpatrick recommended that an

additional service (3 in total) be added; Bishop Fitzpatrick supported the placement of Heather Mueller as priest in charge at St. Augustine.

2011 Bag Ladies Report

Hard working, energetic, enthusiastic, good problem solvers and dedicated to the success of the St. Augustine's Thrift Store best describes the Bag Ladies. Each and every Thursday morning at 9:00 AM they show up to work. Their numbers vary from week to week but the job always gets done. From sorting to straightening to stocking to re-distributing , always with their motto in mind to "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" they help to manage the continuous stream of donations which come weekly to the store. We consider ourselves "Hatsue's Helpers" and hope that we make her job and that of the regular Thrift Store volunteers easier. Perhaps a goal for this year would be to come up with a new name. We also have the continued help of several men and would always welcome more. Mahalo nui loa to this committed group of volunteers which include members of St. Augustine’s and many from our community at large. They are:

Cindy Tinker Elma Domingo Susie Cook Linda Gonsalves Marian Tompkins Julie Adkins Carol Ann Olsen Jan Morgan Kathy Alexander Howard Olsen Maurine Combs John Sakai Amy Wong Hank Guerrero

2011 Outreach Committee Report In 2011 we at St. Augustine’s were faced with the challenge to serve God and our fellow brothers and sisters in the world despite the absence of a vicar to guide us in our mission. We are pleased to report that we were indeed able to overcome this challenge and in fact have expanded our outreach to such a degree that it is no longer a single committee that directs these efforts within our church but rather it is the combined effort of each church member serving in their own special way. Some highlights of what this looked like in 2011 include:

§ The Food Basket: In addition to our regular donations, which provide assistance to over 200 families in N. Kohala, this year under the direction of John and Cindy Sakai we participated in the Christmas Food Vouchers Program through which we helped over 50 families enjoy all the blessings of this special time of year.

§ Community Meal: 2011 was in many ways a banner year for our community meal. More church members than ever before are helping to serve more people than ever before. The word is out about the delicious food and friendly folks that gather at James Walker Hall on the Fourth Saturday of each month, and people are coming! At our special Holiday meal we had a full house and served a feast fit for kings, thanks in large part to a generous monetary contribution from individuals within the community. Thanks to all!

§ Lokahi Angel Tree: Through this program—under the able direction of Kathy Matsuda—we were able to provide gifts and smiles to 25 children and 4 families during the Christmas season.

§ Foreign Aid—In addition to special collections following natural disasters. St. Augustine members are committed to helping our brothers and sisters all around the world through the development of aid programs such as the Samaritan’s Purse with provided 7 shoeboxes to children in foreign lands, Rebecca Bartholomey’s orphanage in the Philippines which is amply supplied by the St. Augustine’s Thrift store, and also Kohala’s Hope for Haiti, whom St. Augustine’s has supported in their quest to offer long-term support and an ohana relationship with the town of Marigot, Haiti. To date the group has raised over $7000 through their efforts and those of the church.

§ James Walker Hall Use: In addition to being vital for our own needs, the hall continues to play an integral role in the community as a host for many of the groups that uphold and inspire the unique community that is Kohala. It truly is a gathering place for many of the most instrumental groups within our community, including the Boy/Cub Scouts of America, the RMD Taiko Drummers, Al-Anon, Ohana Conferencing, the Community Development Plan Committees and Sub-Committees, the North Kohala interdenominational ministers, the Adult Community Chorus and soon to be a Youth Community Chorus will call James Walker Hall home. Quite an impressive list!

This report is by no means comprehensive and we want to thank each of you for the many ways you serve God through this church and in your daily life. And of course…we can do more and we most certainly will with Mother Heather now at the helm. She has already begun to reach out in service to the community through the open bible study program and we look forward to the many ways she will challenge us to open our own hearts in service. As the inspiration strikes you please feel free to share your ideas and suggestions, together we can make a difference......Aloha and God Bless, L. Bowman and W. Quayle

