MISSION STATEMENT
The Mission of St. Anthony Parish is to welcome, nurture and go forth to serve, in the
name of Jesus.
VISION STATEMENT
St. Anthony Parish will meet individuals of diverse backgrounds where they are in their
journey, welcome them into our parish community, and through communal worship,
formation, and opportunities to serve, invite them to grow in their relationship with Christ, with one
another, and with our parish community. Together, we will strive to meet the challenges and
wounds of life and help to nurture the spiritual development and faith of all who come. We will
continue to build on the foundation of our faith and our parish community for future generations and become a
beacon of light, hope and faith to all.

CONTRIBUTIONS - 2020 DDF— 2020 In today’s first reading, the Israelites are urged to love their neighbors as themselves. In the Gospel, Jesus spells out how we are to do that — to give generously to those who ask of us and not to turn our backs on those who seek to borrow.

Prayers for Our Military Troops
Perhaps you, too, love a service member. Or maybe, because you’ve served in the past or know someone
who has, you understand the sacrifices these men and women make to guard our safety and preserve our freedom. We invite you to join us as we pray for
the men and women who serve.
Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy.
Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. May the
power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever
praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Greetings everyone! Over the last year Fr. Gerry, the clergy and the staff have been working on new aspects in campus safety for you, the community. In light of some incidents that have taken place involving religious communities both far and within our diocese you have seen new procedures put in place and a security guard on premises when we have events or mass. This is to ensure safety at St. Anthony’s. Of course, this does not guarantee that incidents won’t happen, but they will put into place safety practices that will make a difference. Although we are a quiet community, we have had a few incidents take place in the last few months. The most recent involved the Upland, Montclair and Ontario police departments as a stolen vehicle was chased up to 21st and San Antonio, right in front of our parish. This occurred on Saturday, February 8th during the 5p mass. The car slammed into a tree and parked vehicle and the suspect ran onto St. Anthony’s campus. Fortunately, the on-duty security guard along with the new procedures of having all doors locked once mass begins, other than the Holy doors, managed to keep the suspect from entering the church. We are thankful for the quick response from Upland PD, our security guard and the ushers at 5p for working together to ensure safety at St. Anthony’s. We understand that although the new security procedures are not always convenient, they are necessary, and we appreciate the understanding and support from all of you. Thank you. With that being said, we need more ushers at all the masses. If you are interested, please know this does not mean you will be relied on each week if that is not your intent. Our hope is to get several ushers for each mass and be able to rotate teams. If you are interested, please contact the office. We would also like any of our parishioners that are active or retired law enforcement who would be open to working with the office, ushers and security guard in case of an emergency to also contact the office. More information will be given when you call. Many blessings, Analisa Castro Business Manager Office # 909-985-2803

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
Going the Extra Mile So often in life, people are concerned about the minimum requirements. What is the minimum I must do to get a certain grade? What is the minimum I need to do to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation? What exactly do I have to do to make my boss happy? This concern does not stop with everyday life but continues into our relationship with God. What exactly is required of me for salvation? How much time, talent, and treasure are enough? Jesus does not call us to this way of life, but instead to a life of unbounding generosity and surrender. Jesus said, “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.” The minimum requirement is one mile; however, we are not to be disciples of minimum requirements and checking off boxes. We are to go the extra mile because that is how we bear witness to the transforming power of Jesus Christ. That is how we change lives and share the grace and love we have received in abundance. Nothing ever changes by doing the minimum. There is no real glory given to God by responding to His call with the minimum. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
— Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK - INVITE PARISHIONERS TO REFLECT AND RESPOND TO SCRIPTURE
First Reading God’s command to the ancient Israelites to be holy is inextricably linked to love of neighbor. What obstacles make this call to holiness so difficult to achieve? Second Reading Paul sees believers as “the temple of God” (holy) and warns believers, “Let no one deceive himself.” What are the voices in our society that try to deceive us of our identity? Gospel Reading In speaking about non-retaliation and love of enemies, Jesus challenges his disciples to “be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Why do you think Jesus would issue such a seemingly impossible command?

VIVIR LA LITURGIA - INSPIRACIÓN DE LA SEMANA (Live the Liturgy)
¿Qué significa ser santo? Dios tiene ideas definidas sobre la respuesta. No odiar a tu hermano o her-

“When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the
other one as well… Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go for two miles.” -Ma hew 5:39, 41
In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenged the people to go beyond loving those who are kind to them, to loving their enemies as well. That is a hard teaching! Most
mes, we want to get back at people who hurt us, but this is not the way God wants us to respond. God sent Jesus to us as an example. Do you remember what Jesus said when he was being cru-cified? “Father, forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing.” Only with the help of the Holy Spirit can we follow Jesus’ example in returning love for violence. Dear Lord, send your Holy Spirit to us so we can love even those who are hardest to love. Has someone done something for me that was ex-tra loving– more than I deserved or expected?

Why do Catholics eat pancakes on Fat Tuesday?
Partners in FAITH Helping our children grow in their Catholic faith.
February 2020 In the early Church it was customary to give up rich foods as well as meat during the penitential season of Lent. This included milk, eggs, butter, cheese, and fat. On the Tuesday before Lent began, families would
empty the pantry of the forbidden foods by enjoying a dinner of pancakes (or in some places, fried doughnuts!). In some countries, it is even called “Pancake Tuesday.” It was meant to be one final celebration of feasting before the Lenten fast.

Symbols of the Season Christian cultures all over the world share symbols of the Lenten season: Ashes. In the early Church, sinners were marked with ashes and isolated from the community on Ash Wednesday. During Lent, they lived apart for serious wrongs such as adultery, theft, murder, heresy. On Holy Thursday, they were absolved and welcomed back. Today, a cross is traced on our foreheads from ashes of last year’s palms signaling the start of Lent. Eggs. Eggs used to be among the foods that couldn’t be eaten during Lent. A staple in many diets, the lack increased their importance. Over time, the egg became a symbol of the tomb. Jesus was laid in a tomb and rose on Easter to bring us new life. New life also comes from an egg. At Easter, we die eggs and gift them in baskets. Palms. In pre-Christian days, palms were thought to ward off evil. Palms were laid at Jesus’ feet as he rode into Jerusalem. Blessed palms are distributed on Palm Sunday in remembrance.
Parent Talk: Last year, I felt our family observance of Lent had gotten stale. We have given up everything from chocolate to TV to videogames. We needed a new approach to the season. What if we “competed” to do good deeds? I bought a giant roll of tickets and set up an empty jar for each of us. Every time someone performed a good deed, a ticket would go in his or her jar – two if the deed was secret.
To keep up enthusiasm and interest, we totaled the tickets halfway through Lent. The person who earned the most tickets decided where we went for brunch on Laetare Sunday. We made a nal count on Easter and celebrated with brunch after Mass. It was a great success! This was the most observant Lent we ever had. More importantly, the kids learned to look for opportunities to practice kindness, compassion, generosity, and love
