Social Justice Thought for the Week: (February 21 - International Mother Language Day)

At the time of invasion there were over 700 different Aboriginal languages and dialects spoken in Australia. Now there are less than 250 still in use. One of the major practices of colonists was to stop Aboriginal people speaking their own languages, which interrupted the passing of language from one generation to another. Today, many of Australia's Indigenous languages are no longer spoken as first languages. However, they live on through individual words and through varieties of Aboriginal English which incorporate the structures of Aboriginal languages. http://www.dreamtime.net.au/indigenous/culture.cfm

It is a mistake to dismiss our languages as part of history, and long gone. They're not. They are alive and vibrant. They are in a new phase of growth. They're part of us as the Indigenous people of the land. Our languages are the voice of the land, and we are the carriers of the languages. Jeanie Bell, Linguist, Boyer Lectures, 1993. In 2015 Pope Francis said that “every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral – and not simply an economic – act.” Join the Easter campaign against child slavery

Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans (ACRATH) is urging people to eat only slavery-free chocolate, especially this Easter. Did you know that much of the chocolate available in Australia is made using cocoa beans picked by children, many of whom have been enslaved, or forced to work in exploitative conditions? The International Labor Rights Forum (ILRF) estimates that there are 1.5 million children working in the cocoa sector in West Africa. To buy slavery-free Easter chocolate look for any of these certification labels on the wrappers: FAIRTRADE, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ.

Social Justice Meeting Report On Tuesday afternoon our parish Social Justice group held its first meeting for 2016. The focus was on planning for the next twelve months. On what justice issues, among so many calling for our attention, would we concentrate our energies? Apart from supporting in every way possible the work of the Diocesan Social Justice Commission and ongoing events such as Harmony Week, Refugee and Migrant Sunday, World Refugee Day and NAIDOC Week, as they arise, we decided broadly on two main target areas: 1) We will continue our struggle to support asylum seekers in our local area, with particular emphasis currently on the Let Them Stay campaign to prevent deportation to Nauru. 2) In the course of the meeting, we received input from some of our St Vinny members about the group’s ongoing struggle to provide welfare for international students in our local area. From the way students are recruited in their home countries, to false incentives and promises held out to them, to exploitation in employment and other areas of life in Australia, many international students are trapped in unjust and destructive situations. Although there are many layers of complexity in this issue our group determined to research and take action on it in 2016. Just a little reminder: St Anthony’s Social Justice group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 4.00pm in the Parish Office and everyone is most welcome to drop in to visit or to join us.

Dear Parents, The school has sent a survey home on Tuesday the 9th of February to seek your opinion on an effective Homework framework. We respectfully ask that you return your survey by no later than tomorrow Friday the 12th of February. For parents with more than one child, when completing your survey we ask that you give your opinion relating to your oldest child’s needs. We will then collate the data to assist the staff in determining a homework framework that is

as comprehensive as possible. You will note that homework is currently being sent home and this reflects the current homework practice in place. We ask you to continue to support this approach until a new framework can be created that considers the data gathered. Thank you in advance for supporting the school that supports your child. The St Anthony’s School has managed to secure an additional time for in-service for parents wishing to receive the necessary information to be considered a candidate for P&F Executive. Mr John Beaton has also offered 1.15 pm 17th of February as an alternative time. This second option will allow those unable to make the face-to-face in-service, set for the 16th February at 5.30pm. The same time frames will exist for both in-services on offer. We will utilise the Special Needs room and John will deliver his PowerPoint presentation over the phone on the 17th. We hope that this second option supports interested parents in receiving the necessary training. The Qld P&F Association applaud our approach and like us, are very pleased that so many parents are interested in making a positive contribution to St Anthony’s. Best wishes to everyone seeking to support the students of this school in this way. The Year 6’s attended their Leadership Camp at Emu Gully this week. We believe this is an invaluable day for the development of our senior students in their efforts to set leadership examples for the remaining student body. It’s a day of supported risk-taking, gaining an understanding about what leadership is and the ramifications of their actions when in leadership roles. The school would like to thank Miss Nosworthy and Miss Cavanagh for their attendance at this event and giving of their personal time to ensure student safety. The school would also like to acknowledge the support we received for Shrove Tuesday. Your ‘gold-coin’ contribution goes towards Caritas. A special mention to Claire Connors for assisting Miss Nosworthy in making enough pancakes for everyone. I think both of these ladies would be happy if they didn’t have to make another pancake this year. Thanks to both of you. Paul