St. Augustine Scholarship Report Annual Meeting January 29, 2012

St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Kapaau awarded nineteen students attending college or vocational schools scholarships for the third consecutive year. The scholarships are one outreach program of St. Augustine designed to assists students with their tuition and cost of living expenses while attending college. The number of 2011 awards was double those given in 2010 and represents a spiritual and financial support of their educational pursuits. The total amount of the scholarships in 2011 was $12,000 and represents one of the largest educational funds in North Kohala. To quality, each applicant was required to submit an application detailing their reasons for applying, copies of transcripts or acceptance letters and confirmation that they and their families are active members of the church. The St. Augustine Scholarship Committee reviewed all of the applicants and allocated funds based on need, participation of the student at St. Augustine and whether the student was attending a university in Hawaii or on the mainland. The scholarship fund is renewed each year with the goal to distribute all of the monies in the fund each year. The money for the fund is given anonymously by church members each year and as a result the amount available for individual scholarship varies. While the church is not wealthy by any means, the congregation is generous and is vested in the success of its students, said Robert Morrison, Chair of the Scholarship Committee. During two Sunday services in July, qualifying students attended the morning service and receive their awards. During the ceremony, students shared their educational goals and progress. Awards were presented by members of the St. Augustine Scholarship Committee comprised of Genny Bader, Madeleine Hiester, Robert Morrison and Rosemary Rasmussen. As in previous years, the congregation is allowed to follow the progress of the students through their presentations and share in the student’s educational experience. After the award ceremony, a buffet provided by church members to the students and their families. Students receiving awards this year included Mai Fujii (Kapiolani Community College), Melanie Matsuda (UH Manoa), Ikaika Andrews Colorado State University), Carisa Kanehailua Oregon State University), Miho Fujii (UH- Manoa), Kiana Kometani (Northern Arizona University), Jacqueline Wong (Portland Community College), Todd Colson (University of LaVerne), Selena Osorio (Humbolt State), Josephine Osorio (Hawaii Community College – Hilo), Jerome Arellano (Maui Community College), Marygold Salvador (UH Hilo), Cecily Fujii (Kapiolani Community College), Daniel Fujii (UH Hilo), Beau Lopez (UH Manoa), Chelsea Kanehailua (UH-West Hawaii), Jordan Ching (Southwestern Oregon Community College), Weston Purdy (Northern Arizona University) and James Colson (UH-Hilo). Eight of the 2011 recipients were awarded scholarships in 2010. For Kiana Kometani who is a senior at Northern Arizona University, the 2011 scholarship award is her fourth and has allowed church members to follow and participate in her educational success. Kiana and her family, John and Vicky Kometani, are active members of the church. Even though attending school in Arizona, Kiana plays the church piano and assists with child care during her summers in Kohala.

2012 Annual Meeting

St. Augustine Episcopal Church

Kapaau, Hawaii 96755

A report of the designated 2011 Education Committee to the members of St. Augustine’s:

Another year has come and gone and the weekly Bible Study group is alive and well. Due to an increase in attendance, the site was moved from the homes of the gracious participants to Walker Hall on church premises. Due in large part to this move, we have grown to a maximum weekly attendance of up to seventeen people.

The move has given us more visibility in the community and we have added several Christians from other denominations. We are working towards having a better way to advertise our existence in the wider community.

Beginning late in 2010 the group began studying Romans; Becoming New in Christ. That series of studies took 19 weeks. That was followed by John; The Way to True Life. The 26 studies carried us through 2011. On January 3, 2012 we began a different type of study, taking on a theme rather than a particular book of the Bible: Hope; Your Heart’s Deepest Longings which is broken into 8 studies. The next study (about 12 weeks) should begin sometime after the end of February: David; Developing a Heart for God. (Ash Wednesday is February 22, and although we haven’t discussed a Lenten series, we may postpone the study of David until after Easter Sunday which is April 8th this year.)

We encourage any and all of you desiring to know more of Christianity and of Jesus, its author, to stop in and join us. It is a totally non-threatening experience. We read, work in our work books and discuss all in a low-key environment…then we eat. We have recently changed the starting time to 10:00 AM to accommodate someone’s schedule.

We are forever grateful to the close-knit group who kept this Bible Study group going for so many years in their homes. Mahalo nui kakou!

Respectfully In Christ

St. Augustine Episcopal Church Bazaar September 10, 2011

Chairpersons CJ Kenyon-Suzuki & Kathy Matsuda

Our goal for the bazaar was to have an increase from 2010 bazaar. We had an increase of $1936.33. We made $11, 344.61 with expense of $38.62 bringing it to $11,305.99 net. For each section we had an increase except for thrift shop and plants. Thrift shop did open prior on Wednesday and Thursday and they had an increase in sales on those days. Plants were a decrease because we had less farmers donating plants, fruits, and vegetables. Over-all everyone worked together and it was a very successful bazaar.