APRE News:

Today marks the beginning of Lent. This is the Season where we reflect on our lives and work on things we wish to change. It’s a time to open our minds, get our lives centred, priorities straight and our hearts cleaned. I have just returned from Ash Wednesday liturgy where the staff and students received the ashes on their foreheads. During this Lenten Season, may we be open to God’s presence in our lives and bettering ourselves through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We need to think about ‘where we are at’ in our lives and what is stopping us from becoming the absolute best we can be. The students have also been encouraged to “give up” or “take up” something this Lenten season. Karra Nosworthy APRE

1st Sunday of Lent - WEEK 1: Malawi Doney (pronounced door-nee) is a quiet and humble woman, but thanks to an innovative program supported by Caritas Australia, she’s creating big changesin her life – and in her village.

Doney beams when she talks about how much her life has changed in the last five years. “My life has been transformed,” she smiles. “I am now more knowledgeable on a number of issues and I have a vision.”

Located in East Africa, Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Over half the population is living below the poverty line, with more than 80% of people living in rural communities, and relying on farming small plots of land to produce adequate food to l ive on.

In Doney’s remote village in the Blantyre region, her family have often gone months without enough food. Yet, when Caritas Australia and the local Caritas, called CADECOM (the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi), began a program in Doney’s village, they didn’t simply see poverty, isolation and food shortage, they saw potential.

CADECOM worked with Doney’s community to identify their strengths, so they can build on them to meet their needs. “It is important to use the local resources that we have so that our lives can improve. We have water here, and land, which can move us out of poverty,” explains Doney.

Empowering the community to make the most of their land, CADECOM trained families in new farming techniques, so they can produce more plentiful and reliable crops. “The problem of malnutrition in my household is old song now,” smiles Doney.

As the community looked at their strengths, Doney’s skills and passion for education were quickly recognised. “I was chosen by the community and after that CADECOM took me for training in Adult Literacy as a Facilitator,” she says.

Despite only finishing primary school, Doney’s training gave her the skills to teach literacy and numeracy to adults in the village. “In the past people didn’t know how to read and write. They didn’t even know the direction of the bus as they didn’t know how to read the sign posts,” explains Doney. “Now many are able to read and write as well as know how to count money.”

Knowing how to count, tally and work with money became more important when a Village Savings and Loan group was introduced as part of the program. This enables people to borrow money to invest in starting their own small businesses. “My husband Nedson is a tailor,” Doney says. “When we get funds from Village Savings and Loans we buy materials for him to sew. We sell the products and through this we get money to pay our children’s school fees.”

Doney is determined that her five children complete secondary school. Even though just 7% of 15-24 year olds in Malawi complete secondary education, she has strong hopes. “I encourage my children to attain education so that they can be independent in the future,” she says. “This would make me proud!”

As Doney’s village harness their new skills, CADECOM is working in solidarity with them to improve health and sanitation. The program helped families build hand-washing facilities at their homes, and provided education on hygiene. CADECOM also worked with the community to install a borehole so that people have easy access to fresh, clean drinking water and do not have to use unsafe river water for drinking, cooking and washing. “Here, waterborne diseases were common,” says Doney. “But now there is a reduction.” These days

there are far fewer cases of diseases like diarrhoea, which once stopped children from going to school.

Doney is proud of the new skills and fresh hope that her community has gained. Each family – and the village as a whole– has mapped out a vision for the future. It includes a plan to learn new livelihood techniques, like beekeeping and baking, and ways to increase their access to clean water and healthcare. “The village is developing,” she says. “I would like to thank the people of Australia. The support you provide to us is going to the right people, and is helping us.”

Please donate to Project Compassion 2016 and help people in remote areas of Malawi harness their strengths

and pave the way towards a thriving future. Envelopes & boxes in foyer.
